This iconic image was not of “soldiers” but of “United States Marines” Broccoli Free Zone 1 year ago There was a Colonel (USAAC/USAF later) that was a shipmate of my dad for a time. He was on submarine duty that went into Tokyo Bay, around May ’45, and was loaded with 12 the first of the sound seeking torpedoes. They would surface at night for fresh air, fire 2 torpedoes then back to the bottom. 2 ships sunk each night for 5 nights. The last night they fired the last 2, and unfortunately the only thing making sound was their own sub. After being “rescued” he became a guest of the Emperor. Definitely a lousy host, but the Colonel was thankful that he only lost one eye. Their camp was right under the flight path of “Bocks Car” carrying the Nagasaki bomb. His crew felt the earth shake before they heard the distant rumbling boom. John Bass 1 year ago 10/10 Wow, that doesn’t happen very often. Joearcher 1 year ago You got 10 out of 10!
