President Donald Trump announced Thursday on Truth Social that he has ordered the Department of Commerce to begin work on a new census that will not count illegal aliens. This move could have major implications in future election cycles, as the census is used to determine each state’s number of U.S. House seats and electoral votes.
“I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern-day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024,” Trump wrote. “People who are in our Country illegally WILL NOT BE COUNTED IN THE CENSUS. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
There are approximately 18.6 million illegal aliens currently in the United States, according to a recent report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Many reside in deep blue states that have heavily gerrymandered U.S. House districts – meaning that Democrats have an electoral incentive to pack as many noncitizens into their state as possible. California and New York have a total of about 4.25 million illegal aliens. The average House seat represents about 761,000 people.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller stated in an interview with Fox News that 20 to 30 seats in the House belong to Democrats due to a combination of illegal aliens being counted in the census and gerrymandering.
“Let’s not forget. Democrats rigged the 2020 census by including illegal aliens,” Miller said. “Remember, they sued Donald Trump. They sued the administration. They fought tooth and nail to include illegal aliens in the census – 20 to 30 of House Democrat seats wouldn’t exist but for illegal aliens.”
As Miller alluded to, Trump attempted to exclude illegal aliens from the count during his first term, leading up to the 2020 census. On July 21, 2020, Trump signed a memorandum to “exclude from the apportionment base aliens who are not in a lawful immigration status under the Immigration and Nationality Act” for the House of Representatives.
Twenty-three states and groups that support illegal aliens sued the Trump administration to stop the memorandum. A federal court sided with the plaintiffs, and the Supreme Court declined to intervene, saying at the time that doing so was premature. As a result, the 2020 census count included illegal aliens.
Upon taking office, Joe Biden signed an executive order revoking Trump’s memorandum and officially killing the effort to remove illegal aliens from the census count.
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk explained in a post on Thursday on X that Trump’s current plan to exclude illegal aliens could lead to an early census, as the U.S. Constitution does not put a limit on how often the federal government can issue one.
“Properly counting the U.S. population would result in a delta of 15-20 more seats for Republicans,” Kirk said. “Article I of the Constitution says that the Census must be done ‘within’ every 10-year period. There is no prohibition on performing more. Redo the botched 2020 Covid Census.”

Why should Metro Cities/States that have Sanctuary Facilities get increased both State & Federal House Representation? They should not.

I understand why there is mixed opinion over this issue. However, it is extremely important to residents of deep blue states like my home state of Illinois. If you don’t live in an authoritarian, one party state like Illinois, you really don’t know what it is like to have NO voice in how you are governed. I have tried to express my voice to legislators and have literally been laughed at by those employed to take my concerns. All I can do is ask that my fellow countrymen and women be willing to accept the expense this creates, because ultimately it will benefit you.
Anyone who thinks there are only 18.6 million illegals in the US is delusional. I think we need an accurate and realistic accounting of all of them. I have read as many as 50 million. We need a DOGE-type group to do this as well. And do not allow even ONE demoncrap to be on any panel.
My opinion is that we should get an accurate count of Citizens, and if an illegal immigrant is included in the paperwork( not the count), it would make ICE’s job much easier.

Having trained participated in field work as a 2010 Census ass’t team leader and visited homes to verify or complete an unreported census form, I can respectfully tell you that many of our patriotic citizens who voluntarily sign up for the grunt work of the U.S. Census will be put at great risk by demanding to know respondents’ citizenship status.
We had workers threatened by firearms, screamed at and otherwise threatened with bodily harm, etc. I was told once that the three large pitbulls at one residence would be released unless I left immediately. And these incidents occurred in a highly conservative county in my state, some of whom were simply angry at Obama for his comments and efforts around the Census.
I don’t know what the answer to this problem is, except some perhaps some government oversight regarding estimates of undocumented persons residing in each community based upon welfare or workplace data collected. But putting our volunteer census workers at risk of harm is not the answer.

We need an Amendment to the Constitution which details explicitly who should be counted in the census and that it must be an actual count without reliance on statistical techniques.
Lacking the above Congress should try and pass such a law (which would require the Senate to avoid a filibuster).

I worked the 2010 census as an Assistant Crew Leader. We specifically were prohibited from asking the citizenship of anyone!

Up until the census of 1850 or 1860, the way people were counted and listed showed only the number of persons by age grouping and if free. After then, more information was included showing White or Black, age, where born, and more. The information listed today should include citizenship and not even legal foreign residents should count in drawing representative district maps.

When LEGAL immigration was at its peak, the 1850 through 1880 Federal Censuses included questions regarding the individual’s state or country of birth as well as that of their father and mother. The 1900 census asked about Citizenship and Naturalization. This is nothing new and should probably be on all census forms.
I sincerely believe no illegals, undocumented aliens should be removed from every census and voter rolls. Are they checking names from those deported against voter rolls? Sick of all the cheating on the elections. All illegals should be deported. Citizenship is an option only for those who came here legally, if they assimilate to our customs, learn the language and apply for citizenship.
Every inhabitant of the nation and its territories should be counted and categorized. Census-takers should all be accompanied by armed security personnel and a camera crew to record every interaction with a resident. All public media should be instructed to publicize the census-taking project and the rules of engagement for the population. No excuses for misbehavior or failing to be counted. Like everything else being corrected, it’s about time.
Illegal aliens are just that, they are not American citizens and should not be counted in a census. It’s hard enough to count American citizens with any accuracy how do you count illegal aliens who are in hiding and don’t want anyone to know where they are? Not to mention that they’re not citizens of the states they’re hiding in either. Trying to count how many people are living in America illegally would be grossly underestimated and not accurate. This would make the whole census process and report inaccurate.
