Trump Administration Launches New Hiring Program To Help Young Adults

The White House and Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced a new program on Monday called the “Early Career Talent Network” to better connect younger adults with full-time career opportunities within the federal government.

OPM explained that this new network will “help build a stronger pipeline of talent into critical mission roles across government, including finance, human resources, engineering, project management, and procurement.” This program is part of a broader effort to “modernize federal hiring” and specifically help younger Americans find meaningful employment.

OPM Director Scott Kupor explained the importance of the Trump administration’s new approach to hiring young talent.

“Building a strong pipeline of early-career talent is essential to the future of the federal workforce,” Kupor said. “We are making it easier for talented individuals to connect with meaningful careers in public service while helping agencies efficiently identify the talent they need to deliver results for the American people.”

“The ultimate goal here is very simple, but audacious: Make it really simple to match the best talent with the best opportunities,” Kupor added. “The single-user mode of the past — where a single applicant applied to a single job opportunity as a single agency — doesn’t accomplish that goal. But a network model will.”

While President Trump has prioritized streamlining government operations and cutting waste, fraud, and abuse, he has also emphasized the importance of hiring talented individuals to more effectively and efficiently serve the public.

The network is available on the website EarlyCareers.gov. This platform allows Americans who are interested in a potential career to share their information with hiring departments. There are several options to explore potential internships, look into contracting opportunities, and search job listings for “project management jobs,” “tech jobs,” and “finance jobs.”

Fox News reported on Monday that OPM’s new program is an effort to hire “Gen Z workers to rebuild the federal talent pipeline after a year of Department of Government Efficiency cuts and to compete more aggressively with the private sector.” Fox also reported that “only about 7% of the federal workforce is under age 30,” in comparison to 22% of the non-government workforce.

Additionally, “more than 75,000 federal employees accepted a deferred resignation program—with more than 280,000 layoffs of federal workers and contractors” last year. An administration official explained the significance of the DOGE reductions last year compared to this new effort to hire younger talent.

“DOGE helped cut back where government was too large or inefficient,” the official said. “This focus is on hiring—rebuilding the federal workforce with skilled early-career talent who can help tackle the challenges facing our country.”

An administration official also explained to Fox News that Kupor intends to “get the word out that folks early in their career can come to government, work on critically important, unique projects where they learn skills that will be marketable to both the private and public sector in the future.” In short, Kupor wants “to make government cool again.”

That’s nice, but how about older folks with major responsibilities??? I am unemployed almost three years. I deferred my mortgage payment, visit the food bank for food and am drawing on what little I have left in my 401K. I am a Sr. Executive Assistant who gets interviews, but no job. It could be at my level they don’t want to pay the salary. The lowest I saw was an Executive Assistant paying $14/hour. That’s barely above minimum wage. Who can live on that? I’m not ready to retire. I hope to make it to 70. We older workers need serious help also.

How about something to aid in part-time work for those of use in retirement drawing Social Security but don’t want to go over the max amount that can be drawn before penalty? Or better yet, why not remove that max amount obstacle altogether?

On the face of it, sounds discriminatory. The federal government should be hiring the best of the best regardless of age.

It looks like you are not preaching to the choir here. And I am not denigrating anyone else’s opinion.
There is a need to show our young a pathway to meaningful employment. That 7% figure startled me.
