Has America Lost a Culture War – to a Bunny?

On February 6, two days before the Super Bowl, The New York Times published a column by culture critic Noah Shachtman titled, “The Culture War Is Over – Bad Bunny Won.” It’s a remarkable claim given that most Americans – or at least most over the age of 25 – had likely never heard of “Bad Bunny” before this year’s big game.

The occasion for Shachtman’s announcement was the selection of popular Puerto Rican singer Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, performing under the stage name “Bad Bunny,” to provide the halftime entertainment. Aside from his habit of grabbing his crotch during performances and incorporating plenty of explicit language and derogatory terms for women in his music, Bad Bunny is known for performing entirely in Spanish.

That last fact, for Shachtman, demonstrated that “English is no longer [American] culture’s lingua franca, or at least not the only one.” As further evidence, Shachtman reported that “a third of American pop music fans listen to music in Spanish,” and “nearly two-thirds listen to artists from other countries.” He noted in particular the popularity in the U.S. (and elsewhere) of K-Pop, which originated in South Korea.

While I’m a devoted football fan, it’s my longtime practice to hit the “mute” button during halftime shows as well as during commercials (so I can use the time to read). Out of curiosity, however, I paused my reading to look at the show and turn on the sound just in time to notice two aspects of the Bunny’s act.

One was, as promised, the crotch-grabbing. The other aspect was aural. At first, my heart warmed to his singing “God Bless America.” Then, however, seeing the American flag followed by the flags of other (probably all) central and South American countries, I realized the point: Bunny wasn’t calling on God to bless this country. Rather, he was defining “America” to include all the countries of the Western Hemisphere, with presumably no hierarchy among them.

As two other Times contributors subsequently noted, Bunny’s usage elaborated the meaning of his proclamation, upon receiving a Grammy award, that “We are Americans.” As the contributors, both of them American academics with Hispanic names, put it, Bunny “wasn’t merely referring to citizenship” [which all Puerto Ricans enjoy], but “was challenging this country’s ever-narrowing definitions of who is – and who is not – American.”

Needless to say, the authors provide not a shred of evidence for that proposition, and the very selection of Bunny would seem to refute it. Rather, I am compelled to conclude, what they actually object to is the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. This is hardly a “narrowing” of the dominant understanding of citizenship prior to the Obama and Biden administrations. What country is there that does not limit its official definition to those who are legal residents?

Notably, in Bunny’s own home of Puerto Rico, there are growing anxieties about “outsiders” coming in and buying up property. Bunny himself has spoken out against this alleged “gentrification.” He apparently does see the conflict between this position and opposing the legitimate enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.

But there was a deeper political meaning to Bunny’s act, as he indicated in a pre-game press conference in which he explained, “English is not my first language. But it’s OK, it’s not America’s first language either.” However, as New York Post columnist Rich Lowry pointed out, while “Bad Bunny’s first language, Spanish, was a colonial imposition in the Western Hemisphere beginning in 1492,” if the rapper had “wanted to associate himself with languages prior to this wave of European settlement, he’d have to sing in, say, Nahuatl or Algonquian.”

(Of course, I will add, there’s no reason to assume that those were the first languages spoken in the hemisphere either.) But as Lowry explains, while the majority of original settlers of North America spoke English, founded “enduring institutions of representative government, and made English the most important and widely spoken language in the world,” the fact that their descendants came to call their country “America” “is an affront to elements in Latin America and on the left,” who suddenly “consider it insulting to everyone else living” in the hemisphere not to be called “Americans” as well.

If the practice of setting legal limits to immigration, or of continuing to call our citizens “Americans,” is a sign of a culture war (an ominous term having roots in Prussian Chancellor Otto von Bismarck’s seven-year battle with the Catholic Church over control of education in Germany [1871-78]), it certainly wasn’t the U.S. government, or the vast majority of its citizens, who launched it.

Fortunately, following the forecast of James Madison in Federalist no. 10, the “multiplicity of [religious] sects,” as well as the various countries from which immigrants to this country arrived starting in the 17th century, combined with our system of constitutional government, saved us from the sort of interreligious battles that long characterized life in Europe. And the very fact that Americans have welcomed immigrants from many lands, and enjoyed their respective “cultures” (artistic, literary, musical) signifies that aside from some extremists on both Left and Right, there is no obstacle to cultural or ethnic tolerance in today’s America.

But a caveat must be added here. While the United States is inherently a “creedal” nation, based (as Abraham Lincoln argued) on our common dedication to the principles of the Declaration of Independence, its continuance depends as well on a shared, proud loyalty to the country’s history – despite its blemishes (such as no country lacks).

When children are taught that history is a shameful one (as in The New York Times’s phony “1619 Project,” now in use in some 4,500 schools), their willingness to uphold and defend it as adults is weakened. (See most recently, on the overall problem, Benjamin Ginsberg and Dorothea Israel Wilson, The Unmaking of American Citizenship: How Americans Learned Not to Love Their Country and What Can Be Done About It.) Nor will their commitment to their country’s defense and prosperity mean much if they feel no more attachment to it than they do to other “American” countries like Paraguay, Peru, or Mexico.

I will add that while having American youngsters learn foreign languages, as well as acquire an appreciation of artistic culture from around the world, is highly desirable, there is one practice, adopted in the name of tolerance or multiculturalism several decades ago, that weakens the practice of civic assimilation and hence a politics of toleration: the adoption of bilingual ballots (or in some places ballots with many languages) in our elections.

Not requiring voters to have a demonstrated knowledge of English sufficient to enable them to learn about the qualities and programs of rival candidates is a recipe for undermining civic unity. It means that, in areas with (most commonly, Spanish-speaking) voters who lack that degree of political literacy, candidates have an incentive not to tailor their program or their rhetoric to a broad swath of voters, but rather to focus only on promising gains to their fellow non-English-fluent citizens. When elected, such representatives are likely to pose more extreme demands on their colleagues (so as practically to guarantee their own re-election) rather than be prepared to compromise.

Only through a positive civic education, and an insistence on the capacity to understand our shared language, can America live up to its national motto: e pluribus unum.

As I recall from my years in school learning US History and Civics/Government, one of the requirements for immigrants was that they assimilate which included learning English. English is our primary language and we need to stop catering to those who refuse to learn it. Other countries have a primary language, but fortunately they learn English as a second language because Americans are not well versed in other languages. When an American goes to another country as a visitor or tourist, they are accommodated, but if they move there, they are expected to learn the language.
“Bad Bunny” was an insult to the American culture and people. Fortunately the majority of the people who watched the halftime Super Bowl show had no idea what was being said and were enjoying the visual presentation. Had they understood the words (later some was translated and published), most would have been very offended and children would not have been allowed to listen. We need clean and patriotic entertainment, not filth and negativity at an American event.

Maybe if we pressed 1 for English we could understand his depravity. But ultimately it’s the NFL that allowed this to be spoon fed to a not so captive audience. Wake up Americans, just because you can’t understand filth doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Not surprising. Americans just sit back, allowing our culture to change without resistance as the Left continues to gain momentum to erase this country’s heritage. At this rate, it is not too long before its disappearance as we know it occurs. And no one will realize that it has happened.

Another lost soul and tool of satan. “The iniquities of the wicked ensnares him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin.” Proverbs 5:22 Pray that God will soften their hearts and that they will turn to him for salvation, and away from evil.

Just yesterday I attended a ballet. Over the sound system the announcer gave a brief description of the ballet in English then gave the same description in Spanish. It irritates me to be an American citizen to have to hear everything in both languages. This is the USA and our language is English. It was just another change in our society that highlights the reason many are not embracing immigrants now. Seems none of them wants to assimilate to be a great U.S. citizen, they want to come here and change our country into whatever dis-functioning, crime -riddled country they left. What they are too stupid to understand is that the reason our country was and still is (barely) a country of Constitutional law and Capitalism is because of born citizens and past immigrants valued our way of life. The conservatives want to keep it that way and it cannot happen if we keep bringing in people who do not share our values and will not learn our language. As for Bad Bunny, he is disrespectful of his country and making millions doing it. Disgusting.

Whoever decided to use bad bunny for the halftime show shows just how stupid and out of touch they are. And the NFL going along with it shows how stupid they are.

We are losing America or the United States of America. The democrats with the progressive don’t live in this country. They hate this country. While one man is trying hard to save her. President Trump with JD Vance and the Cabinet. But people like Bad Bunny which 90% of the population never heard of. Never would follow his vulgar act. The Super Bowl half time show was an in your face to the patriots who love America and try to keep her and make her better. All these protesters that want America to disappear into a global communist country. They won’t be happy till they have destroyed the constitution and put their mandates in its place. People think. This country is the most freedom loving constitutional country in the world. Even many European countries don’t have many of the freedoms we enjoy here. Most of all cussing out the president and calling him names. There is no respect coming from the left. Not for the President nor for their neighbors and family members who think different from them. They want to kill us all. Ice agents are in their plan to be eliminated. And MAGA supporters. They would love to see all of us killed. But with this Spanish half time show they also alienated the blacks and Asians and not to forget our native people. It was a big faux pas no matter what the New York Times said. The propaganda outlet for the left.

Hypocrisy thy name is Democrat! Just like the party which REQUIRES photo ID to attend their conventions but REFUSES to make photo ID required for voting in an election! PRs don’t want “foreigners” invading their “country,” but Sick Bunny wants foreigners invading OUR country!

I only saw Bad Bunny performing little bits and pieces on Fox News. What an embarrassment. Who ever picked this person and his dancers (?) should be FIRED FROM HIS JOB. What a disgrace to the Americans who watched this trashy performance. If I was at the Super Bowl, I would have left and never to go again.

I was such a fan of football, even before Arizona had an NFL football team (they still don’t) … I went to at least two pro games per year, as an underpaid, peon. Meaning I left the state, to another state that had professional football, to watch a game live, (usually bringing my son.).

That is until the NFL stepped in and told the Dallas Cowboys, they couldn’t wear a patch of 5 stars, to honor the deaths of 5 ambushed police officers. The started allowing taking a knee, further ingrained my hatred of the NFL … plus half time shows, honoring Malcolm X.

When Arizona got a pro team (kinda), they were supposed to have a Super Bowl … at the time when Arizona was voting to decide on whether to honor Martin Luther King, with a paid holiday for mostly government employees, who in my opinion don’t work enough anyhow.

The vote was done, No Martin Luther King paid holiday for government employees, so the NFL pulled the Super Bowl. Looking at lost revenue, local businesses, forced another vote, and amazingly the paid holiday came to pass … and the NFL allowed Arizona to host a SuperBowl. Early proof of fraud in the vote in Arizona?

The NFL sucked the life from football, so Bad Bunny, was just another example of the NFL doing what they do best … making enemies of the fans of football … and cause their American viewers, to decrease, year after year …. Maybe soccer is too popular in this country, making the NFL think they have to appeal to the world to stay relevant. So maybe that is the plan, to what end I don’t know … maybe make male naked leap frog an Olympic sport?

I guess when Bad Bunny was grabbing his crotch, he was doing a package check to see if his stuff was still there.

True story: Just before Christmas 2024, my wife and I had lunch at a McDonalds when we walked in they were playing Spanish music. We sat down and they brought us our food. At this point I made a comment to the server that I thought I was eating at McDonalds not TACO BELL. She stared at me, said nothing and in less then a minute Christmas music was playing. I even got a thumbs up from another customer. By the way, I did not watch the Superbowl and still say F*CK the NFL and Bad Bunny!!!

For whatever reason, real or fake, this B$ has taken over. The country has gone/is going to $h*t and the younger folks seem to be OK with it all. I am an old phart already, and I will not be here to PERSONALLY watch as Russia/China/Islam or whomever finally takes over our fat, dumb and happy nation, but it will happen. Fewer folks in the military, because our younger people are too fat/lazy/selfish/or able to get off their a$$ to join (look at the foreign military folks. Not a scrap of fat there).

Pretty sure no military force on Earth will care about the ‘Pronoun of the Day” when they come to take over….

From the lead caption….exactly what did Bad Bunny Win? How vulgar and anti-USA he is?
If that is the case, I would define the outcome as he did not grow an increase in his audience when he insults the country he accepted the invite to display his ?talent?
The people that approved of his show will remain in his fan base. I don’t think he won new followers with his “exhibition”!

As for using original language, how far back do we go? Every civilization has a very long history of conquest. That causes changes in language and culture. Most US citizens do not want these changes, but they may be inevitable, regrettably.

When I was in 8th grade we had to learn the U.S. Constitution and pass a test to graduate. Then in 1976 during the bicentennial of our great nation the TV and Newspapers were flooded with stories of our great nation. That boosted my patriotism immensely. I realized what a great nation we were and how I wanted to keep it that way for my future kids and grandkids. Now I have not just kids and grandkids but great grandkids and they are no longer taught in schools the true history of our nation. They don’t possess the pride that we had. In talking to the younger generation about our history, they have no idea the things we as a nation have done to make this world a better place. They haven’t been taught history. We have failed our children! We have allowed the democrats to run our schools and poison the minds of the children to hate our nation and this is what it has come to. Bad Bunny giving us the middle finger and telling us we are not exceptional, we belong to anyone that wants to come and take us. God help our country!

I refuse to push a BUTTON on the phone to have the recorded person on the other end to speak ENGLISH – that should be the only language preferred. It IS our official language now and ALL should be required to learn it. I am just glad that I was born in a land that speaks it as I would rather not have to learn it as a second language, since it is a difficult one to master.
