Dear AMAC,
I applied for a Medigap at the beginning of January, and I’m still awaiting approval. It looks like the carrier is dragging their feet. My policy is supposed to start on the first of February, so I’m worried it won’t be issued on time. How long does it take to get approved for a Medigap plan?
—Dave (Dallas, TX)
Hello Dave,
If you’re waiting for an application update, you’re not alone. In recent months, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) application timelines have slowed significantly. One likely reason is that carriers are still processing Medigap plan applications submitted during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which ended this past December. Nevertheless, it’s clear there are a backlog of pending applications across the board.
Here’s how to help speed up the process:
Tip #1: Double-Check Your Application for Accuracy
One of the most common causes of processing delays is inaccurate or incomplete information. Before submitting your application, carefully review:
- Your full name and home address
- Medicare number
- Prescription drug list
- Provider information
- Any other errors or omissions
If any of these details don’t match your Medical Information Bureau (MIB) report or Social Security record, your application may be flagged for manual review, causing further delays.
Tip #2: Submit Supporting Documents Early
If the insurance company requests extra documentation—such as proof of lost coverage or a copy of your previous insurance card—try to provide this to your insurance agent before you submit the application. They can attach these documents to your application, helping the insurer process everything smoothly.
Remember, your application may pass through several departments. Having everything ready from the start helps prevent unnecessary back-and-forth.
Tip #3: Don’t Miss Important Calls or Emails
Sometimes insurance agents or carriers need to contact you by phone or email to verify information. If your spam blocker is on or you miss their call, you could get stuck playing phone tag.
We know spam calls are frustrating, but temporarily turning off your spam blocker or screening your calls more closely could prevent unnecessary delays.
What If My Medigap Approval is Still Taking Too Long?
If you’ve done everything right and your application is still pending, the best course of action is often to wait. Many major Medigap carriers are currently taking anywhere from several days to a few weeks to finalize approvals. That’s why we ask that you do not cancel your existing coverage until your new policy has officially been issued.
If your application is still pending after your requested effective date, talk to your insurance agent. They may be able to move the effective date forward. If no changes are made and the policy is approved late, coverage will begin retroactively from the original effective date.
Can I Cancel My Application and Reapply For A Medigap Plan?
Yes, but with caution. You can cancel your Medigap application if necessary. Just keep in mind that you’ll need to start the process from the beginning if you decide to reapply later.
We hope this gives you a clearer picture of why Medigap approval is taking longer—and how you can help move things along. While the delays are frustrating, a few simple steps can make a big difference.
