National Reciprocity Will Save Lives

I live with a rare connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a genetic mutation that affects my joints, skin, and overall stability. My level of ability changes daily. Some mornings I can walk unassisted, other days I rely on a cane, braces, or even a wheelchair. I never quite know what my day will bring.

That uncertainty means I must always be prepared for the worst.

Most people think of that “preparation” in terms of medicine, mobility aids, or physical therapy. For me, it also means being prepared to protect myself. I don’t carry a firearm with the intent to harm anyone. I carry so that I will not be harmed.

A few years ago, I attended a public event in Arizona. Being a responsible, law-abiding citizen, I followed the rules: the venue prohibited firearms, so I left my pistol safely at home. A friend picked me up and dropped me off, and I didn’t think much of it.

Later that night, as I was waiting outside to be picked up, I noticed a man I’d met briefly through a dating app lingering nearby. He waited until I was alone, then approached me, insisting he could give me a ride home. I said “No, thank you” more than once. He didn’t listen. Instead, he grabbed my arm and began dragging me toward his car — the door already open.

In that terrifying instant, I realized what was happening: he was trying to abduct me.

And then, I realized something else. I didn’t have my firearm. I had no means to defend myself.

By some miracle, I managed to break free and get away. The fear and helplessness of that moment have never left me.

That experience was a clear reminder that evil doesn’t care about rules, signs or laws. It also reminded me that, as much as they want to help, the police can’t always get there in time. For people like me — who already live with physical vulnerability — being prepared to defend ourselves isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

That’s why I support the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act. This legislation ensures that law-abiding citizens who are licensed and trained to carry in their home state can legally protect themselves across state lines, just as they can drive across state lines with their driver’s license.

Today, a woman like me who travels for medical appointments or to visit family could become a criminal simply for crossing a border with a firearm. That makes no sense. Our constitutional rights — and our ability to defend ourselves — shouldn’t end at the state line.

Polling shows that most Americans agree with this simple concept. A recent Quantus survey found that 77 percent of Americans believe law-abiding citizens should be able to defend themselves rather than wait for police, and nearly two-thirds support making concealed-carry permits valid nationwide. The idea isn’t controversial; it’s common sense.

For me, this isn’t about politics or partisanship. It’s about survival. I may not know what my body will allow me to do tomorrow, but I do know this: I refuse to ever feel that helpless again. I carry because I value life — mine and others’ — and I want the law to recognize that my right to protect myself doesn’t change just because I cross an invisible line on a map.

The second amendment clearly states that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
It shouldn’t be necessary to get any state government’s permission to carry a firearm.

I am in full agreement with the author and wish her well with her personal challenges. I would like to point out, however, that if The Second Amendment were interpreted and understood today as it was meant to be interpreted and understood when written, none of this would be necessary. In addition, the 24,000+ gun control laws currently in effect in this nation at the federal, state, and local levels would all be declared as what they really are, which is completely unconstitutional, and thrown in the trash where they belong. Then none of this nonsense with reciprocity and permits would be necessary.

Evil exists, the democrat left cannot grasp this concept that an superior response is sometimes the only thing that can equal the playing field. Society is safer when criminals don’t know who’s armed, instead thugs are counting on an unarmed society graciously provided by democrat politicians and their supporters. Until they get a taste of what it is to be a victim there will be no change. Our Second Amendment has been watered down I scarcely recognize it. Being background checked to purchase a weapon yet not being able to carry one without paying for permission is a good example of infringement. Criminals have no such restrictions.

I agree full heartedly. While I have a concealed carry license in Pennsylvania, I don’t have that right in Maryland which is where I now live.I have never carried because I am not adequately trained and I respect the laws too much to carry recklessly. I too am elderly and deal with serious medical issues. However, why should lawful citizens be penalized by an imaginary line on a map. The bad guys ALWAYS carry without benefit of a piece of paper. Don’t take away the rights of good people. We must be free to defend ourselves.

Absolutely! The Globalists are desperate to disarm the people for total control. They use false flags to convince the sheeple that guns are bad. Gun control leads to genocide. There has never been a better time to learn about firearms, the proper use and most importantly using them safely.

We need to protect the 2nd amendment in every state! We need a right to bear arms and concealed carry to protect ourselves and our families! The elitist, the Democratic Party, Marxist, Communist, Muslims/Hamas, Socialist all want to take our weapons away to better take over our country and control use! You have judges and lawyers letting murders out on bond so they kill again and again, same with child molesters and rapist and on and on! The Democratic Party and their allies are the biggest murders not the guns!

Thank you for your article which makes very clear the terrifying reality you and others such as you who suffer with debilitating illnesses and syndromes face every day. I agree that legal means of protection, especially those which allow us to protect ourselves from harm, should not end at the state line, but should be recognized in all fifty states.

Already exists and being violated

It still has limitations! You can’t conceal carry in federal bldgs, hospitals & posted retail businesses. That leaves trying to secure your firearm in your vehicle & walking unarmed! It should be concealed carry anywhere.

I live in Texas and I will stay in Texas until Jesus comes to take me home. I have the license and I have the firearm, with plenty of ammunition to see that no one will bother me. I will NEVER be in a state that does not allow me to carry a firearm legally.

The people with guns are in control. The left needs to disarm people in order to control with their guns. Dictators seize arms in order to be in control.

Suddenly EVERYONE has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome LOL

I don’t really believe this condition is as real or as debilitating as the author makes it out to be. It’s just a bid for extra special attention and snowflake treatment.

Lets face the FACTS… There is NO 2A RIGHT to “bear arms” in America. Yes there is a Constitutional amendment that says we have that “right” however this has become just words on paper. SCOUS refuses to uphold the “right”, most states only grant you that “right” IF you can afford to buy it and then that “right” is so over regulated you don’t know one day to the next what that “right” really is and god help you if someone decides they think you might harm yourself or just doesn’t like you under the red flag laws … No, America no longer has a “right to keep and bear arms” America has the PRIVILEGE
