The Pearl Harbor attack came as a surprise. On that fateful day in 1941, at 7:48 AM, the Imperial Japanese Navy bombed the Hawaiian harbor, as well as some air stations, killing 2,403 US personnel, including 68 civilians, wounding about 1,200 others, and destroying or damaging killing 2,403 US personnel, including 68 civilians, wounding about 1,200 others, and destroying or damaging nearly 20 US Navy ships and more than 300 aircraft. One day later, the US declared war on Japan, marking the former’s official entry into World when soldiers were unprepared and vulnerable: “I looked out and I see boards 1,000 feet in the air burst into flames.”
