Americans, Including Former Anti-gun Activists, Discover an Urge to Own Guns, Sparking a Rush at Gun Shops

WASHINGTON, DC, July 28 — The surging unrest sweeping the country by mobs of seemingly mindless protestors and rioters, encouraged by progressive socialist insurgents, has triggered a boom in gun sales. First-time gun buyers lead the pack, and some of the most unlikely former anti-gun advocates are behind the rush to arm themselves.

It’s reported that in the month of January alone, gun buys soared by 2.3 million sales. As Los Angeles city councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson put it: “Americans are in an arms race with themselves. There was just as much a run on guns as on toilet paper in the beginning of the pandemic.”

Newsmax tells us that “firearms sales in the past year reached the highest level in half a century, federal background checks show, and 40% of those sales were to first-time gun buyers.”

In an interview with the Washington Post, lifelong Democrat Shakima Thomas said she bought an AR-15 last year and then purchased a handgun because “the world was in an apocalypse.”

She added: “I never felt like I would want to own a gun because of the damage I thought they do to people, but when I started feeling unsafe, all of that changed,” she told the Post.

National Public Radio [NPR] identified the gun buyers as “white, Black, Asian and Latino and come from all political beliefs. And they’re being driven by uncertainty, fear, and a need to feel safe.”

According to one gun shop owner, most of his sales have been for handguns, including semi-automatic pistols.

Seemingly ignoring the growing lawless gun violence in the nation and the desire of law-abiding Americans to protect themselves, President Biden still calls for an outright ban on guns, all guns. During an appearance on CNN last week, he declared: “The idea you need a weapon that can have the ability to fire 20, 30, 40, 50, 120 shots from that weapon, whether it’s a, whether it’s a 9mm pistol or whether it’s a rifle, is ridiculous. I’m continuing to push to eliminate the sale of those things, but I’m not likely to get that done in the near term.”

Unless he’s prepared to seek upending the Constitution by getting rid of the Second Amendment, that won’t happen. Rather it is more likely that there will be an increase in calls for universal background checks and new gun control legislation.

As for stricter gun control measures, the Washington Policy Center points out that “real-world experience shows that adding more gun control does not reduce violent crime. Washington, D.C. has some of the nation’s most restrictive gun control laws, and one of the worst violent crime rates in the country. Britain, Australia, and Canada have all imposed sweeping gun laws in recent years, and violent crime rates have increased dramatically in each country.”

Limiting the ability for citizens to buy guns is a non-starter for a variety of reasons.

First and foremost is the fact that gun control laws don’t reduce violent crime. Do people really believe that criminals will give up their guns because of a law? They will laugh and believe they will have an increasingly “target-rich” environment.

But, perhaps, “an alternative to gun control—mandatory sentences for persons who commit crimes with firearms—will produce greater reductions in crime and require less sacrifice on the part of gun owners than gun‐control laws.”

Meanwhile, it should be noted that you are 21.5 times more likely to die as the result of heart disease (9,691,733 deaths); 18.7 times more likely due to malignant tumors (8,458,868 deaths); and 2.4 times more likely to die from diabetes or 2.3 times more likely to die of Alzheimer’s (1,080,298 and 1,053,207 respectively) than to die from a firearm (whether by accident, homicide, or suicide), according to the Centers for Disease Control [CDC].

Additional evidence that laws regarding gun ownership are futile is contained in a scholarly critique of the rationale for gun control that shows many of the reasons cited for the need of more onerous regulation of firearms are deceptive. One of the deceptive criteria cited is the notion that “homicides are largely ‘crimes of passion committed by otherwise law‐abiding citizens not distinguishable from other people. Therefore, control must be directed at all gun owners rather than select criminal subgroups.”

Other state-based research has demonstrated that gun control laws do not impact gun homicides and other gun-related violence. The state of California has had a comprehensive background check law on the books for 10 years. Researchers at UC Davis School of Medicine have studied gun violence in CA during that period and found there was no change in the number of gun homicides or gun suicides. The researchers use the term “comprehensive background check” instead of a universal background check. And another study by the same authors found that the repeal of comprehensive background check laws in Tennessee and Indiana had no effect on gun homicides or suicide rates in either state.

Being a Lifelong supporter of the second Amendment. I’m very happy that Americans are finally waking up and arming themselves. It amazes me that former Anti gun activist Democrat Shakima Thomas bought an AR-15 a year ago and a handgun because in her words “the world was in an apocalypse” and she realized her life might be on the line. I find it hard to believe that Ms Thomas has really given up the anti gun movement. Time will tell!!! Just remember – the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!!

The Washington Post reporter clearly doesn’t understand the purpose of a firearm as evidenced by her statement of “I never felt like I would want to own a gun because of the damage I thought they do to people, but when I started feeling unsafe, all of that changed.” A firearm is a tool to defend oneself from an imminent physical threat, nothing more. A gun doesn’t do damage on its own as this reporter seems to believe. The person who wields the weapon for illegal purposes is what causes the damage she speaks of. She needs to learn that distinction before anything else. My sense is she hasn’t. Hopefully she takes the necessary safety courses to use her weapons responsibly. Otherwise, a whiny liberal now armed with a firearm she thinks somehow operates independently from herself is as apt to be a danger to other people as any ordinary criminal wielding a gun.

I have two Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs) As a life long Collector and Gunsmith I grew up with them. I am a Vietnam Veteran and fiercely Patriotic.
The Second Amendment is THE Priority Amendment as it Protects ALL of the other Rights afforded to Americans.
Our Freedoms and Rights are under constant assault by Democrat/Socialists wanting Our republic to FAIL. We The People ARE angry and have had about as much of this as we can take. Crime is rampant as planned by the left and Americans ARE arming themselves for protection against this wave of violence. Also consider the storm of ANGER on the horizon shadowing the future of Our Great Nation. Patriots are willing to take a stand to defend Our Republic.
We The People WILL prevail by including the use of …The Right to Keep and Bear Arms!!!!

The death rates quoted above are health related deaths. Crime related deaths are from people misbehaving. Health related deaths have absolutely no connection to crime related deaths. WHY are people misbehaving??? Because nowadays they can get away with it. Now ask yourself WHY?

That makes sense because the country’s best gun salesmen is Joebama and his daddy Obama and aren’t they supposed to be anti-gun?

Here is my thought , as soon as you can, ( today is not to soon) go get a gun of your choosing, stick with a popular caliber ( Handgun: 9mm, 380auto 38special, 357 mag. 45acp,
45 colt, 44 mag. ) get the biggest one you can handle effectively that fits your hand. ( Rifle:
.223 / 5.56, 30/30, .308 , 30.06,) again get the biggest one you can handle for your size and Wt.
( Shotguns: stick with 20 Ga. or 12 Ga.) get the style and type i.e. Doubles, Pump, Semi-auto.
Always get a gun that you can handle effectively, don’t let someone pick a gun for you, read about the types and operation and have someone explain the pitfalls of each.
Every time you see ammunition buy a box or two and stock up you need about a 1000 round on hand if things go badly.
Join a local shooting range or gun club, and practice, practice, practice.
You may think that you would never fight in battle, but, you will need to defend you home.
They will always make the the calibers and gauges that I stated about they are either Military or have been around for over a hundred years and they will always make them.
Save the brass !!!!!!!!!!

It is safe to presume that The Commiecrats in their ignorance EXPECT We The People will just roll over and play dead? Give up our Constitutional RIGHT to Keep and Bear Arms? In favor of Tyranny? This is NOT pre Weimar Republic Germany giving in to the NAZIS. Old “Puss For Brains” does NOT have the logistics nor authority to do any of this. Our family members serving in the Military will NOT turn on the American people regardless of what Puss for Brains demands! It is NOT a Lawful Order and NOT required for our family members to take up arms against American Citizens… their friends and family that they took an OATH to DEFEND! AGAINST DOMESTIC ENEMIES!

The old adage of, “It is better to HAVE a gun and NOY need it…. than NEED a gun and NOT have one!” Certainly applies to this fiasco in government control!

True article. My wife has never been a big gun advocate. But in the last few years, she has taken her concealed-carry class and she now owns a shotgun, a rifle, and two handguns. That’s in addition to what I have. Never threatened anyone in her life and intends to go to her grave never having done so, but she is now prepared to defend herself, our home, and our property if need be and she would! She sees what is happening in our nation and refuses to be a helpless victim.

I have a Tee-shirt that encapsulates the principle behind the 2nd Amendment and the desire to be able to protect yourself perfectly. It reads, “The 2nd Amendment was never intended to guarantee your safety; it was intended to guarantee your ability to fight back.”

It is a wonder, how desperation can rob people of their fear. The actual problem would be in these newly minted firearm owners. Will they support the Second Amendment (2A) or roll back into their anti ways when the fear returns? I have witnessed too many with the idea that now they own it they can keep it secret and it will not be taken away. Which can only work if the 2A remains unfiltered. They fail to see that having to “use” the weapon would make it public and subject to all the various laws they had circumvented while hiding it. This could be a result of the liberal elitist philosophy so prevalent in today’s Democrat Party.

We dont need more laws. The law needs to be enforced we have now. As for Felns it has been against the law just to get caught with one round in their pocket. When’s the last time you heard about a crimnal being sent to prison ,for having a round in his pocket ???

I just bought a gun for my living room door. It is too bad that I cannot post a picture of it. It is mounted on a tripod and fed with belted 30 caliber ammunition.
In 1776 We The people stood up to the most powerful military in the World! Bravely and fearlessly We The People answered their Tyranny and Control with Muskets, bayonets and cannon fire! WE WON! They tried again 1812 and AGAIN We The People kicked them OUT of Our Republic!
