“I need six months of vacation, twice a year.” The author of this witty comment is unknown, though a year-long vacation is appealing albeit rarely practical. Instead, let’s set realistic expectations. Domestic travel offers that – affordable, shorter, and manageable getaways. Below are six must-see American destinations for your travel list.
Why Domestic Travel?
Domestic travel lets you avoid costly and lengthy international trips where language and culture challenges exist. Instead, you can enjoy America’s highlights without overseas expenses, long flights, adapting to new languages, exchanging money, or being concerned about safety or medical emergencies in a foreign land. Domestic travel is high among life’s most inspiring pleasures. Exploring local towns, cities, and landmarks provides opportunities for enriching and memorable experiences close to home.

My brother was the one who told me that I have to see the Grand Canyon because, pictures of it are not adequate. In the fall of 2024 my husband and I flew out to Flagstaff, Arizona. We went to a near by town, and took the fun, and informative, train ride up to the canyon, and went on the bus tour. My brother was right. At first I was just struck by how vast is this canyon we call grand. The next thought I had was that settlers who wandered into that giant maze would surely be lost. Then I was impressed by the varied colors displayed in the formations. I could have spent hours just staring and taking in the details, but we had to get back to the train.
We also saw the Meteor Crater, Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, and Walnut Canyon, all within driving distance of Flagstaff. If you go, don’t forget to stay hydrated. It was one of the best trips we’ve ever had.
Niagara Falls not listed?
I live in AZ and have been to the Grand Canyon at least 5 times. It is truly awesome to see even if it is your 5th time. That area is full of other historic and beautiful areas to see. Flagstaff is a bustling small city with many fun shops and restaurants to try and the Santa Fe RR runs right through town. There are tons of hiking trails nearby and early settlers sites to explore. There is a planetarium as well. So glad I moved here in 1998!
I took a trip to AZ back in 2001 and took the train from Williams into the Grand Canyon Park and then the bus along the southern ridge. Wow! What a magnificent creation! I was breathless at the size and depth and truly believe this is one of God’s best sculptures! Going to Sedona to see the red rocks and the Chapel in the Rock was another AZ pleasure! Then Tuscon’s Desert Museum was amazing! First time I had ever seen a live coyote and a road runner! The cactus and desert flowers were so vivid and everything about AZ helped me fall in love with the state. Definitely a state to visit!
