FIRST ON THE DAILY SIGNAL—The Department of Labor announced more than $86 million in grants for employers to provide training in high-demand and emerging industries.

President [Donald] Trump has directed the Labor Department to Make America Skilled Again by providing states with the resources they need to expand on-the-job training opportunities,” Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer said in a statement.

The department awarded grants to 14 states to accelerate innovation, strengthen domestic production, and address critical workforce needs, according to a news release shared with The Daily Signal. More than $20 million will support the revitalization of industries, including domestic shipbuilding, welding, marine electrical, and manufacturing.

This is in line with Trump’s executive orders “Preparing Americans for High-Paying Skilled Trade Jobs of the Future” and “Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance.”

“By investing more than $86 million in workforce development initiatives across the country, we are carrying out our responsibility to prepare American workers to fill the mortgage-paying jobs being created by this Administration’s efforts to revitalize American manufacturing, shipbuilding, energy production, and other critical industries,” Chavez-DeRemer said. “This is how we keep America working and winning.”

Grant applicants proposed a model to award funds to employers for training and retaining newly hired and incumbent workers in industries critical to American competitiveness.

Among the grants awarded:

The Arizona Department of Economic Security received $5 million to support advanced manufacturing; the Connecticut Department of Labor received $8 million to support advanced manufacturing, construction, distribution, logistics, and transportation, as well as health care, information technology, and shipbuilding; and the Iowa Workforce Development received $4.7 million to support advanced manufacturing.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission won $7 million to support advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence-enabling occupations supporting data centers and digital infrastructure, and construction and industrial trades; and the Maine Department of Labor was awarded $8 million to support advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defense, and shipbuilding.

Our President truly wants to “Make America Great Again”He has identified our weaknesses and is doing everything he can to strengthen them.
He is giving those who want one a hand up, to become who God created them to be not a just hand out.
Good for you Mr. President, Good for you- and Good for America

It’s a shame that so many young people are going to 4-year colleges and getting degrees in useless majors. I taught 36 years at a technical college [later renamed as a community college] and students got real employable skills at a much lower cost! We will always need plumbers, electricians, mechanics, nurses, etc.

In my industry we don’t need ‘training’. Our entire department at Siemens ICN Lake Mary, FL was ordered by corp mgmt to TRAIN our foreign replacements, Tata India employees, holders of H-1b and L-1b visas.

It was the most demoralizing time of my career. I had 3 ‘trainees’, none had near the knowledge or experience as me. They were just cheaper, cheaper for the corporations lining the pockets of congress.

The abuse has been everywhere this century. Congress doesn’t care. US citizens are being tossed out of high tech jobs for cheaper imported foreign labor.

How about home building trades like carpentry, masonry, millwork, plumbing, electrical, and so on. We need strong homes that can withstand weather of all types.
Not just high rise buildings of glass and steel that are soul- less.
And automobiles that people can fix without all computerized electric stuff that is hideous and blow up randomly.

This IS good news.

Another Nation wide area of skilled labor is transportation of large commodities such as coal, oil, manufacturing parts of all kinds, Locomotive Engineers start training however, I believe it takes about 5 years on the road (on the job training) for them to be secure and competent to operate these iron horses. It is national security and safety issue. Road bed MTCE and Locomotive MTCE are also skilled

I think what holds back a lot of people from working isn’t a lack of desire, but a lack of skill for better paying jobs.

We spent more than $2B on credits and subsidies on the foolish effort of Electric Vehicles. Why not spend at least that much on training for high skilled jobs in all manufacturing arenas?

Trump ahead of the problem. No president ever has put the horse before the cart on an issue. Especially in recent memory. Autopen did nothing but hire more Gov workers so the employment figures looked good. Trump knows we need 11 million blue collar workers, I hate that definition. Blue collar workers are the backbone of this country. Not the graduates of the elite universities. The democrats haven’t figured that out yet. Trump is in tune with the average Joe. That is why they ordered 800 generals and admirals to Meet with our Secretary of War. To tell them what the army and navy, marine, Air Force, coast guard, marines, space force is supposed to be. These generals should be happy that what came down from the top they also wanted. Had nothing to do with a dressing down it had to with empowering those in charge to make a powerful military in every branch. Not mollycoddling these troops in dresses. That’s not a fighting force that’s a tea party on the veranda. We should be so thankful for president Trump to protect us and the country. He made a lot of jokes and of course the dems didn’t get it. The same as they didn’t get why the generals were ordered to this meeting. They keep on stumbling over themselves to find a reason for that meeting. Nothing sinister democrats. Just making sure everyone is on the same page and those that can’t, can leave. Easy isn’t it. United for America what a concept!!!’

Just read. the President Trump Executive Order ” Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance “. – it is very encouraging. It is what is needed. In the good news department it is a great news report. So Elizabeth Troutman Mitchell , you did right good with writing this article It is appreciated. The maritime history of America should inspire many to get involved in the shipbuilding that is of such great importance to keeping the United States of America a free country.

When I went to high school, many of us started attending Trade School classes 3 days a week after lunch period at a different location. It was education of real life skills, like becoming an electrician, plumber, welder, etc.. At the time, a lot of people were focused on gettin g college degrees, most with good intentions. Meanwhile, the kids that went to BOCES ended up having real world skills that enabled them to have solid careers that paid very well for the rest of their lives. I used to trade my skills with my friends and neighbors when we were all younger and needed to do projects around the house. I’d do electrical work for people and they’d do tiling or carpentry for me, etc., etc.. Eventually, most of us became quite capable in most skills.

The amount should be at least 100 times $86 million. And the $100K per H1B visa that Trump is talking about, all of that money should go to scholarships for our college bound brightest that can’t afford the best schools – so they can learn how to do the jobs that the H1B folks are doing.
