Having worked in Ronald Reagan’s White House and sat with him after Washington, the notion that anyone could recapture his guileless personality, epic role in history, leadership style, optimism, good humor, and moral compass seems impossible. Dennis Quaid, as Reagan in the movie, comes close. The movie is worth watching – as biography, history, and entertainment.
Reading the negative reviews of “Reagan” written by those not alive when Reagan led America, and America led the world, is like hearing someone describe ice cream, cotton candy, bearnaise sauce, or effervescent water – having never experienced it. Many critics were boldly anti-Christian.
Of course, negative reviews had no effect on me. I was curious how Hollywood might treat the Gipper, in a time of anti-American hubris, rewrites of history, leftism all the rage, and a modern plague.
Look around and you see arrogance and ignorance in vogue, from history and office holding to journalism, and politics preloading keyboards with hate. Knowledge and reflection – interviews and experience – are no longer needed by “reporters” who google, assume, and opine, like producers.
If one never knew Reagan, did not live through his history, knew nothing of how he led, and … feared the movie might boost Trump, what would you do? Pan it. The media did. I went anyway.
Truth is, I was pleasantly surprised because so much of what was presented held to facts, hard as that is. The movie presents Reagan much as he was – authentic, earnest, cheerfully corny, at times genuinely funny, faithful, and a man of heart, idealistic yet clear-eyed on evil, humble but firm.
“Reagan,” the movie, condenses 70 years of this good man’s life – and great leader’s finest hours – into poignant moments and decisions, retold by a grudging Soviet intelligence officer, and – one sense – admirer. Reality, as my life intersected this time, is close to what the movie suggests.
The movie progresses from young Reagan’s rough and faith-centered upbringing through his early adulthood, watches the Cold War refocus the world after WWII, and then tracks Reagan’s growth into a leader. It does not try – as many movies do – to push fake wrongs or sully his clear-eyed view of evil.
The movie showcases an uncommon idea, destiny – Reagan’s and America’s. It implies the Soviets saw Reagan as a threat long before he rose to power. Why? He had their number. He made hard choices based on faith in God, clear values, and the American people. The “movie Reagan” never falters, which irks all the lefty reviewers. Truth is, the real Reagan never faltered either.
In reality, the real Reagan led confidently during a period of profound economic and security turmoil. He resolutely disposed of fear and appeasement, a refreshing change from Nixon’s détente – convergence with communism – and Carter’s resignation or “malaise,” collective handwringing.
While the real Reagan called America a beacon to the world, he was himself a beacon, recognized as such by the Pope, Margaret Thatcher, and the American people – who gave him 49 states in 1984.
With faith, constancy, certitude in God’s goodness, and appreciation for freedom, his convictions were refreshing; they have stood the test of time. He had a lightness of heart which comes to those who listen for and act on conscience. This too irks the leftists, who practice not listening.
In the end, this movie was more than a retelling of facts when we need to hear them, more than a win by good actors, more than a shaft of light from our past – helping us again find good leaders.
The movie is a historical marker, a way of understanding ourselves as a reflection of Reagan, even as he understood himself as a reflection of us. The movie reminds us – or should – that America, like Reagan, is different, idealistic, grounded in faith, the last beachhead of freedom. We were that in Reagan’s time, and we are still today. We just have to realize what that means.
To put the movie’s message in the words of a Frenchman who studied us in 1835, Alex de Tocqueville, we are different from all the nations that have ever been. Why? The movie’s message is why. It is not just about Reagan, but about us, who we Americans are at our best.
Wrote de Tocqueville, 145 years before Reagan sat in the Whtie House, “Americans are exceptional,” they have faith in goodness, believe and work for it, and never give up. “Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because America is good…” Then he added, “…and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”
What is the Reagan movie about? It is actually about our goodness and resolve to see hard things through, based on faith. We were this in Washington’s time, in Reagan’s time, and – if you scratch the surface of most Americans – still are today. That is the message. Live it or lose it.
Robert Charles is a former Assistant Secretary of State under Colin Powell, former Reagan and Bush 41 White House staffer, attorney, and naval intelligence officer (USNR). He wrote “Narcotics and Terrorism” (2003), “Eagles and Evergreens” (2018), and is National Spokesman for AMAC.
Can’t wait to see the movie! Just loved Pres Reagan! My first time voting and voting for a president. My mom followed me by voting for him. I loved how firm he was with other countries and how proud I was to be an American!
I’m about to turn 72. I feel that Reagan may have been the best President this country has had in my lifetime.
RBC
Excellent tie-in with the quote from Alex de Tocqueville.
I seriously doubt that today’s college student has ever heard of him.
Great article on a wonderful movie that did in fact portrayed Pres. Reagan very well.
Have a great Maine weekend.
Knowledge of the accomplishments of President Ronald Reagan are needed , should be remembered because he did positive, good things that helped this Country. This is an appropriate time to have this film presented ,it sounds as if it could have a great influence on the thinking of many people in order to, well, just think right. Knowing who Ronald Reagan was brings to mind the story he told about an experience he had campaigning for President the first time , in rural Texas , after he had been Governor of California ,He went to the door of a farmhouse and and said he running for President — the farmer did not recognize him and Reagan just said that he had been an actor before going into politics and his initials were RR — at that point the farmer called out ” Ma, come here quick it’s Roy Rogers at the door ! “. The Alex de Tocqueville quote is good . Something about the time this movie is being presented — it is very good now before the election Far better to be ahead than too late. What General Douglas Mac Arthur said is appropriate “The history of failure in war can almost always be summed up with two words – Too Late – to late to comprehend the deadly purpose of a potential enemy, too late to realize the mortal danger, too late for preparedness, too late in uniting all possible forces for resistance.”. The lessons from the history of achievements during the Reagan Presidency will be a great achievement. Well done RBC , this article is appreciated.

Dennis Quaid, is a patriot, and President Reagen is one of the two best Presidents in my lifetime, I got to meet President Reagen when he was running for office and no one came close to living up to his standard until President Trump, Trump has a different style, but his love for America is equal to that of Reagen. You would have thought that all of the others would have tried to live up to President Reagen, but they showed that they were more interested in padding their pockets and being war mongers to achieve that goal.
God Bless America!
God Bless President Trump
My President Reagen rest in Peace, and long be remembered!
Great article, RBC, about a great man and the greatest president in my lifetime. Trump comes close. I’m 78, and I miss the patriotic spirit, the “Era of Good Feeling”, if I may use that expression, the patriotic songs, such as “I’m Proud to be an American” by Lee Greenwood, that were pervasive during the Reagan years. We don’t seem to have this much anymore. I can understand why a lot of young people don’t have a knowledge of the Reagan years, but I don’t understand how people of my generation have forgotten what a great and patriotic experience that was.
A very good article. I hardly listen to critics anymore. Left wing BS.
I feel that Reagan was the best President of my lifetime, as he knew the dangers of allowing liberalism to dismantle our free, democratic (in the actual sense) republic that so many great Americans built and defended through the years. He took seriously the honor of defending it, protecting our allies, and holding those unions sacred.
Trump is infinitely more “wild and wooly” than Reagan, and not the “statesman” that Reagan was, but, he also loves America, and cares about all of the recent inequities (millions of illegals, rampant crime with no plan to bring it under control, no current motive or plan to ensure our energy independence, our world economic status, preservation of our strategic oil reserve, our defense readiness, and, especially, the lack of integrity of our current national leadership.
I’ll vote for Trump any day over the wretched and dishonest governance we’ve received since the flawed, 2020 vote count… and will never forget Reagan.
I saw the movie on the night BEFORE it premiered. EXCELLENT. Shows why RR believed what he did; loving, Christian mother. Father was alcoholic. RR closely studied communism and opposed it starting when he was president of SAG. He was not like some of today’s pols who think communism is harmless! Quaid, Voight, and Miller really were tops!
Beautifully said. Best review I’ve read of the movie.
Amen.. Reagan is like Walter Cronkite.. Truth and honesty and respect amongst all the nations and people. Oh for there to be people who do their own thinking… I say never again .. This era is an all about me and what I say the truth is.. No that it really is…
They talk about Trump being a dictator and controlling the nation.. Who was the one that was “PUT IN BIDENS PLACE” to run for President without one single citizen voting on it.. Now you tell me how that is not any different than Castro or Putin or the Shah??
At least, people get to vote for or against Trump and he was chosen by the citizens
I was a guide at the Reagan Home in Dixon, Il. for several years. I started at about the same time he passed away. I remember the literal crowds of people, waiting in long lines, just to walk through this great man’s home. This article, well-written, echoes what most felt as they walked in the same rooms he walked in…as they touched the quilt on his bed, as they sat in his favorite chair. I still remember the goosebumps I felt as I guided folks through the home. I wonder if those in leadership today will ever evoke the same reverence and respect this man did. I highly doubt it.
I loved the Reagon movie. I learned a lot of history
Looks like this is out in theaters. I’ll wait for it to go to streaming. Look forward to seeing and hearing a great communicator who spoke from the heart AND the head without a teleprompter….unlike what we have today
Just saw this movie yesterday. It was fabulous! It brought a tear to my eye at the end. I was in my early 20s when he became president and wasn’t really paying too much attention because I was distracted. But I do remember the good he brought to this country. And I do remember him demanding to tear down the wall! That was incredible. His love story with Nancy was beautiful.
Saw the movie and could have sat for another watch. It was fabulous! He nailed Reagan and the facts were right on. I have told everyone I know that they should go see it. I am proud to have voted for him!
At 72 I recall watching movies with Ronald Reagan. Then president of the United States of America.
My wife and I haven’t been to a movie in years but had said we would love to see this movie about Ronald Reagan the president
Now we must find a place near us showing it and get of our ass and go.
zThank you for reminding me
When is the movie to be out. ??? Kyle L.
Not a fan of docu-movies; I like action movies more so I’m waiting for the Tim Walz war movie instead. Sounds like it could be another “Saving Private Ryan”!
