Winter of Our Discontent? No, Resolve!

winter“This is the winter of our discontent,” drawn from Shakespeare’s Richard III, was used 60 years ago by Steinbeck to express brooding forces preying on good people – fear, cowardice, loss of conscience, loss of hope. Looking at our listless national leaders, lost moral anchor, lack of focus on history – never mind literature – one is tempted wallow in “our winter of discontent.” Do not.

Yes, the 2020 election was a COVID-afflicted disaster, ideologically and insufferably negative.  Yes, we are a divided nation.  Yes, vaccines are slow, Biden bumbling and feckless, his policies on Iran, China, debt, censorship, rights – reckless. But think hard about the moment.

First, too much is at stake for conservatives to give up.  In our hearts, we know this.  Core freedoms are at risk – the right to express our opinions, hold our faith, work, assemble, attend school, petition for grievances, limit government’s reach, truthfully teach, protect our family, restore national solvency, and honor border sanctity. These are not small matters.

We also know our Nation’s character – distinguished by never giving up.  History teaches: Never count Americans out where freedom is concerned.  From 1776 to Tranquility Base, Americans resolve to do things – and do them.

Yes, we sometimes lose. We lost bitter battles on the way to freedom, in places like Bunker Hill, Quebec, Long Island, Kip’s Bay – a hundred engagements over seven years – until the British empire surrendered at Yorktown.

In WWII, defeats at Kasserine Pass and Dieppe preceded Normandy, Pearl Harbor preceded Doolittle’s raid, and Pacific losses preceded Midway and Iwo Jima – triumphs for freedom.

Nor do we shy from the battle of ideas. America’s love of freedom has prevailed against “utopian socialists” and “international Marxism,” Trotskyites in the 1920s, European fascism, “authoritarian socialism,” communist “fellow travelers,” and violent radicalism in the 1960s, along with Soviet Communism, which Reagan relegated to “the dust heap of history.”  In each case, Americans routed enemies for freedom – decisively.

How? Individual and national resolve, exercising rights to protect them, and embracing risk, secure in the knowledge that free Americans, working together, are unstoppable. So, today’s stakes are high, but history says we will prevail if we know our past and apply it.

Second, the best victory is conversion. What is conversion but persuasion in the service of truth?  We all have the power – those who know why rights matter – to speak at school board meetings, town councils, city halls, public hearings, with state legislators, petitioning, joining organizations like AMAC – unifying behind one mission.  One pebble tips a scale, one wave turns a tide, one voice that stands, explains, and refuses to hide – can change everything.

Ronald Reagan was disparaged until understood and revered. Winston Churchill, while prescient, was derided for warning about Hitler’s “national socialism” and later Soviet Communism. Reagan and Churchill stood their ground, glad for the chance. They teach us now. They suffered political critics but won the day.

Churchill famously quipped that “Success is the art of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” Reagan never doubted freedom’s call, America’s destiny, or the power of simple truth, plainly spoken, courageously defended to convert.  If they believed, shouldn’t we?

Whether battling Democratic socialism, Chinese communism, High Tech monopolies, media prejudice, cancel culture, anti-religious or anti-Second Amendment sentiment, their resolve should be ours.  Behind conservatism is the power of history, truth, and persuasion.  These tools we should wield with confidence, not doubt.

The power of one well-informed mind and stout heart to restart a conversation is real. Once upon a time, no one thought Britain could stand down the Nazis, or Reagan the Soviets. Both did, or free peoples did, persuaded by their belief. This is the conviction Lady Liberty needs today.

Third, persuasive victories are won by inches, incrementally.  Epiphanies are rare, around a family table, at a congressional hearing, or in the voting booth.  Good people must speak, offer sound arguments, make plain what others do not see.  In time, experience comes around and meets doubters. Socialism, like unemployment, is theoretical until the fingers of restriction, lost rights, debt, taxation, and aggravation curl into a fist – around the individual. Then it is real.

Fourth, envision good outcomes.  In practical terms, we can envision the US House and Senate flipping in 2022, new administration in 2024.  We can envision convincing moderates to hold fast, not letting radical ideas pass.  We can envision being over COVID, retaking governorships, preventing future lockdowns.  All good, but what about right now?

In the near term, we must envision lockdowns lifted – work for that outcome, businesses reopened, kids in school, teachers responsible to parents not unions, politicians regaled with facts, recalled if appropriate, social media abandoned, boycotted, entanglements unknotted, new venues created, citizens newly appreciated. We must hoist the flag of accountability.

All this we can do before 2022, long before 2024. We have in our power the ability to shape the next two years. We must use that power – which starts with not accepting “this is the winter of our discontent.”  Yes, easier said than done. But doing produces energy, as ambivalence drains it.  We must lean forward, conservatives who care, starting now.

Funny how history teaches. In truth, although Richard III is controversial, the line is often misunderstood. His speech offers hope, not despair. War has ended, his brother ascended, “glorious summer” before them – and “our stern alarms changed to merry meetings.” And Steinbeck’s character, who loses hope, gains wisdom in the end.  So, let us resolve to “merry meetings” and new wisdom – along the way more hope, less fear.

While I concur with your points, how can we ordinary citizens work to take back our government? I contacted a senator, who will remain unnamed, but one who is pushing for conservatives to take back the government and asked what an 80 year old could do to help. His answer was to contact my senators. I had plainly told him that my senators Kaine and Warner are died in the wool democrats and would not help conservatives. So just how do we help, especially when we are this age and disabled?

Is there a Constitutional mechanism for a national referendum to demand Congressional term limits? If so, what are the steps? If not, what is left that we can accomplish given the makeup of our representatives?

All great thoughts! However, if we do not focus on balancing the budget, we will go bankrupt! And if we do, we will be owned by our lenders such as China! So we dearly have to focus on frivilous spending, giving money to other Countries, global warming since orher Countries are not helping toward that presently, and use our funds to lower our debt!If we don’t, all thease great thoughts will go down the drain, and our Country will will go down with it!!!! First things first!!!

The “Winter of our discontent” was made “glorious summer by this son of……”
If you caught the APAC convention and Mr Trump’s speech you can complete the quote “made glorious by…”
He is back.
Look to 2022

I will not give up, but a good deal has changed from times past. Both sides of the aisle loved America although they had very different philosophies on what the government’s role in Americans’ lives should be. The vast majority on the left side of the aisle now deeply despises this country and conservatives while constantly reminding us of that very thing. The left reeks with hypocrisy. They talk about “unity” while doing everything that they can, constitutionally or not, to attack, cancel and silence conservatives.
The camel’s nose has been under the tent for years. Now…if H.R.1 and S.1 pass, and are signed into law, more than the camel’s nose will be in the tent. Conservatives are going to get “humped”…if you get my drift. We have a tough row to hoe, and if the tyrannical left gets their way, that row is going to be made of rebar reinforced concrete. That will be the time to drop the hoe and pick up a jackhammer.

We went from America First under President Trump to NOW AMERICA LAST under Jackass Joe Biden! …I’m afraid that now that the Progressively Communist Democrats have learned to successfully “STEAL” this past election, Republicans will NEVER AGAIN WIN THE PRESIDENCY!!! Not as long as these Commies hold the Governorships of these same 5-6 “swing states”! The Red States, led by Texas and Florida, must unify and threaten Secession and fight being forced to obey the destructive laws being forced upon them. Start with Texas SHUTTING DOWN their border with Mexico! Ramping up oil production and distributing it to fellow Red States only. Whatever is NECESSARY TO STOP the Communists from destroying America!

Lots of nice ideas in this article but…. the barn door is open and the chance of putting
the horse back in is small. The whimps who run the GOP failed to challenge the unscrupulous
tactics used by the dems. I believe free and fair elections will not happen again, until patriots
are willing to fight for them. The price for freedom is never free. Talk is cheap actions,
speak louder than words, and patriots will have to speak up. But we can hope, words will
prevail.

The GOP must get started removing the wrinkles from the voting process! It’s the most sacred & revered policy in the United States and always has been up until the 2020 election. Local authorities took it upon themselves to change voting policies when no one gave them that right! Up until 2020 we had Election Day! Today we have “Election Days” which, in some cases extended a whole week! That was the period where much of the illegal counting took place.

An observation from CPAC people after Trump’s speech. The people all had a demeanor of joy and hope, dancing and enjoying each other, even though the enemy is in control of congress and the presidency, Contrast that to the how the democrats express hatred towards conservative Trump supporters, They truly are miserable, despite getting what they want. How pathetic they are, and how blessed we are to not be under control of a life of so much hatred. Christians are indwelled with the Holy Spirit enjoying the fruit of the Spirit “Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self-control, against such things there is no law.” Galatians6 6:22&23..

We must correct the practices at the ballot box and the voter rolls. Each American citizen gets one vote and all are counted equally. Voting should not involve the internet or foreign agents.
If we don’t make the elections fair, than the same immoral, corrupt politicians remain in office.

If we’re to do anything as a conservative majority in a representative republic then our reps must DO SOMETHING. The silent majority is silenced more by our own representatives than by liberal bias and outrage. They talk, talk, talk but they do not a damn thing. Since 2000 the vocal Republican majority has sat by and watched one expensive “rice bowl”(a reference to the Viet Nam era) program after another forced upon the people. Now we live under the shadow of $25 trillion debt.
If the GOP wants on going success then rise up from your asses and produce something.

May I suggest something that I recently did and now I get all the good news of what our representative of our state is doing in congress. I first located who our representative is and then asked to be put on his newsletters which tells what he is doing in our state or what “the other side
is doing in our state” and the battles he has taken on. I can also encourage him via the newsletter. Our representatives need to hear from us and let them know we care and he is getting to the people of his state. Of course he is a Republican, yah!!!!! Otherwise vote the “other” out!!!!

The first thing that needs to be corrected is voter integrity. Until that has been done, nothing will change. Trump won the election but due to fraud and the fact that the Supreme Court as well as others, refused to intervene, we are allowing the demo/communists to take over. This should NEVER be allowed!!!

Great article, reminding us to keep our resolve and push forward. Too many want to give up. Losing a battle is NOT losing the war! We have to make our voices heard, loud and clear. Some say complaining to your Representatives and Senators is useless because Democrats have the majorities. I disagree, and feel that the louder we speak the more they will listen, they have to if they want to be re-elected. When those in government hear enough voices in decent, they DO listen, they are afraid not to. The same action is called for when we are being censored and silenced by Big Tech and the media. If we make our voices loud enough they can’t ignore us. So speak out, louder and louder, until it hurts their ears.

Dominion voting machines and their ‘adjustable’ algorithms at the top of the 2020 election FACTORS. Next are the communist ‘educated’ college kids. The politically unaware known as ( I ) independent voters next on the list. Fraudulent “mail-in” voting to be penciled in on that list of factors in the 2020 election. I know 4 people who were mailed 3 mail-in ballots EACH ! !

What are we doing about the election process coming up in 2 years. We already know Democrats are bringing in masses of illegal immigrants. They are being brought in to swing the next election of course. The election coming up is a serious priority.

Why doesn’t he mention AMERICA’S ‘STOLEN ELECTION?
Is it because after our entire government turned their backs on us and not even the Republican’s like Mitch McConnell lied about the facts of the January 6th Capital incident, which was NOT INVESTIGATED BECAUSE OUR DOJ AND FBI ARE ALSO CORRUPT, AND DECIDED TO TWIST THE ACTIONS OF THE PRESIDENT INTO SAYING BECAUSE HE WANTED US TO HAVE A VOICE ABOUT CIVILITY AND ABIDING BY OUR CONSTITUTIONAL LAWS, TO JUST BLAME TRUMP FOR TELLING US TO GO TO THE CAPITAL PEACEFULLY!!!!
So now because that’s just the way it is, and everybody thinks we need to just lay down and take it??
THAT IS TREASON AGAINST THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!!!!!!

Sugar coating what our cheating government did is not going to catapult us to the front of the line of demanding accountability! Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden admitted to the world they were going to cheat in the election, just not in so many words. No, what needs to be looked at is how over the years the Cabal has been moving towards their goal of destroying this country. How long ago did it start, and with whom? The dumbing down of our culture began, I think just after JFK was murdered back in November of 1963. Things began to unravel with all the conspiracies surrounding his death. Some think it began back in 1871 when some conspiracy theorists say the Congress changed just one word in our Constitution to ‘of The United States,’ instead of for The United States’ allowing Congress to establish DC as part of The United States which somehow gave them the authority to become Landlords and not have to answer to the people…AND which these conspiracy theorists say DC is not really part of the U.S.. Like DC is on foreign soil. I don’t know whether to believe any of that, but it’s quite intriguing to say the least. I recall in the 70’s anti-american organizations like the ALCU, feminists and Anarchist groups were becoming sympathetic to whiners who didn’t like seeing the Ten Commandments and the Cross, which everyone knows is symbolic of Christ’s sacrifice for the world, not wanted to be seen in government institutions and on Public lands. The demoralizing of our country was now becoming visual to the world in removing God from as much of our ‘public’ lives as possible. Now it’s a blatant attack on our personal freedom of religion as Christian’s.
If our freedoms as American Citizens and elections are no longer relevant, how do we make our government accountable when ‘every aspect’ of it is corrupt including our last effort of a chance to claim truthfulness with the SCOTUS??? Does anyone have an answer for that?

This a very uplifting article. We need hope after the last year of darkness. As the days grow longer and the sun is brighter, may this bring out the good in all of us. Now is the time to look ahead start listening to those that what to be are leaders. Sort the ones out that are not sincere in their true objective. We need good honest men and women that really love this country. Not just wanting power and money, like so many in today’s world. I have voiced my opinion through the past years, not saying that I was always right, but I do care especially about the little guy and gal. WE make this great nation what it is, without us getting up and working hard all of our lives this country would not have survived. To see what Washington is trying to do makes me sick. Stand tall stay in touch with what’s going on around you, and always take a second to remember why America is the greatest country in the world. Because people like you and people like me have fought hard all our life’s to Keep America great. I thank God for this day, and those to come. We The People will overcome this time in history. Thanks

Thanks for great article. WWII was won by a patriotic “Greatest Generation” , the sacrifices of USA families, and smart use & rationing of Natural Resources. The Government was adept at bringing the troops home, creating jobs, GI loans , etc. to make America great again. The biggest issue to me is that this country was united & not divided. Will the current generations be as strong as this group?
I hope that people realize how important it is for US to be energy independent, not depend on govt. to give them free stuff, & accept future election results? A divided country is not good.
