What is China doing? First, they declare the goal of world dominance, then ramp up military spending, ICBM deployments, militarize artificial islands, test space weapons, a hypersonic weapon, swamp Hong Kong, threaten Taiwan, spread a deadly virus, lie about that, manipulate world trade, traffic fentanyl, and create Western reliance. Now what?
China’s latest move is edging toward control of food production by buying up and dominating farmland. This is not just a passing fancy, something the West can ignore. The issue is key.
Facts are arresting, yet one hears nothing from Congress or Biden on this. Beyond seeking to monopolize the production of semiconductors, supply chains, and minerals, China is creating a reliance on the food supply. How?
China’s overseas direct investment in “food-producing acreage” has grown tenfold in ten years. By 2020, China had amassed 35.2 million acres, 2.7 percent of US farmland. China’s food-producing acreage grew an average of 2.3 million acres per year since 2015, even as China bought food producers in America’s Heartland. As the Chinese-origin pandemic has raged and meat availability in the US hit snags, China shipped US production of pork to China, away from the US. Is that a big deal? In one sense, no, in another absolutely. It signals a new vulnerability – a national security issue.
Experts say, even as China gobbles up food production globally, the issue is not imminent but foreboding. Chinese food control is not yet a threat, but that could change. We are dependent on many areas, such as pharmaceuticals. Food could be the next chokepoint.
Today, China controls 191,652 acres of US farmland, worth over $1.8 billion. Legislation is being lofted to reduce US dependence on China for our food, but China is on a tear. See, e.g., China is Coming for American Farms | Opinion.
One bill would bar businesses owned by the Chinese government from buying US farmland and participating in USDA programs. Bipartisan, it cleared the House in 2021, part of the funding for USDA. The main point is this. The tiger’s stripes do not change, nor do China’s intentions. They vector to security, creating a threat to the security of others, now even food security. A reason to panic? No. Reason to stay vigilant – and focused on – Communist China’s actions and intentions? Yes.

You can’t “monopolize the production of semiconductors, supply chains, and minerals” (The Japanese tried this in the 80’s, lost their ass, and gave the US pretty much market dominance for Intel because ALL of Japans R&D was going to “monopolize” the equivalent of the buggy whip market of low end computer chips. Along with that it gave Americans incredibly cheap tech so it spread throughout our economy, faster than it normally should have, and made us more productive, faster than it normally should have. I only HOPE China dominates those markets just as Japan did! 0.0 ). Once they start trying to raise prices competitors come in. Even if there are literally non when they start to raise prices there is ALWAYS someone willing to move in (Just look at the restaurant business for example).

This is a stupid article, dishonest as it gets. The “facts are arresting” is not at all what the author claimed. Less then 1% of US farmland is owned by ANY foreign interest. China ranks #18 on that list of foreign owners.

Much like there was no rational reason to allow China to be part of the WTO back in 1999, given the obvious potential threats most people in government and many in the private sector at the time recognized, there was certainly no rational reason to allow China to acquire a significant portion of American farmland, currently at 2.7 percent and rising, as well as participate in USDA programs funded by the American taxpayer. We have both seen how China has leveraged its Belt and Road Initiative to gain a foothold and then exert significant political and economic influence on the governments of target countries around the world since 2013. It has worked out great for China of course as they have greatly expanded their global influence, but it has been a total disaster for the people whose leaders fell for China’s pitch.
It would be foolish to NOT expect China would seek to leverage their growing ownership of American farmland over the United States in some meaningful way. At some point, when they have acquired a significant enough percentage of land, China’s tone will turn from being a somewhat cooperative economic competitor (hope you got the joke there) to demanding and likely getting a more direct role in our political decisions. While that may seem far fetched given how dependent we already have allowed ourselves to become on China over the last 30 years, we have both seen how China treats countries truly under their thumb. It is what the CCP has consistently done with all their dealings with the western world at nearly every turn. It would be foolish to ignore such recent history on the matter and think we are somehow immune, if we are foolish enough to allow things to progress to that stage.
So while there is a bill currently sitting in the Senate awaiting a vote that would make a good start at addressing this specific problem related to China (not sure Biden would sign anything that would rein in China though should in land on his desk), we as a country are instead mired in trying to fight off the continuing efforts of America’s Socialist Party to transform this country into something that would be much more reflective of the CCP’s China than the United States as founded via the so-called BBB and sarcastically named Voting Rights bills.
After this COVID 19 disaster it appears that the CCP has taken giant steps forward in global dominance. I have never liked the idea of foreign ownership of any, ANY land, company, or asset in our country. Some of the acreage China bought in Texas is being filled with solar panels. No doubt they plan to sell the power to US. I think they have their own landing strip. When solar panels reach the end of their usefulness (like light bulbs and batteries) those old panels become garbage. They can’t be accepted in landfills–especially “green new dealer ” landfills.
