Dear Representatives Mathews and Fischer,

On behalf of AMAC Action, the advocacy affiliate of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), with over 2 million members nationwide, including over 82,200 members in the state of Ohio, we write to offer our support for House Bill 952, the Ohio Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Our members in Ohio and across the country believe that religious freedom is a fundamental constitutional right and that government should never interfere with religious exercise. Individuals should be able to freely practice their sincerely held religious beliefs and should have standing for legal action when needed to assert their religious liberty.

Your legislation provides an important legal remedy for citizens whose religious exercise has been substantially burdened. When constitutional rights are at stake, your bill guarantees that individuals have a clear path to seek relief through the courts and ensure that government actions receive appropriate judicial review. The bill also serves as an important safeguard against government overreach. Government should face a high threshold before litigating on religious practices, and this legislation helps ensure that any regulations affecting people of faith are carefully scrutinized and narrowly tailored.

This legislation follows the well-established framework of the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which was enacted with broad bipartisan support in 1993. While federal law provides protections against actions by the federal government, HB 952 would extend similar safeguards to actions taken by state and local governments in Ohio. Many states have already adopted their own Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, recognizing the importance of preserving religious freedom at the state level. By passing HB 952, Ohio would join those states in providing meaningful protections for the free exercise of religion.

AMAC Action is proud to support your legislation which helps preserve a cornerstone of our constitutional system and protects the rights of current and future generations. We look forward with you to working with you to protect our seniors of faith in Ohio.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Bengtson
Vice President
