This week, Virginia’s Abigail Spanberger became the latest Democrat governor to sign a slate of radical gun control bills into law, joining her liberal compatriots in other states. But the evidence simply doesn’t suggest that restricting Americans’ Second Amendment freedoms makes anyone safer.
It doesn’t take a genius-level intellect to realize that restrictive gun control statutes are no cure-all for crime and violence. In fact, many of the places in America with the strictest gun laws see the most crimes involving a firearm.
Baltimore, Maryland, is a prime case study. Old Line State residents must obtain a Handgun Qualification License with training, fingerprints, and background checks just to purchase a handgun, and a separate “Wear & Carry” permit to legally carry one in public. Baltimore adds local restrictions, such as prohibiting carrying handguns within 100 yards of places like schools, parks, and public buildings, and broadly restricting the public carry of long guns.
Still, Baltimore consistently ranks among the top five most dangerous cities in the nation for gun-related crime – right alongside cities like Memphis, Tennessee, and New Orleans, Louisiana, in gun-friendly states.
Washington, D.C., has also long been a national leader in anti-gun extremism. All firearms must be registered with the police (including background checks, fingerprinting, and safety training), and residents must obtain a concealed carry license to carry a handgun, while open carry is completely prohibited.
Things used to be even worse. Before the landmark D.C. v. Heller Supreme Court decision in 2008, the Second Amendment was effectively null and void in the nation’s capital, with the District virtually banning civilian possession of handguns and requiring that all other firearms be kept locked or disassembled at all times, even in the home.
Like Baltimore, however, D.C. has one of the highest rates of gun-related crime in the nation (although that may be changing thanks to President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops).
Colorado provides another example of the dismal failure of gun control laws. Democrats have dominated the state government there for more than a decade, and they used that power to pass a bevy of anti-gun legislation. Each time, liberals promised the new laws would make the state safer.
Despite this, however, Colorado went from a below-average murder rate in 2013 to the second-most dangerous state in the country in 2025.
It’s the same story time and again in liberal cities and states. California, Illinois, and New York have consistently gone as far as the courts will let them in restricting residents’ ability to purchase and possess firearms for sport, hunting, or personal safety. Yet these states, and particularly the large cities in these states with even more restrictive laws, remain hotbeds of violence.
To be sure, plenty of cities in red states have their own problems with crimes involving firearms. But much of this can again be traced to local liberal policies such as the refusal of far-left prosecutors to punish gun offenders or prosecute lower-level crimes that often escalate into more serious offenses involving firearms.
At the same time, there are multiple states with considerably high rates of per capita gun ownership, which also have extremely low rates of gun-related crime – Wyoming, the Dakotas, Utah, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine all make this list.
There is no doubt that violence involving firearms is a complex issue with many causes. But if Democrats’ argument is that more guns and freer access to guns are the determinative reason for higher crime and higher violent crime in particular, then it should be the case that states with more guns would be more violent. That simply is not the case.
The reason for this is simple: criminals don’t particularly care about gun laws. Individuals who are already willing to commit violent crimes think nothing of breaking the law again to obtain a firearm. It is primarily responsible, law-abiding Americans who are negatively affected by anti-gun legislation.
Through this lens, there is a compelling argument that strict gun laws actually encourage more crime, as criminals are less concerned that their victims will have the means to fight back.
While gun control activists constantly bemoan the number of firearm incidents, they conveniently ignore the number of crimes prevented by responsible gun owners. The “good guy with a gun” stories rarely make headlines. In truth, we will likely never know just how much violent crime is deterred by responsible gun owners simply by exercising their Second Amendment freedoms.
A few years ago, I wrote a piece about the whitetail deer hunting season in my home state of Wisconsin. The article looked at the sheer number of people trotting through the woods during the 2018 gun-deer season and the paltry amount – single digits, in fact – of firearms-related incidents.
Think about it – virtual armies, thousands and thousands of people, armed with guns of all types, pressing through the woods at any one time. And how many were out there to commit violent crimes against their fellow citizens? If that short time period in November is any indicator of larger trends, widespread legal gun ownership and use are not a strong precursor to violence.
Still, states like Virginia are advancing sweeping new anti-gun laws built on the same promises that have come up empty time and again in Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and dozens of other liberal locales nationwide. It’s yet another reminder that the gun control lobby has little, if any, room for history, details, nuance, or the basics of the Constitution.
They will never let the facts get in the way of their political agenda.

Here we have folks like Abigail Spanberger, David Hogg and those of their ilk, pontificating about gun control.
In 2021 alone, there were over twice as many deaths from fentanyl than those from gun violence. Moreover, that same year, there were over twice as many deaths from fentanyl than those killed in the entire vietnam war, yet Democrats and RINOs allowed open borders and allowed drugs and “unlicensed pharmacists” aka drug dealers, and gangs unvetted access into the country.
Now it seems quite obvious to me this is really not about public safety at all, but rather it’s about total control.
The author’s last line says it all about the Democrats. The restrictions passed by BLUE state legislation has done nothing to curb crime. They only want to know where the firearms of law-abiding citizens are located so they can confiscate these firearms at a future date.
States with fewer Dem politicians and voters are safer.
Safer? Anyone who claims that “gun control” makes anyone or any place safer is a liar, a self-delusional fool, or both. Locations and jurisdictions with more “gun control” almost always have higher crime rates – MUCH HIGHER crime rates. Criminals, by definition, do not obey laws and are thus unaffected by “gun control.” Only the law-abiding are impacted by “gun control” laws, which essentially leave them defenseless in the face of armed criminals. As but a single example of this, virtually all mass shootings take place in “gun free zones,” which are nothing more than free fire zones for criminals and homicidal maniacs. If Leftists, who are always the ones pushing for more “gun control,” were even remotely concerned with crime, criminals, and public safety as they claim, they would not be working to disarm the law-abiding. But their goal is not to help anyone, but rather to disarm the citizenry so they will not be able to challenge the dictatorship the Left has been working toward since the end of WWII. The key word in the term “gun control” is not “gun” – it is “control.”
Gun Control= More Crime not less
Great read and a good picture of the fallacies surrounding gun control. Abbie-normal-Gail Spamburger is a perfect example of a radical leftist, who craves control of the population above all else, with zero consideration of our constitutional rights. Another reason why I’m a refugee from the Communist-wealth of Virgina-forniastan.
there are two things the politicians in blue states can do to keep law-abiding citizens safe: ENFORCE THE LAWS ON THE BOOKS AND PUNISH CRIMINALS TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW! Trouble is, they won’t do it.
Colorado is a perfect example of Ex-Californians turning a purple state into the unmitigated disaster that is now Colorado. The governor is in competition for the Leon Trotsky award. I try not to spend any money when I visit there because the governor will waste it on something stupid.
The first thing a oppressive government does to protect itself is ban ALL firearms. The only exceptions are government agents and the military to varying degrees. Doing so prevents the citizenship from defending itself from such oppression.
“To disarm the people…[i]s the most effectual way to enslave them.”
– George Mason, referencing advice given to the British Parliament by Pennsylvania governor Sir William Keith, The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adooption of the Federal Constitution, June 14, 1788
“The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.”
– Thomas Jefferson, Commonplace Book (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria), 1774-1776
The liberals/Democrats/Socialist do not give a hoot about gun safety. They want to restrict guns from a law-abiding public… so that when these very same liberals/Democrats/Socialists go for their eventual takeover attempt of the USA, they will not have to deal with an ARMED and motivated citizenry.
When will our political people realize that guns do not kill, people do. And thus far drugs and drunk drivers have certainly taken their place in the killing field. Where is the deterrent for using guns in armed robbery and on the innocent police officer, just doing the job he/she was hired to do. We used to have the death penalty for such killings. Now the simple minded politicians and prosecutors blame an inanimate object.
We need more good people with guns, than currently bad ones with guns. Keep our 2nd amendment strong!
Gun control laws are a gateway to banning the other rights “We the People” have that are theoretically protected by The Constitution of the United States. The marxists have already begun to encroach on other rights with laws restricting the use of digital media.
Disarm the law obeying citizen, surround yourself with the private army and don’t touch the criminal, that will bring law and order.

and THAT ladies and gentlemen is what it comes down to.
About 13 000 people nationwide are murdered by drunk drivers each year. Why aren’t liberals campaigning to ban motor vehicles? Simple: because they need them.
The criminals love to hear that more guns will be in a lock box in your home. Maybe not
knowing for sure will help, but crazies and someone on drugs aren’t known for their reasoning. Neither are a lot of our politicians.
States with Gun Control ARE safer……for Criminals!
First: If you live in Colorado and own a gun, you are are less than a 2nd Class citizen, you have no rights at all, the 2nd Amendment has been urinated on by this Low-life Governor (Polis) and his Constitution hating Anti-American Sleaze State House, They have a true love affair with Tren de Arugua who they let roam the streets un-checked. They have restricted the 2nd Amendment every way possible, and I advise you not to move to Colorado, you are not safe here.
Second: This Low-Life Governor wants to run for President and America cannot let that happen he is a true Socialist/Communist, American hater,
Third: We have 4 out right 2nd Amendment haters and a Chief Justice who will not go out of hos way toprotect the Constitution.
Fourth: The only way to Alter/Change the Constitution is by Article 5 of the Constitution
Gun laws only serve to empower criminals. If you live in Cali-rado you better get that semiautomatic firearm you’re thinking about buying before August 1. Otherwise, you’re going to have to jump through the many hoops similar to Maryland’s law before you’re approved to purchase. Does anyone actually believe this BS will make CO any safer? Criminals are loving this since they’re on the fast track to getting a gun in the black market.
Criminals are safer. Law-abiders are definitely not.
We are in the beginning of a full socialist/communist takeover attempt in this country, as we speak. We have no functioning Constitution with blue states carving out the rights that no longer apply to us. Trump should exercise some authority, bring the troops hoe from the Middle East and deal with our greatest enemies, who are walking the streets of America and holding positions in our government.
Seems to me that practicing Criminal Control would be a lot more effective. Maybe the Dems could try that?
The 2nd Amendment says that we have the legal right to own and bare arms. I feel if you have the legal right to do so and have obtained the proper carry license that it should be valid in all the states, not stopping at the state line as much of us face. If you are a legal carry permittee in Connecticut (the third smallest state) you cannot cross the state line with your firearm, Connecticut is landlocked with Mass to our north RI to our east and NY to our west. We need to fix this so that us legal permittees can carry nation wide without further restrictions.
