If you have a condition like diabetes, not filling your prescriptions can have fatal consequences. Medication coverage helps reduce overall drug costs and ensures that individuals have access to essential medications. Luckily, Medicare beneficiaries have options when it comes to obtaining prescription drug coverage.
When you sign up for Original Medicare, you receive Part A and Part B, which covers hospital and outpatient medical services. However, neither of these will cover prescriptions you pick up at a pharmacy.
Medicare does cover prescriptions through Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) or Part D (stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan).
Part D is a stand-alone prescription drug plan that solely covers prescriptions. Someone may go with Part D if they keep Original Medicare since it does not cover drugs.
Part C is a Medicare Advantage plan which replaces Original Medicare to offer hospital and medical insurance under one plan. These plans can also offer prescription drug coverage (Part D) as well.
Before committing to a plan, be sure to consider all your options. Drug coverage can vary by plan, carrier, and location. Furthermore, formularies (list of covered drugs), costs and pharmacy networks are also different from plan to plan.
