AMAC EXCLUSIVE

Painted outdoor `Official Ballot Drop Box` at a suggestive cant with luscious flowers in the background.

It’s springtime, and that means it’s time for a fresh round of deceptive and destructive ballot initiatives. More often than not, these proposals are at odds with the principles of conservative governance, even if they don’t always sound that way.

The exact ballot initiative process varies from state to state, but the idea is simple: if you collect enough signatures, you can bypass the state legislature to get a proposed change to state law or even the state constitution on the ballot. If enough people vote for the change, it goes into effect whether the state legislators like it or not.

On the surface, ballot initiatives seem like a great idea. After all, what could be more democratic than circulating petitions, collecting signatures, and making laws without the help of representatives?

However, it is the purely democratic nature of ballot initiatives that in many cases make them so destructive. America’s Founding Fathers handed down a representative constitutional republic for a reason. They wanted to ensure that the “passions of the people” were moderated by elected governing bodies.

Consider Federalist No. 10, in which James Madison wrote, “democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.”

Consider also John Marshall in his work The Life of George Washington, who wrote, “between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

I could go on with quotes from Hamilton, Adams, and more, but the simple point is that simple rule by the majority on all matters is not what our Founders had in mind. They required each state to have a “representative form of government” because they believed that the people’s representatives are their best safeguards against chaos.

Some cynics argue that ballot initiatives are bad because people are too ignorant to rule themselves. But the more accurate analysis of the dangers of pure democracy is not that people are dumb, but rather that the left is so deceptive.

The average mom of three coming out of the grocery store doesn’t have time to thoroughly research a particular ballot initiative before making the choice whether to sign the petition or not. Big money interests capitalize on that.

Ballot initiatives don’t get started when a ragtag group of citizens spend their evenings after work collecting signatures in the park. Ballot initiatives start with the pollsters. Every word is carefully tested to gauge the best possible voter reaction. The more conservative the state, the more important it is for the language to sound conservative.

Once the pollsters have crafted the language that will get them the results they are looking for, they bring in the professional signature collectors.

This is the cheapest part of the whole ploy. In Missouri, getting a ballot initiative on the ballot will require at least 107,000 signatures this year, depending on the type of initiative. That may sound intimidating, but not when you have millions of dollars in your campaign war chest.

Let’s say a George Soros wanted to take down a solid red state’s restrictions on marijuana use via ballot initiative. He’d want to collect extra signatures since some would be declared invalid, so let’s round up the amount collected to 150,000. Assuming he hired really horrible signature gatherers who only got ten signatures per hour and paid them $40 per hour to do it, he will have bought a ballot initiative for $600,000. That’s chump change to a billionaire.

From there, it is a simple matter of drowning voters in advertising. We’ve all seen it happen. It is possible to beat the odds when it comes to campaign spending, but only to a point.

Conservatives are usually outgunned on funding, but that is to be expected. Sadly, there is more money in the abortion industry than there is in embracing life. There is more money in the marijuana industry than there is in safe streets.

You can see this slow-motion train wreck happening right now in Missouri, the very first state in the nation to completely ban abortion. A front group has been set up to push a ballot initiative that will legalize abortion all the way up until so-called “viability,” which is among the most liberal benchmarks possible.

However, to appeal to the ironclad conservative majorities of the state, the front group pushing the ballot initiative calls themselves “Missourians for Constitutional Freedom.”

The initiative itself is called the “Missouri Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment.” Note how the word “Reproductive” is carefully sandwiched between the more conservative-sounding “Right” and “Freedom.”

The language is expansive, allowing signature collectors to boldly proclaim their pro-abortion intentions in leftist enclaves, while their collectors in conservative territory will trick unsuspecting conservatives into signing by asking sneaky questions like “Would you sign a petition to give Missourians the right to make their own decisions about prenatal care?” or “Do you want to be able to make your own decisions about birth control?”

The reason leftists are so heavily relying on ballot initiatives is clear. Republicans dominate in state legislatures. Twenty-two states even have a “Republican trifecta,” which is where both statehouses are controlled by Republicans and the governor is also a Republican. In these states, ballot initiatives are often the only quick and effective way to spread the leftist agenda.

The natural next question might be, well why don’t conservatives utilize ballot initiatives in the same way in liberal states?

It’s a good point. Conservatives could, for instance, use the method to ban sanctuary cities, require courts to put violent criminal offenders in jail, or prohibit extreme late-term abortions.

Once again, however, conservatives would likely run into well-funded and well-organized efforts to oppose them. Currently, the left simply has more high-dollar donors than the right who are willing to back state-level initiatives.

Regardless, however, conservatives need to rethink how we treat ballot initiatives. Each and every one should be met with skepticism. All should be thoroughly researched before signing.

If they are to exist, they should be limited to simple, one- or two-sentence changes that can be easily understood. The less clear a ballot initiative is, the more likely it’s a recipe for disaster.

Good article of how the enemy is by passing the Republic form of government and using deception to pass bad legislation that is undermining the state’s and Federal powers to properly govern their respective communities. The people need to wake up and not blindly fall for this deception.

I agree in concept. However, when you have states like California, Oregon, and Washington where Democrats hold iron clad rule and have for decades, the initiative process has proven to be the only way to cut off some of their worst legislation.
For example, Democrats forced through, literally in the dead of night, a law that took away authority for the police to pursue criminals, all in the name of “equity”. As a result crime jumped substantially, highway speeds increased by 10 mph average, and criminals literally thumbed their noses at police.
Among the initiatives this session was one to restore that authority. It created enough heat that the legislature approved it. Of course Democrats know that if they approve it, they can change it next session, while if it goes to a vote and passes, they are barred from touching it for several years.
Democrats have repeatedly shown they’ll stop at nothing to force bad policy upon the public. Note that Joe Biden just literally said he was glad to ignore SCOTUS and the law to “forgive” student loan debt. Of course it’s not forgiven, the rest of us, who didn’t sign a contract, get to pay for it. And he thumbed his nose at his oath of office.

The communists and democrats are already “in charge.” Single family building is all but eliminated. They are building communes. 100 plus living quarters per build. The started with duplexes and fourplexes. They want neighbors spying on neighbors.
They want all “plastic money” so they know where people spend their money. They can control every ones saving and checking accounts. They can see every investment people have and control the buying and selling their investments.
Is it too late to get out freedoms back. Obama is calling the shots. Biden is just a figurehead. He does not realize the the hell he has created. His mind is too far gone, if he ever knew, what is happening. It sed to be of the people, by the people, for the people. Now it is of the government by the government, for the government.

I just signed one last weekend for voter ID checks because the Nevada legislature never brings it up. Sisolak was threatened with a recall during COVID and they threw out signatures if the entry was not filled out PERFECTLY i.e.: name dipped below the line, legibility, etc. But Democrats still allow dead people to vote… so long as they vote Democrat!

This is an excellent article that reinforces the need for self-control and responsible research before supporting any ballot initiative that could possibly be misleading.

Why is health care legislated from the White House or the federal government. Why is abortion a political question. In this day and age with birth control available to both men and women. The morning after pill are there still unwanted pregnancies. Why legislate abortion from DC. The people in each state should decide. Uncle Sam should stay out of the people’s bedroom. Any other petition they can come up with should not be signed by people unless it is a good cause. Abortion is not a good cause. Especially if it is stated to full term. Although they use the word viability. Which many voters don’t know what it means. Just hearing the word abortion makes them sign it. Take personal responsibility for your actions. In anything you do there are consequences, and it is your responsibility to prevent them. If signing a petition you do not read it first thoroughly or you don’t ask question you are a sheep. And the dems count on that.

The left will always use deception to get the power they want. If they came out and told the people what their actual game plan is, they would always be voted down or at least voted down by those who don’t want to be controled!

The fact the leftist ballot initiatives are so heavily funded and more than conservative attempts is a prime indictment against the motives of most wealthy people. It shouts MORE CONTROL, TOTAL CONTROL…..and there is little if any ethical or moral motivation or purpose under-pinning their actions.
The last statement is definitely the BEST point – “The less clear a ballot initiative is, the more likely it’s a recipe for disaster.”

I have always found initiatives add to ballots to be worded to be confusing. They are written so a yes actually means no and a know actually means yes.

Perfect example is Massachusetts. They had a ballot initiative that capitalized on people’s envy when they asked “Should we tax extra 4% to people who make more than a million dollars”?
Naturally, people said yes, since it didn’t apply to them and they foolishly thought tax revenues would increase. But let’s look at the numbers. Let’s say someone makes $1.5 million. Under the old tax they would pay $75k in income taxes ($1.5million x 5%). Under the new tax which is an extra 4% over a million they would now pay $95k. An additional $20k. So are tax revenues increasing? No, they’re actually decreasing. Because put yourself in that millionaires mindset. It was bad enough paying $75k to the State, but now pushing it up to $95k, that now comes out to $7,900 per MONTH. If it were me, I would be asking myself “Should I move to Florida or another $0 income tax state”? Because if I had an extra $7,900 per month that would pay for a pretty nice house that would be my primary house and I could keep my house in Massachusetts all for the same amount I would have paid in taxes. ADIOS MASSACHUSETTS. And that’s what’s been happening!

Conservatives need to get tougher and treat the leftist democrats with the same tactics that they employ.I don’t know if conservatives can have the same vile and sick mentality that the leftists have, but we need to fight fire with fire.We need to respond in kind.

Conservatives have taken the high road for the most part, while liberals lie, cheat, and sugarcoat their agenda with bills like “The inflation reduction bill.” In today’s world, conservatives need to get nasty, fight fire with fire, and serve the liberals a heaping helping of their own medicine.

For evil to win it needs Deception on the one hand and Apathy on the other. The Republican party is just not as cohesive and organized as the Progressive Socio fascist Democrats and is far too complacent to stand up to them. They just passed ANOTHER T$ spending bill with VERY little concessions. The founding fathers relied on the “free Press” and gave them certain protections to be able to expose corruption. Instead we have a complicit Corporate Media that shields and protects evil. I’m afraid we are fighting a losing battle

In Arizona I was approached in the Safeway parking lot last week to sign on to Abortion rights. I told the girl with the clipboard, a firm no. She was OK with it and went on through the parking lot cornering others,Then I did see one young woman actually sign the thing. I don’t believe she knew what she was agreeing to, but just wanted to get rid of the signature gatherer. Some people just cannot say NO.

In New Mexico, the so called democrats redraw voting districts to steal the elections l. The governor controls the state Supreme Court and browbeats the legislature so all the Democrats vote her way. They have passed bills to help them steal elections and forbid school staff to tell parents when their children are seeking gender changes. The effort by Better Together New Mexico to allow citizens to vote on these bills is not financed by anyone. Those of us who are gathering petitions are merely volunteers. These bills aren’t political. They are an effort for morality and our Secretary of State says she won’t recognize them.

The intent of the founding fathers to understand and moderate the needs of the people is admirable, ut very out dated. When politicians truly respected the will of the people it worked. But now career politicians have no clue or desire to satisfy or consider constituents desires or will.

The Founding Fathers did not see the evil possibilities attended by greed. Power and wealth are a greed that can overpower all good intentions. Safe to say we have had the longest running Republic but time is near for a fight for the soul of our nation. Either we have a country for We the People, or we lose to the global elites. Our FED has far exceeded the Constitution and has become a beast carrying the burden of special interests. Too big and failing!

Good information. Unfortunately there are endless opportunities and emails coming our way with this initiative and that initiative to sign and be a champion of. Right now with all the evil and wickedness going on I can see why we’d fall for it, because we want better for our country. We want change for the better. I certainly will be more careful about this. It’s sad to think that by signing an initiative we can do more harm than good. Definitely need to educate ourselves.

Excellent article by Mr. Martin! Not surprisingly, this important information is sorely lacking in the mainstream media and education. As one who has done a variety of research on ballot measures, I can say that the majority of information available on the subject leans heavily to the left. Thank you for publishing this timely explanation!

I agree with Mr Martin’s statement that each should be met with skepticism and that all people need to thoroughly research the initiative before signing anything. Unfortunately, the initiators of initiatives, know most people won’t and that they fall for the fanciful names they put on these initiatives making them appear to be for one thing when in fact it is deceptively for another. They do the same thing in Congress. Remember Pelosi’s remark about the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)??? Approve it, and you can read it later !!!

Know what you are voting for!!! Take the time to look it up and read it!!!
