On May 21, 1881, Clara Barton founded the American Red Cross, creating what would become one of the most important humanitarian organizations in United States history. Known as the “Angel of the Battlefield” for her fearless service during the Civil War, Barton devoted her life to helping those suffering from war, disaster, illness, and tragedy. Her vision for the American Red Cross transformed disaster relief and emergency response in the United States and established a legacy of compassion that continues more than a century later.

Born Clarissa Harlowe Barton on December 25, 1821, in Oxford, Massachusetts, she demonstrated a desire to help others from an early age. Before becoming a nurse and humanitarian, Barton worked as a teacher and later became one of the first women employed by the federal government at the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C. When the Civil War erupted in 1861, she left her office job behind and began gathering supplies and delivering aid directly to wounded soldiers on the battlefield.

Unlike many volunteers of the time, Barton often traveled directly into dangerous combat zones to care for injured troops. She distributed food, bandages, medicine, and clothing while nursing wounded soldiers under fire. Her courage and dedication earned her widespread admiration from soldiers and military leaders alike. Barton later helped locate missing soldiers and notify grieving families after the war ended, continuing her commitment to humanitarian service.

During a trip to Europe in the late 1860s, Barton learned about the International Red Cross, an organization established in Switzerland to provide neutral humanitarian aid during wartime. Inspired by its mission, she became determined to establish a similar organization in the United States. After years of lobbying government officials and educating the public, Barton succeeded in forming the American Red Cross on May 21, 1881, in Washington, D.C. She became the organization’s first president and remained in that role for more than two decades.

Under Barton’s leadership, the American Red Cross expanded its mission beyond wartime aid to include assistance during natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes, epidemics, and fires. This broader humanitarian approach helped shape the organization into the disaster relief agency Americans recognize today.

Over the years, the American Red Cross has responded to countless emergencies, from hurricanes and wildfires to terrorist attacks and global conflicts. Millions of volunteers and workers have carried forward Barton’s original mission of helping people in times of crisis. Her determination, bravery, and compassion not only changed the lives of Civil War soldiers but also permanently transformed humanitarian aid in America. More than 140 years after its founding, the organization Clara Barton created on May 21, 1881, remains a symbol of hope, relief, and service around the world.
