coronavirus covid conversationWhen it comes to planning for mom and dad’s transition into a senior community, many choose to stick their head in the sand. It is simply uncomfortable. It is human nature to let guilt and logistics dominate as obstacles to a rational discussion. We put it off. Covid-19 has been devastating but one silver lining is that it seems to have forced families to take planning more seriously and have “the conversation”.

Following a brief six-week dip in activity between March and April, our senior transition activity has fully rebounded and now exceeds pre-pandemic levels. Cancelations have declined by 20% because families realize that they need to have the discussion and a plan, even if a transition is not expected for a year or longer. Trends indicate that in-home care is up and there are staffing shortages. Many of our senior living partners are full and seeing their community wait lists grow. This all tells me that families are no longer putting things off. Studies show that the most successful transitions are those that are planned ahead and made before a health crisis forces the issue. Covid-19 appears to be forcing the conversation and subsequent actions. That can only be positive.

Quote: “Following a brief six-week dip in activity between March and April, our senior transition activity has fully rebounded and now exceeds pre-pandemic levels.” So people are trying to inherit early by killing their parents?? Quote: “ Eleven percent of people killed by the virus died in nursing homes or long-term-care centers, but the facilities are linked to many more COVID-19 fatalities — more than 54,000, or 43 percent.”
