Discovering new hobbies for senior men

Being older does not preclude people from having fun. There is joy to be found in spending time with like-minded people who share similar interests.  Since senior men often have a harder time discovering new hobbies on their own, joining group activities provides a wonderful way to meet new people, acquire or expand skills, and remain active and engaged. Read on to discover three fabulous hobbies for senior men.

It’s never too late to learn and enjoy these and other fun activities:

  • Join a chess team: Playing chess is an inexpensive hobby which requires strategy, planning, and decision making. It is great for the brain. Not only does it improve cognitive skills and memory, but it is also known to elevate creativity. In one study, researchers at a school in India compared two groups of students. One, trained in chess, the other, not. Students who played chess scored higher on tests. Research concluded that chess increased the ability to “exercise divergent and creative thinking.”
  • Take nature photography classes: Taking a photography class or joining a photography club is a great way to meet new people, learn the craft, and spark creativity and imagination. Many people enjoy taking nature photos because it affords them time outdoors where they are surrounded by beauty. Whether one is photographing a lily pad on a pond, an eagle soaring in the sky, a mountain steeped in mist, or a sunset on the beach, taking photos captures and shares special sceneries and unforgettable moments in time. It also serves to preserve memories.
  • Enjoy day hiking in groups: When people talk about hiking, day hiking is quite popular. There are various other types to include backpacking, glacier hiking, base camping, and more. Day hiking simply refers to hiking outings done in daylight, whereas the other types of hiking may occur at night and for prolonged periods. Day hikes typically range anywhere from 2 to 12 hours long. Trips may be tailored to meet one’s ability and hike difficulties can vary greatly depending upon independent factors such as elevation and altitude, terrain, weather conditions, hiking abilities and more. Hiking in groups is fun. Not only does it provide safety in numbers, but it is an excellent way to see nature and keep fit.

Bottom line: Do what you enjoy!

The whole point of having hobbies is to have fun! Thus, it’s important to do what you like. While some people prefer alone time, most people enjoy group hobbies where people can share ideas, support one another, and build healthy relationships. Hobbies effectively reduce stress in individuals and provide them with pleasurable ways to pass the time. And it’s never too late to pick up a new hobby.
