Chuck Schumer Will Be the Biggest Loser of Government Shutdown

The government officially entered a shutdown at 12:01 AM Wednesday after Democrats rejected multiple offers from Republicans to keep the lights on and pass a continuing resolution (CR). While both parties are predictably pointing the finger at one another, all signs point to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ultimately being the biggest loser of this standoff.

The full story of this shutdown begins with the CR passed in March of this year which extended government funding through September 30. At the time, Schumer stated plainly his belief that “there are no winners in a government shutdown” to justify his decision to vote in favor of the CR and bring nine Senate Democrats with him.

“It’s not really a decision, it’s a Hobson’s choice,” Schumer said. “Either proceed with the bill before us or risk Donald Trump throwing America into the chaos of a shutdown. This in my view is no choice at all.”

Well, apparently it is a choice, because when faced with another CR that keeps funding at the exact same levels as Schumer just voted for six months ago, he made the opposite call. So, what changed?

This headline from Politico may provide the answer: “Poll: AOC leads Schumer in head-to-head New York primary matchup by double digits.”

Following Schumer’s March vote, he was bombarded with attacks from Democrats’ progressive flank, including from some other members of Congress. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries refused to say that he had confidence in Schumer’s continued leadership – a dodge that can only be seen as a stunning rebuke of his Senate counterpart.

Then came the calls for primary challenges, with Schumer up for re-election in 2028. Just before the funding negotiations really heated up in late September, The Hill reported that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is indeed “considering a possible challenge to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer amid frustration from a number of Democrats who say the party needs to clear the way for fresh voices.”

There should be no doubt that this insurgent threat from progressives’ most high-profile star was on the back of Schumer’s mind as he pushed the country over the brink into a shutdown this week.

Even in the final hours before government funding expired, it was obvious that Schumer still desperately wanted to cut a deal – but his fear of progressive backlash kept him in line.

As Punchbowl News reported on Monday, Schumer “floated a week-long stopgap funding bill, among other options, to his rank-and-file.” But to progressives, this showed that Schumer “was trying to wriggle out of a shutdown before it even began.” Sure enough, as soon as Schumer was asked about whether he supported such a measure, he reversed course, saying that he wouldn’t support a seven- or ten-day stopgap bill.

But as much as Schumer has bent over backward to appease the progressives who are now calling the shots, what he should have learned by now is that it will never be enough.

Eventually, enough Senate Democrats will make concessions and the government will reopen. Three already have. When that happens, the left will blame Schumer again because, as much as he may play the part, he’s not really one of them. There are too many old clips of Schumer opposing open borders and taxpayer benefits for illegal aliens, and the 74-year-old has cut too many deals with Republicans over the course of his career to pass the left’s ideological purity test. The left won’t be satisfied until a true believer – like AOC – is atop the caucus.

In the meantime, Schumer’s actions also confirm the worst suspicions of the American people – that the Democrat Party is entirely beholden to its radical left flank, and that Democrats are so desperate to give welfare to illegal aliens and hurt President Donald Trump that they are willing to send the government into a shutdown.

Schumer’s failure to stand up to the obstructionist voices in his party is also opening his own members up to criticism. Past comments from Congressional Democrats blasting government shutdowns as a “disaster,” bad for families, bad for the economy, dangerous for veterans, and unleashing “chaos” are now going viral on social media.

Those glaring instances of hypocrisy aren’t likely to sit well with the American people and are exactly the type of black eye that voters remember when they go to the ballot box. With the midterms just over a year away, a Democrat-induced shutdown is the last thing the party needed when its approval rating was already in the tank.

In the end, Schumer’s gamble won’t just damage his party – it may finish his career. By caving to the far left, he has revealed himself as a weak leader trapped by his own fear of irrelevance. Shutdowns come and go, but reputations stick. When voters and his own colleagues look back on this moment, they won’t see a principled fighter. Instead, they’ll see a man who didn’t have the courage to put country over party and common sense over personal ambition.
