America 250, the official congressionally-authorized organization planning America’s semiquincentennial celebration, has announced that New York City’s Times Square Ball will drop on eight separate occasions for Independence Day this year as each of the nation’s time zones hits midnight.

America 250 made the announcement with One Times Square that the Independence Day ball drops will be part of the “Giving 4th Broadcast Benefit Show and Sea to Shining Sea Countdown.” Each ball drop will have “its own special ball design, beginning in Guam and culminating in American Samoa — creating a nearly 24-hour celebration as the nation counts down to its 250th birthday.”

The festivities will begin at 10:00 am EST on July 3, “with the first Ball Drop for the Chamorro Time Zone covering the American territories of Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, followed by a rolling series of special moments and musical performances across Puerto Rico and the continental United States.” The ball will then drop again for each time zone.

Rosie Rios, who serves as the chairwoman of America 250, highlighted the significance of the celebration.

“This is more than a countdown. It’s a moment that brings the entire country together, one time zone at a time,” Rios said. “From Guam to New York to Alaska to American Samoa we are creating a shared experience where every American can see themselves in this celebration and be part of something bigger than any one city or moment.”

One Times Square is the building in New York City that has hosted the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop since 1907. The building will “serve as the live broadcast stage for the nation to watch and celebrate.” Americans can watch the ball drops on both television broadcasts and livestream platforms. The Eastern time zone ball drop will serve as the “centerpiece” of the celebration.

America 250 explained that the countdown festivities will be the opening act for “America’s Block Party on July 4, a nationwide celebration spanning major cities and local communities across the country.” These block party events will serve as an overall larger charity event. America 250 stated that “all July 4 activations will support Giving 4th, a nationwide initiative designed to make July 4, 2026, the largest day of charitable giving in American history.”

On July 5, visitors in New York City will also be able to view and read the Declaration of Independence “transcribed on a glass wall of the Times Square Skywalk, reflect on its meaning, and capture a one-of-a-kind photo moment with the founding document’s words set against the Times Square streetscapes.”

America 250 is an organization comprised of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and its nonprofit arm America250.org, Inc. Congress established the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission through legislation in 2016. The organization is responsible for spearheading many of the festivities this year to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.

Hooray for times square, and America 250. I had begun to wonder if Mamdani would allow the Macy’s fireworks this year. Our heritage is worth celebrating.
