Let’s say you paid top dollar to go to a fancy, five-star restaurant, and the waiter served you warmed-over McDonald’s. Would you ever go back?
Maybe, if you didn’t know any better.
I started thinking about that after I recently changed my residency from Virginia to California (for reasons I won’t go into) and noticed that my state income taxes had gone up by more than 33%.
Over the course of the year, I will pay California $2,115 more than I’d been paying in Virginia, which is hardly a low-tax state (Virginia has the 14th highest income tax burden in the country). Not only are income taxes higher, California’s sales tax is 66% higher, and the gasoline tax is almost double Virginia’s. Those are just the ones I know about.
So, I decided to look into what exactly I’m getting for the five-star cost of California’s government for basic services governments are expected to provide.
It’s infuriating. California is ripping off its taxpayers big time. Consider:
Crime: Despite having roughly the same number of police officers per capita, California has a “crime index” that is 47% higher than Virginia’s, and California has the sixth-highest rate of violent crime of all 50 states. Virginia has the 14th lowest.
Education: If you’re a teacher, California is a great place to live. They are the highest paid in the nation and have the fourth-lowest student-to-teacher ratio. But if you’re a parent? Your children are getting screwed. Eighth-grade reading, math, science, and writing scores are significantly below the national average, while Virginia’s are significantly higher. Virginia ranks 7 in average SAT scores, and California comes in 23rd.
Infrastructure: Despite having the nation’s highest gasoline taxes, California ranks in the bottom three when it comes to road conditions, with more than 25% of its roads in serious need of repair. In Virginia, just 9% of its roads are in poor shape.
Opportunity: How much economic opportunity are California’s sky-high taxes buying? None. The state ranks dead last in U.S. News and World Report’s “opportunity” ranking. And it ranks 47th in the Rich States, Poor States ranking of economic outlook.
It has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 5.5%, the most people on welfare, and the most homeless people.
It has the most progressive income tax yet is the fifth-worst state when it comes to income inequality. (Virginia comes in 29th on tax progressivity and 22nd on income inequality.)
It is the least affordable state for housing. Virginia is 35th.
Fiscal responsibility. Incredibly, despite the fact that California is one of the highest-tax states in the nation, it ranks No. 42 in U.S. News and World Report’s ranking for fiscal stability.
And it’s getting worse as out-of-control costs and the flight of hundreds of thousands out of the state have left yawning budget gaps. A new Reason Foundation study finds that California is almost half a trillion dollars in debt, which is more than twice New York’s. (Virginia is $35 billion in debt.)
And then there is the criminal amount of waste and fraud.
Gov. Gavin Newsom spent $37 billion to fight homelessness only to see the number of homeless climb from 151,000 in 2019 to about 187,000 today—prompting a federal criminal investigation.
The state’s Medicaid spending nearly doubled in six years, and almost one-half of that was due to free health care given to illegal immigrants.
The state lost $20 billion in COVID-19-related federal unemployment money—the most of any state.
In 2014, California voters overwhelmingly approved a $7.5 billion water bond proposal, nearly $3 billion of which was set aside to build new reservoirs. More than a decade later, not a single new reservoir has been built.
In 2018, former Gov. Jerry Brown signed a $1 billion bill that was supposed to improve land management to “prevent catastrophic wildfires and protect Californians.” In 2019, Newsom’s wildfire “strike force” said, “Over the next five years, the state will commit over $1 billion for critical fuel-reduction projects to support prescribed fire crews, forest thinning, and other forest health projects.”
Apparently, that money was completely wasted, as anyone looking at the burned-out Palisades and Altadena neighborhoods can attest.
And just this year, the state decided to dump $282 million it doesn’t have for a special election to gerrymander its congressional districts—a completely pointless exercise that will disenfranchise California voters and have no impact on the control of Congress. And then it spent another $2 million to correct a typo in its original voter guide.
So, the question I have for every Californian is: “What is wrong with you? Why do you put up with this? Why are you content to let California be a one-party state?”
Most of your leaders should be in jail, not winning reelection.
It’s true that over the past four years, more than a million more people moved out of the state than moved in. But what about those who can’t or don’t want to leave?
Why do you keep electing the same class of criminals to steal your money?
I think part of the problem is that Californians don’t know how badly they’re getting screwed, because, while everyone knows which restaurants are worth the price, it’s not easy for average citizens to make direct comparisons between life in one state and another.
I can leave the state just as easily as I came. But most can’t pick up and move. Nor should they have to. California is a beautiful state with enormous potential. Its citizens just need to refuse to pay Wolfgang Puck prices for Hamburglar-quality service.

As a Californian, I’ve seen how much damage Newsom has done to California. I can’t imagine him being PRESIDENT OF AMERICA., It terrifies me. We went from being one of the Best states, now we have become a LAUGHING STOCK! IT’S TRULY SAD WHAT HE’S DONE
We used to live in CA because of my job assignments. We moved out as soon as possible after I retired. Orange County tried to assess the value of our personal aircraft as being based there because we bought fuel there during a three day visit. I had to prove the aircraft was based elsewhere by sending a copy of our hangar rental contract and receipts of payment.
We no longer own a plane and now have a motorhome. When we travelled to Southern CA to visit our grandson while he was at Camp Pendleton we would fuel up in AZ so we could make the round trip without buying fuel in CA.
I-5 pavement is so rough that I will not punish our motorhome driving on it. We drive it to WA via US-93 to I-84, then west to Vancouver to avoid CA.
We have always voted red, but we were not able to outnumber the welfare vote in CA.
As a 56 year resident of California, and as a business owner of 31 years, I can say that the Conservatives in CA are VERY conservative and patriotic. Where I live, they may account for 35% of the population. The other 65% are people who seem brainwashed and incapable of seeing beyond what they hear and see in the media. Their tribalism is almost cultish. I had hope, after the last election, that we were finally seeing a shift back towards the conservatism we saw in the early seventies, but the campaign for Prop 50 has killed any hope I had that CA could recover its vanishing greatness.
People in CA are crying for help. But until feds start arresting & jailing these corrupt leftist Governors, Mayors, NGOs, nothing will change. State elections are rigged so that’s only way to GET THEM OUT. WHY does the Justice Dept refuse to arrest these law-breaking insurrectionists??
Although I love to visit occasionally, I knew and understood what would happen once the Democrats took over and sure enough, CA keeps going downhill. Can’t blame the people for leaving and when businesses started feeling the pinch, they joined the exodus. Is there time to save CA? It is up to the populace to wake up to the antics but don’t hold your breath.
One can understand why both the homeless and the illegals flock to California. You never have to work or earn anything; it is all GIVEN to you by the “compassionate” DIMMs! Of course, they might want to show some compassion for the taxpayers who cannot live well on their net pay or those who are raped, robbed, and murdered by the illegal criminals from many other nations. When politicians don’t have any real competition because of gerrymandered districts, they can thumb their noses [or flip the bird] to the DECENT citizens who have to pay for all this excrement!
The Republican Party is all but dead here in California. The Democrats have a veto-proof majority in the state legislature, and a Democrat governor. Proposition 50 will probably pass, because our voters are stupid, and our Congressional delegation is likely to go down to 4 Republicans. We don’t know how many illegal aliens are voting, because proof of citizenship is not required when a person registers. Are we stupid? the writer asks. “We” includes him and me. We Republicans are mostly not stupid.
Truly a FAILED STATE. Cali-rado is following the same path to destruction. I pray that the liberal governors of both states FAIL in their efforts to become POTUS. Their records confirm that either would continue with the Obummer/Auto Pen agendas to turn our nation into a banana republic.
Same with states like Delaware and others. But they’re run into the ground by corrupt leftists & the people CAN’T GET THEM OUT!
Do Californians Realize How Badly They’re Getting Ripped Off?Yes
Do Californians keep electing and re-electing the people who are ripping them off?
Yes
New York State not to far behind
The citizens of California want what they are getting (or not) from their government, because that’s what they put in place when they vote. They also have no right to complain about the very things they put in place.
California’s elections are being stolen by fraud. Stop election fraud and California will become great again.
What is totally ridiculous is the fact that CA has the 4th largest economy in the entire world. Why is the state so dependent on Federal Tax dollars? If DJT was smart, and I am sure he is, he would change the tax structure at the state level for the state to pay into the Fed, based on their economy, or only dole out services due to the same criteria. Let the state step up to support is citizens loss of snap benefits, instead of crying about it.
I live in California because my family is here. It’s a lovely place to live, if it weren’t for the politics. I read all the comments. How it breaks my heart to read people saying that it’s our fault and too bad. I vote straight Republican in every vote. Voted against Prop 50, as did my family. But we conservatives are out voted 2 to 1. And now conservatives are leaving in droves. How will we ever catch up? What we need is your prayers, not your hateful criticism.
CA is the test state on how to bankrupt the rest of the states in the Union. You can see who the State attracts with their liberal Medicaid, unemployment payments and obstructing the current administration. Not one thing in there is for the citizens. It’s all money to go towards fighting the enemy. They are fighting themselves. CA is a large state but has many problems. From earthquake to fires. They have droughts all the time. Or downpours, which creates mudslides in the burn areas. Money for reservoirs that were never built where did it go? Nobody knows. After the fires in Jan did they come with a plan to build some? Of course not they first had to pass a multi million dollar redistricting bill. That helps no one but the party leaders. Newsom wants to run America.. Hell he couldn’t run a dog kennel unless the dogs told him what to do. Every dem state is on the verge of bankruptcy and now Schumer is working on the Federal Treasury. Trump wanted to use the tariffs income to lower the deficit. Even give the people a rebate. The dems can’t have that? Trump is empowering people and the dems just had them in their communists claws to obey them. I was so tickled when they held that Hate America Rally and all the old people they rolled out of the nursing homes didn’t want to yell the slogans the paid demonstrators were yelling for them. It was funny to watch. Some of our senior citizens didn’t know where they were or what for. It was elder abuse in the first degree. 300 million dollars wasted. Just like Newsom has wasted millions upon millions in CA. I wouldn’t live in CA. Because for the past 50 years they have fires in the summer and flooding in the spring. And nothing is ever done for the people.
The people of California know exactly what they’re doing. The really want to live in a country like the former East Germany. I left in 1974 to get away from a tyrannical government. The people there continued then and still continue to this day to vote themselves into poverty and slavery. If there is a difference between Gavin Newsom and Erich Honecker I’m darned if I can see it, other than one speaks American English and the other spoke German.
California is the Classic example of my favorite (but sad) political quotation. I will paraphrase: “It’s not important who votes…it’s only important who counts the votes.”-Stalin If California’s last election for Governor was done with hand counted paper ballots (such as in France) Larry Elder would still be the Governor of California.
LIBERAL= STUPID!
This CA native fled that fetid dump five years ago and never looked back!
Left CA for FL 41/2 years ago. Miss all the wonderful things about CA – H’wood Bowl, Griffith Park, Burbank Rose Parade Float and Library book stores, Burbank Senior Center and bridge clubs. But best friends have passed on and FL is clean and free and more affordable. Friends left in CA are outnumbered. Others will never learn.
We left a few years ago and now I won’t even visit the state.
Most Californians are too brainwashed by the Dems to realize their own situation.
I believe the voting system here in California is corrupt. An obvious indicator to the corrupt system is when people in San Diego were asked to vote on a bill that would charge them about $30 a month for trash pickup which was being done through the taxes. I don’t believe a majority would vote themselves a new tax of $30/mo for something they’re already getting for free or through tax money. We know the system is corrupt and some things make it obvious like the 17 additional days used to count the last election ballots.
This article was eye opening! We all know California has tax and spend problems along with crime and homelessness but to see it broken down like this was interesting. Yes, I know folks who have left California for job reasons that have better lives in other states. Why do the folks that remain don’t demand more accountability is astonishing or is it that too many celebrities have so much they don’t care and the others are dependent on the state? California used to be a go to destination but to be honest I don’t want to visit there until they clean up the state in all areas!
I wonder about the Dems and their “ideas” and voting patterns. Are they really really dumb or are they amoral and unable to judge right from wrong or are they just great at obeying their “leaders.” Something must explain their behavior.
Cali is RIGGED – Vote NO ON Prop 50.
When you’re dysfunctionally stupid, California is what you get.
I have been walking for No on Prop 50. I have found a large number of people no longer live where they are registered to vote. In my county, the clerk does not accept people reporting to them when people have moved.
Judicial Watch needs to continue to have counties trim their voter rolls.
Dump Newscum NOW.
I AGREE!! Unfortunately my job is here and it’s a specialty job. I need to be near the coast.
We, here in NY, know how bad we’ve being screwed, and continue to be screwed over by Hochul so, yes, I’m 100% positive Californians know it, too.
I couldn’t say how Californians reason things through.
But, just from the way that their elected officials are consistently allowed to function, seemingly waking up everyday, coming up with new things to shock and awe anyone who cares to watch especially if their actions are compelling enough to astound anyone on the Right then they’re all in regardless of the outcomes.
californicators are just dem/lib/commie/socialist lemmings….drinking the kewl aid offered by gruesome. Thinking they are getting more for the taxes they pay, since it seems the feds have been presented “legitimate bills” for the care and feeding and healthcare for the ILLEGAL INVADERS they have imported.
You can be CERTAIN that the billions California’s democrat government spends on programs is lining the democrat party’s pockets, not going for its intended purpose. Staying in power costs money.
Yes WE do those who voted to recall Governors Have Voted & NO results
IE gerrymandering & nothing done
CA Deep State vs Voters
Newscum does ZERO for CA
See the LA CA fires 1-25
Ive seen the Eaton Fire area
some signs of construction otherwise bareland.
Newscum does Zero for CA
Why vote for recall when system set up to keep him in place
HELP!! ANYONE?
I lived in UnCalifortunate for a few decades and I lived in Mexico for 2-1/2 years. It was Much better in Mexico. Worst, UnCalifortunate is just one color: gray. Gray skies, gray grass, gray trees, gray buildings, gray roads, and one gray bird.
UnCalifortunate collected and kept ALL my child support. The entire amount in arrears was approximately $130,000 collected by the state and never distributed (to me).
I got out of UnCalifortunate in 2002 (before the mass exodus) and moved to Idaho, which is like a different planet (the aliens being UnCalifortunate). I had arranged employment before leaving and while walking to work on first day, a bunny and later a squirrel crossed my path. The sky is actually blue! So many different bird songs, and colors! It is Fall now and the foliage is remarkable with tens of different shades each of gold, orange, mottled browns, blue, purple, red, various shades of green.
I bought a new home and furnished it with all new furniture soon after I moved out here. My children were much happier in school.
And Idaho is a red state! So, so nice to see your votes heard!
Newsome has Ruined The State.
Presidential Aspirations are not acceptable.
NEWSOME WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE! THAT INCLUDES MY FRIENDS!
What troubles me is how these Californians will vote when they move to a red state.
Sadly they do not. If they did they would change the way they vote.
I left CA in 2005. I shall never return to live there again. No regrets upon leaving…only relief at never returning.
Excellent article, I have a ton of family out West and they won’t or can’t move! The weather is ridiculously the most common reason I get, you know lots of sunshine and warm temps! Funny thing is that I have the same in the east!
I saw what was happening when they passed the voting law that only allowed the two highest vote getters in the primaries to run for the actual office regardless of whether they were in the same party or not. That leaves no choice for republicans to vote for, they can only vote against the worst of bad and worst (both democrats).
I left as soon as I could and I refuse to go back for ANYTHING for fear of their democrat “Nazi-esque” government.
Where I live now I have no fear of meeting a stranger and asking him/her what she’s carrying and why and compare to the firearm that I carry everywhere in my pocket. That’s called FREEDOM!
While the specifics vary this is true of all liberal run political entities. Where has all that money gone? wherever it has gone should be found and the recovered funds returned back into the state coffers. And added to through penalties enacted for the level of abuse.
Lemmings
Newsom did not do this alone, no, he had the help of all citizens that were not paying attention. I guess the voting machines may not work properly, or people are so happy with the good weather and the natural elements, that the high cost has not hit home. Just a thought. Elections have consequences, they say!
Right on brother…
Tech is supporting the state and its politicians they have enough influence to keep the Feds out as we just learned. The majority in Cal like it so the rest have to bear it or leave. Currently a free country now to do so.
californians choose to be uninformed and in the dark about the state of the state.
example : the governor, the legislature, local govt. etc.
all of which are supposed to serve the people.
if the people continue to elect the same people automatically, all of the time, and refuse to educate themselves to other possibilities, they will NEVER change CALIFORNIA!
