Is Legacy Media Finally Ready to Admit Its Honesty Problem?

Does legacy television news have a future? For a variety of reasons, it seems unlikely. Most of those reasons boil down to this: Americans just don’t trust the establishment media. But if veteran newsman Tony Dokoupil’s recent monologue on this subject is any indication, the industry still isn’t prepared to acknowledge that it has sacrificed public trust for the sake of advancing liberal partisan narratives.

Let’s give him one-and-a-half cheers, however. Dokoupil is at least willing to say out loud that very few people trust his network, CBS News, or the rest of the legacy media. Dokoupil is set to start as a new anchor for CBS on Monday.

In his admission of guilt, Dokoupil confessed that he has had “thousands of conversations” with ordinary Americans, from his mom’s West Virginia neighbors to his own New York neighborhood, to countless other spots in the country, about what Americans think legacy news has misreported. He listed a few of the topics: NAFTA, the Iraq War, Hillary Clinton’s emails, COVID-19 lockdowns, Russiagate, the Hunter Biden laptop, and “the president’s fitness for office.”

It’s a pretty thorough list, to be honest. The media indeed screwed up all of these stories, to the detriment of the country.

Dokoupil’s explanation of what went wrong, however (in other words, why the media failed to report these stories accurately) is the reason he cannot receive even two cheers. “On too many stories, the press has missed the story,” he said. “Because we’ve taken into account the perspective of advocates and not the average American. Or we put too much weight in the analysis of academics or elites, and not enough on you.”

Politically speaking, one can see why he wants to frame this media bias as a matter of “elites,” “academics,” and “advocates” versus ordinary Americans.

That explanation has some truth to it. During the height of COVID, legacy journalists kept telling Americans all sorts of myths about lockdowns, masks, the susceptibility of children to the disease, and much more. All of these were sold as “The Science.” A parade of “academics” and “experts” were brought forth to scold all those who cast doubt on whatever new commandments were being brought down from the mountain by Tony Fauci.

The more important truth, however, is this: on COVID and all the other stories Dokoupil mentioned, there were elites and experts who could and did contradict these narratives. Medical researchers such as Jay Bhattacharya, Marty Makary, and Scott Atlas were all vocal critics of the approaches and conclusions of the public health apparatus in the early days of the pandemic. Academics like these three, affiliated with Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and many other prestigious medical and scientific organizations, were treated as cranks.

The reality is that there are always elites and even academics (though fewer of the latter because the academy has become actively hostile toward anyone right-of-center) willing to give assessments on a variety of topics that are contrary to the establishment narrative.

But to the legacy media, these were the wrong elites and academics. These other, disfavored academics and elites were advocating the wrong points.

What were the “right” points? This question brings us to Dokoupil’s third category of media talking heads: “advocates.” Nobody objects to the media giving a platform to advocates. People curious about stories want to know what the people who have vested interests in them will say and how they will spin things. Again, however, the problem with the legacy media is that only advocates of particular views are allowed to speak.

What Dokoupil fails to admit is that the media did not just “miss” the truth about stories like Russiagate and the Hunter Biden laptop. They actively and consciously suppressed facts and views that conflicted with their own preferred narrative.

The real problem with legacy news organizations is that Americans can see that decisions about what to cover and how to cover it are nakedly partisan. In all of the examples Dokoupil cites, whether the media covered each story was determined using this analysis: 1.) whether a story hurts the Republicans and their allies, and 2.) whether it helps the Democrats and their allies. To give one prominent example, former CBS journalist Catherine Herridge recently spoke about her own investigation of the Hunter Biden laptop. Nearly two years after social media and legacy media went along with the “expert” view that the Hunter Biden laptop story was “Russian disinformation,” Herridge had done the work of a journalist in investigating it. It was certainly not disinformation. The laptop was real and certainly Biden’s. And it had some atrocious information about Hunter and his father.

But Herridge’s damning revelations were buried because they could hurt the Democrats and thus help Republicans. “When we did the story, we did it after the [2022] midterms,” she said. “I argued against that because it was ready before the midterms, and my training is that you should always do the story when it’s ready to go. You should not be dictated by the political cycle.”

This is the reality that we all know. Dokoupil knows it, too. He might as well admit it, instead of hinting around.

Are there reasons for hope? I think there might be. In October, Dokoupil challenged Senator Elizabeth Warren to her face about her denial that Democrats want to give taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits to illegal aliens. In November, he interviewed New York Fire Department commissioner Robert S. Tucker, who announced his resignation because of Zohran Mamdani’s electoral victory.

To his credit, Dokoupil hasn’t been following the political criteria for reporting. Nor has he been paying attention to “ordinary Americans” versus “elites” and “academics,” as parts of his speech might imply. Instead, he’s just trying to do something he mentions at the end of his speech: “telling the truth.” Sure, his reporting still contains some things for conservatives to gripe about. But acknowledging that the media has lost the trust of the public and needs to work to gain it back is a start.

If the legacy media survives and finds a way to thrive, it will be because more reporters and executives decide to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth – and because they decide that the truth is more important than propping up the Democrat Party.

Mr. Deavel do you really think they (the legacy media) will do that (tell the truth)? I will not put too much trust or faith in that. The truth must be spoken and not hidden. The legacy media is too much in the bag for the democratic party and I believe that they will continue to spout the lies to conflict or distort the American public, but here’s hoping I am wrong.

A study by Syracuse University in 2022 reported that Democrats outnumber Republicans in the news media by 10 to 1. Naturally, the journos insist that “We don’t let our personal politics influence our news reporting” but they will never convince anybody else of that.

I agree with WJS‘s comment. I’m certainly not going to believe they’re gonna make a complete turnaround to reporting honestly as to what’s going on in the news. We shall see. They’ve been doing this for so long. I don’t think it’s gonna be very easy for them to try to be honest in their reporting.

The people involved in the “mainstream media” have proven beyond a shadow of doubt that they have NO integrity and should never again be trusted. If the networks want to be trusted again they need to fire just about everyone in their employ and find people with integrity, not easy with educational institutions brainwashing with leftwing/democrat political bias.

I want to know who are the “corporate” executives that filter the news. Who are the faceless people that tell the anchormen what to say, and not say. What are their names, and why are they in the positions they are in?

Rush used to say they dont even need talking points. They all know what they need to do already. As you mention in your article, the problem is the media starts at a narrative and then goes and finds stories and people to confirm it.

They obsess over highest level politics, and dont report context or related history or conflicting opinions.

They are also just giving people what they want…

Let’s keep in mind that legacy media was bought and paid for by Obama and his administration who did so by bringing in many, many staff members with direct connections to legacy media. I have no doubt this control continued through the “Biden” (Obama) administration.

This entire phenomenon sprouts from the 2010’s when CRT, universities, and the Obama Administration pushed the nonsense that the subjective “truth” of one’s experience was every bit as valid as the objective truth despite one’s experience. Obama instituted and executive order repealing the rule that broadcast journalism be required to avoid propaganda, CRT and bias studies classes (better known as racial and gender grievance studies programs) in universities started defining truth as “one’s lived experience” rather than any objective reality, and the marquis schools of journalism- starting with Columbia- started promoting the idea that a goal of objectivity in journalism was a dated concept… that advocacy journalism was every contributor’s moral responsibility. I think we will have years to go before this trend is fully reversed. But the pendulum swinging away from leftism as an automatic response to every issue is a big first step. Thank God Trump won.

No one person can save the legacy media, given the network of wolves they’re surrounded by, anymore than one person could save a country without first destroying the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th circles of leadership.

I can name the first news anchor who pushed narrative over news, and he did it in order to reshape America to the left’s views: Dan Rather. He was a huge influencer over his fellow journalists. My conservative father detested him and I understood that he was in the wrong even when I was in grade school. Dad called him “Walleyed Dan, the Nixon Killer.”

Can’t be fixed. I used to work in the press as a young man. The only thing that mattered at a couple of organizations that I worked for was the correct spin. The end. Accuracy was irrelevant. Did it sell ads? Publish it. No sale? Suppress it. Further editor’s agenda? Publish it. Not, forget it. That is not a fixable problem and, IMHO, can’t be with the current newsroom climate. You’d have to fire everybody and start over with all new faces. You’d also have to get rid of “journalists” and replace them with real reporters.

Good evaluation of the legacy media’s role in the betrayal of the public’s interest.Missing element was the role of the college and universitiy trainig that somehow missed the “non-partisan” and “seeking truth” role of the press. I pray that the optimistic view of the future will prevail.

Years ago we heard “journalists” talk about wanting a Pulitzer Prize for breaking a great story, even if it meant going against their own political party. Now, we have people that are not journalists, but are nothing more than errand boys and girls for the large, corporate, liberal leaders that would cut their throats is they dared go against their marching orders. What modern media people seem to have forgotten is that real “journalists” should have no real party affiliation, they should care about the truth and breaking that big story, even if it means “outing” members of people that generally vote the same way they do. Liberals today would vote for Hitler, Stalin or Mao, as long as they had a D next to their name. That sounds like hyperbole, but is it really?

Truth is absolute, not subjective, it is not what we want it to be or as we see it, it just is. It can’t be altered or adjusted, it is, what it is. Like it or not. Journalists to be credible and believable must accept that fact and report accordingly, only then people will believe it. Is it possible, that is the question.

Not a chance! I will believe my sister telling me the electric fence is turned off go ahead and touch it, before I believe anything the legacy Media says. They are as dishonest as the Democrat party is. As a matter of fact I think they are one in the same. They would do well to learn from the third Reich. After Hitler got into power he killed all the media and all the unions that put him there cuz he knew they could take him out. And there will be nobody to stand up for the media

Check out Walter Cronkite, the left wing Anti-American “journalist” did his best to turn the US public against the VN war in the 60’s and 70’s, but carefully hiding what he actually meant behind very veiled speech and hidden meanngs because he didn’t want to be called out for his radical feelings.

Journalism classes at colleges and universities for decades have always been left of center and biased. Fast forward the last 20 years, journalism schools now teach full-blown Socialism, Communism, anti-Americanism, and 100% BIASED AGAINST CONSERVATIVES. Students and graduates of these cess pools of LIES, INDOCTRINATION, AND BLUE-PRINTING OF HOW TO TWIST AND SPIN FACTS TO SERVE THE LEFTIST AGENDAS

They have earned their factual title of FAKE NEWS and why anyone with at least two working brain cells DO NOT TRUST THEM ANY LONGER.

WHY? BECAUSE ALL THE FAKE NEWS MEDIAS AND SO-CALLED REPORTERS LIE, SPIN AND TWIST EVERY STORY TO FIT THEIR AGENDA, AND THEY CAN NOT BE TRUSTED. SIMPLE AS THAT!!!
