In August of 1790, President George Washington visited Rhode Island, which a few months earlier had ratified the U.S. Constitution.
Among those who welcomed the new president was the Hebrew Congregation of Rhode Island, founded in 1763. Now known as the Touro Synagogue, it is the oldest standing synagogue in the nation.
The synagogue’s representative wrote to the president, expressing gratitude that Jews in Rhode Island, in the newly formed United States of America, lived, in contrast to their co-religionists in other parts of the world, with “invaluable rights as free citizens.”
Washington wrote to the congregation, “May the Children of the stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid.”
A little more than a year later, the guarantee of religious freedom would be formally enshrined in the Constitution with the ratification of the Bill of Rights, including the First Amendment saying, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
Now, in a sad stroke of irony, the religious freedom of observant Jews is being threatened not by “other inhabitants” but by their own co-religionists.
Yeshiva University, the nation’s only orthodox Jewish university, has been sued by Yeshiva University gay students for refusing to sanction an LGBTQ club.
A New York State court ruled in favor of the students, and now Yeshiva University has been dealt another setback by the Supreme Court. The Supremes, to whom Yeshiva University appealed, refused to block the state court decision requiring that the university allow the LGBTQ club to operate.
The position of Yeshiva University is clear. The Torah — the five books of Moses — explicitly prohibits homosexual behavior. To officially accept the LGBTQ club as part of the university would be to negate and undermine the very mission and identity of the university.
Religious freedom is an integral part of American identity.
Historically, religious persecution came from those of other religions.
But today we have a new phenomenon.
The threat to religion is not coming from those who worship other gods. The threat is coming from those who worship no god and refuse to accept Christians and Jews to practice their religion as taught in their scripture.
An interview with one of the gay students makes clear what is happening. She challenges that Judaism actually prohibits homosexuality.
But the prohibition in the Torah is absolutely clear and explicit.
To accept her and her argument is to ask that Yeshiva University negate its very existence.
How did Yeshiva University get to this situation? As I googled for background information on this story, it became clear that the issue with gays on the campus at Yeshiva University has been going on for years.
The LGBTQ club that now seeks official sanction has been operating informally.
Can it be that Yeshiva University has been not clear and aggressive enough on where they stand on this issue, and this lack of clarity has led to this destructive situation?
I think it is time for religious organizations to stop being intimidated by threats from those whose real agenda is to destroy what they stand for.
Certainly, America must stand strong as a free society. Anyone should be able to live as they choose.
But Americans of faith should be proud and clear about the precepts of their religion and aggressively push back against those who use the headline of tolerance as a pretext to undermine and destroy the precepts of scripture.
Let’s wake up that religious freedom means nothing if religion means nothing.
We are already seeing our nation implode as our sacred principles so essential to life go out the window. Those who still live by these principles should stand strong and unbending toward those who want to destroy them.

Nothing is new with the religious situation. God’s agenda is continuing to be replaced with man’s agenda. The courts continue to forget what God’s word says. There are churches in the country that are no longer preaching the true word but whatever is needed to maintain their own agendas. JUDGEMENT IS COMING SOON !!!
Anyone who lives long enough to see results will find following the example of Jesus Christ is the best plan for life.
The people attacking religion freedom are not believers in no god at all. The believe in a totalitarian government, or they believe in “Mother Earth”, or one god other than the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Only Ayn Rand and those who share her philosophy are genuine atheists.
The second amendment can protect the first. The people denying freedoms in this country deserve some severe physical pain or maiming, something they will remember for a long time

I have worshipped at the Church of Satan for my whole life and was always taught that religious freedom in America is beautiful and sacred. The First Amendment protects us all and we all have a strong interest in preserving it. Thank you and Ave Satanas!
Yeshiva University has the right to deny any organization that they do not want at University. I hope that judge throws this law suit out.
It would have been helpful for the author to include links to the PDF of the court decision This sounds like the same situation as was faced by religious organizations regarding health care coverage and individuals employed by those organizations suing to have certain medications or procedures covered. I think their right to exclude certain medications or procedures was also denied.
Religions are man’s creations of how different people wish to express their beliefs in the Universe being of an intelligent design. There is only that belief, or not. Religions are merely ways of perceiving that belief. A rose is a rose.
This on the surface has the appearance of 2 freedoms in conflict. There is a freedom for LGBTQ to live a life they choose and a freedom in religion. But not really.. There are other freedoms: to go to this university or not, to be gay or not.
I am not Jewish, but it looks that one of the differences between orthodox Jews and other branches of the Jewish faith is their belief in the Torah and its position on gays. To force them to believe otherwise would change the religious principles, it would no longer be orthodox. For the Government to mandate this change is exactly what the 1st Amendment says it cannot do. Just like the Government cannot go into a gay organization and mandate they must all be atheists because some religious zealots throw gays off of rooftops.
The Left always gets freedoms totally backwards and are destroying ours. Freedom is not to force others to be subservient to you or anybody else and their ideology, but to allow others to practice theirs.
Maybe a little more tolerance and less hate.
