A “Safe” Senate Seat Now Too Close to Call Upends Democrat Daydreams

There is a current vogue among the establishment media and politically undernourished Democrats to assert there is a realistic path to liberal progressive control of the 2027 U.S. Senate, dislodging the current Republican majority.

This electoral daydreaming seemed not so fanciful last year because Republicans must defend almost twice as many seats as the Democrats must defend. As the key races have developed this year, however, it has become clear that most of the seats currently held by the GOP will not be competitive.

Republicans currently hold 53 Senate seats, and the tie-breaking vice presidency, so Democrats will need a net pickup of at least four seats to regain control.

Initially, only about six races (out of 33) appeared competitive. Among the Republican-held seats up for re-election, Democrats had hopes of winning in North Carolina, Maine, and Ohio. Among the Democrat-held seats, Republicans had their eye on Michigan, Georgia, and New Hampshire.

But a combination of retirements (North Carolina and Minnesota) and some very bitter intraparty primary challenges (Texas, Minnesota, Maine, and Michigan) has altered the competitive political environment.

As the races now stand, Republicans are favored to pick up the seat of the retiring Gary Peters in Michigan. Although the primary is not until August 4, far-left candidate Abdul El-Sayed has taken a polling lead. The overwhelming Republican favorite, former Rep. Mike Rogers, is favored in a hypothetical matchup against El-Sayed.

If Republicans do flip Michigan, Democrats will need to pick up five seats (not four) in order to have control. Their best hopes of doing so are in North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Texas, and Alaska.

But Democrats’ woes don’t stop there. Minnesota has now emerged as an unexpected likely close race – and the potential for a second GOP Senate pick-up. This presents the Democrats with a nearly impossible path to win control.

With Democratic-Farmer Labor Party (DFL) incumbent Tina Smith retiring, two high-profile DFL officeholders, Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan and 2nd District Congresswoman Angie Craig, announced they were running. But Flanagan faces backlash from the ongoing fraud scandals that the DFL administration – led by Governor Tim Walz, and which she is a prominent part of – is accused of ignoring and failing to prosecute.

Because Flanagan is a leader of the radical wing of the DFL, she has received endorsements from Senator Smith, former Senator Al Franken, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. The more moderate Craig, generally rated the better campaigner, has been forced to move to the left to win the nomination, and faces an uphill battle to be on the ballot.

Former TV reporter Michele Tafoya is the favorite to win the GOP nomination in Minnesota. She is facing a primary contest with eight other candidates, but is considered to be a far stronger candidate.

If the race in November is Tafoya vs. Flanagan, the GOP candidate would likely win, but a Tafoya vs. Craig race would be a toss-up.

The GOP has strong candidates in North Carolina, Ohio, Maine, and Alaska. Intraparty primaries have yet to determine GOP nominees in Texas and Georgia.

A potential close contest might occur in Nebraska, but for now, GOP Senator Pete Ricketts is favored in this solid red state.

With so many shifting dynamics as of late, the 2026 national midterm election, especially in U.S. House races, is uncertain with less than six months until Election Day. In the U.S. House contests, the many unseasonal redistricting efforts are further complicating the outcome.

But with the prospect of at least one, and in Minnesota now possibly two, Republican U.S. Senate seat pick-ups, despite uncertainty about some individual races, the question of which party will win control that body is much less in doubt.

As is almost always the case, the state of the economy and how voters feel about it will be the key to the final results. Even with temporarily higher prices for gas and other commodities arising from the conflict in the Middle East, employment and the stock market remain stable. The current U.S. role in the Middle East conflict will almost certainly be concluded in the next few months, and gas and other prices will likely fall significantly.

Anything, of course, is possible, but daydreams of outcomes that ignore the political math are not likely to actually happen when the votes are counted.

If fraud is left out of the election and the American citizens have common sense all leftist democrats would be voted out and President Trump could create an America that is prosperous for all. Law and order is restored. Racism and trans and gender identification are gone forever. Treat every citizen the same. Which we were doing for the past 30 years. Until Obama came and divided the nation. The 1% was supposed to take care of the 99%. How well did that turn out. Let’s see CA still has tent cities of homeless and more are coming in every day. 170,000 per homeless is set aside under Newsom yet they still live and defecate on the streets of LA and SF. It doesn’t t matter you could tax the 1% more and more but when the politicians waste it on the leadership and illegals and pass bills obstructing the federal government to the tune of 25 billion dollars they do not think about the people. Only they tell you that. They promise pie in the sky policies but they never materialize. When the fire started in Palisade they had every excuse in the book as to why the fire hydrants were dry and the reservoirs not holding any water. Except they never told the truth. That they cut off the flow of water to these reservoirs to protect a tiny fish nobody ever had heard off. This was a plan to get expensive real estate to build affordable housing for their base. You think so? Everybody who was involved in this scheme is going to profit. Tampon Timmy did from the fraud by the Somalians in Minnesota. Why else would they support these crooks? Can we have legitimate elections in this country? HELL NO.

We have to keep our finges crossed and pray that the folks understand and see the demoncrat corruption and have them vote Republican.
Time for the Republicans to broadcast the demoncrat corruption in the media, because the socialist media will not broadcast it on their own.

Surprised Ohio and Texas are possible Dem seats especially after the 2024 election. Being from GA, I can assure you no one can identify one single accomplishment from Sen Osshoff. If his seat cannot be flipped here, the Peach State is in trouble.

If the campaigns are based on TRUTH, the GOP should win ALL of them! We know the DIMMs play “bait-and-switch”–pretend to be moderate but fall in line with the pro-terrorist [domestic and foreign] leaders! How could any SANE person vote for these loons from the LEFT?

EVERY Republican needs to get out and vote in November! This is no time to slack off! MAGA is saving America and crushing the Leftist DemoKKKRATS, but ALL of us need to help! Why anyone would vote DemoKKKRAT is beyond my comprehension! The very future of our Constitutional Republic is at stake this November.

Praying that God’s Will will be done in November with people actually voting on ELECTION DAY and not using mail-in voting that gives the “cheaters” the information they need to flip those switches of inactive to active voters in their corrupt databases or use their algorithms to know how many ballots they need to “insert” to “select” the candidates they want to win – here in our state, mostly Democrats. So, folks, don’t give them the edge they’ve been using for years and EVERYONE vote on election day with ID and proof of citizenship so we can have a verifiable ELECTION for once. Thank you.

Once the redistricting, loss of Dem registrations and Republican gains, loss of the 90% Black and Hispanic vote is fully realized all is minority for the Democratic Party for generations. If the Save America Act is passed, then it is not minority status at hand – it is extinction, like the Whigs of old.

I am still hopeful that we can have safe, honest and legitimate elections in this country… but work has to be done by those of us who use critical thinking. I truly pray that God will correct all of the wrongs of the past elections and infuse our system with GOP election wins! (Joel 2:20-25) God is in control, so I sit and pray every day that the hammer comes down on those who cheat to win. I feel that most of the people here in CA are tired of the lies, violent protests, fraud and abuse of our tax dollars. It is a desert waste in CA on so many levels, and I think that we can expect God to change the narrative if we are diligent. I went to a “Democracy Rally” in my city to talk to the people who cannot think past what happened in the past and how they feel it is all Trump’s fault. They were mostly misinformed and really didn’t have a grasp of the here and now chain of events. Nick Shirley with his video was awesomely candid and real life… the rally people said “Who is that?” Until the correct information gets front and center on peoples’ radars, that their Medicaid/Medicare monies are being used to give illegal money to illegal shell companies that go to enrich the lives of non-US citizens here in their own state, the lies and misinformation will continue. They didn’t seem to mind me being there or criticize me… go figure. I think good thoughts, good outcomes and a change of direction. KTF (Keep the Faith!)

Americans will lose the midterms then the next presidential election if every Republican and Conservative does not get out and vote. Midterm elections historically have pathetically low voter turnout. Do not think that your one vote does not count. Republicans in multiple recent elections have lost by small margins because millions of Republican and Conservative voters would not take 10 to 15 minutes out of one of the many early voting days or election day to vote. Democrats and illegals will turn out in full force. Then there will be the typical fraud and cheating by the Democrats. a non-vote is a vote for the opposition. PLEASE vote!

The best thing that the Democrats have going for them is that Trump is causing the price of gasoline to soar and significantly increasing the price of most other products and services. Even if the war ends within a few months, it is highly unlikely that the price of gasoline and the inflation rate will drop significantly, if at all.

I often wonder how anyone can vote for a Democrat. Then I factor in the Republicans’ uncanny ability to snatch humiliating defeat from the jaws of certain victory. For example, our first term Republican war hero Congressman just stuck his thumb in the eye of Trump by attempting to drag us out of Iran before the job is done. That is the ONLY thing of note he has done in his 17 months there. So much for the several hundreds of dollars I put into his last campaign. My family will still vote for him, but despite our best efforts, he looks like he’s gonna be toast.

Just the endorsements alone should ruin Flanagan, and then there is this report of fraud, that these pols ignored, and ended the Walz career. Just saying. But I am still worried about the vote count. And also perhaps voter apathy, which is understandable since the 2020 presidential election, which was lawless to say the least, just a fact in my state.

And the courts and the state legislators would not even look at the signed affidavits of the poll watchers. Course thankful that no one got charged with perjury either. So this is why voters are understandably disheartened with our vote need.
