work week

The 5-day workweek was standardized in 1938 but dates back further. Yet the nature of work has changed. Factories now employ only 9% of Americans. With which do you most agree?

The Government, namely the Democrats, have pushed for a welfare state for decades, where they supply a monetary amount to individuals not to work. This has given way to a socialistic mindset that destroys people from working. The Biden. administration wants you to think they care about you but they do not care. Working and making something of your god given talents are not in their mindset. They want to control every aspect of your life. I am 78 years old and recently retired after 57 years, and worked. 55-60 hour weeks and enjoyed every minute. The current generation wants everything for nothing, sits on their butt and let the government pay them. Our nation is a mess and unless we vote these idiots out we will continue to decline. Come on America, show some class and get off your a__.

The key word is work, this country should be more focused on manufacturing and self sustaining our needs as a country. The work week will work out if there was desire to have a stronger America. There is no work ethics.

What has changed in America’s is our “work ethic.” God instituted work with creation, prior to the Fall. Genesis 2:15 states, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”

Throughout the Old Testament, God gave the Israelites specific instructions about how to do their work. He also gave instructions about providing for those who had less: “When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest.  Leave them for the poor and the alien.  I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 23:22) This command confirms the importance of work. God does not tell the people to harvest everything and then simply give food to the poor. Instead, He tells them to leave enough of the grain to allow the poor to work for themselves.  Work has a way of giving us a sense of purpose, productivity, and dignity.

America has slowly but surely brought more of the Marxist mentality into all aspects of our society, including work. And under the current administration, our work ethic is sinking faster than the Titanic. Of the able-bodied Americans (not counting retired, military, students, and those raising children at home) over 37% have voluntarily dropped out of the workforce, and have chosen a life of idleness. Of course, they are enticed to do so because the left encourages slothfulness with handouts, which feeds their entitlement mentality. And to make things worse, our wide-open borders have added well-over six million under-skilled illegals to jump on an even-better gravy train!

King Solomon even gave advice confirming a strong work ethic, with a warning about slackness in Ecclesiastes 9:10 “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your strength. For there is no work or planning or learning or wisdom in the place of the dead where you are going.”

On another note, we often comment that we need prayer for our nation and its leaders. To help meet that objective, as well as contribute to a worthy organization, Tunnel 2 Towers, I invite you to check out my third book, which is a daily devotional for 2024 (because we’re gonna need lots of prayer!

It is titled, “We the People – Daily Devotional for Loving God & Country!”  It (along with my other two books about our national condition) is available where on-line books are sold. Again, proceeds for all my books go to Tunnel 2 Towers!

It would make a nice Christmas gift so others can join us in prayer. Think of the power of all of us being on the same prayer each day of 2024!

Let’s face facts, production of physical goods which has declined in the USA – – is because we have high labor and also now very high energy costs. A few years back, you may recall – production came back to the USA because our energy costs where very cheap. Yes, High labor can be offset by low cost energy. Both labor and energy are the major costs of producing tangible products. Wake up America – we are shooting ourselves in the foot and being sold a bill of off spec theories/dogma.

It’s concerning that American workers seem to want everything buy don’t want to earn it.
This is a societal problem brought about by what too many perceive as free.
Don’t be fooled by political BS, EVERY dollar come from taxpayers, and ALL these ridiculous union contracts, government giveaways, billions for illegals and other countries, comes out of We the Peoples pockets, NOWHERE ELSE!
Is the socialist doctrine, take from the hardworking earners, give it to those seeking handouts.
Don’t buy into it. BAD for America!
It’s the marxist democrat party LIE!

I’m a retired Baby-Boomer ( 77 yrs. old ) and I’ve worked at many jobs during my working years ( ALL blue-collar ) and my wife & I are not wealthy, but we live a comfortable lifestyle.
I can easily understand why our country is going down the toilet, the younger generation, is trained to get “ENTITLEMENTS” and protest instead of working. Little do they know, THEY will be the demise of America as WE knew it. Sometimes, I’m glad OUR generation is close to the end of our time on earth, I really don’t want to see the America I love, become another failed nation.

The work ethics demonstrated by the past couple generations when compared to the preceding generations of Americans is pathetic. I fear the indoctrination of our youth by the radical left in our education system has undermined our Republic.

We’ve already made it near impossible to manufacture anything in this country. Companies aren’t in business to fund people’s leisure time – they’re in business to make money – who are we kidding? Terrible idea in the light of reality.

Mass deportations of Illegal Immigrants and regulatory changes that will encourage US companies to return their factories to US soil will bring back jobs to US citizens. Individual companies can decide on the best format for their workers, whether it be factories with 3 shifts and a 5-day work week, or two shifts over a 6-day work week, or something else for factories, offices, retail stores, etc.
Take power away from the government where it isn’t performing efficiently, morally, or honestly, and put the power back into the hands of citizens to decide the best course of action for their circumstances. The majority of citizens will achieve better results than the minority of politicians supposedly representing them.

The Bible gives the directive to work 6 days and rest on the Sabbath. Work was what God created man to do even in the garden when all was perfect and without sin.
Man’s desire to have more “leisure time” for self pleasure goes against what God instituted in His Word.

Only 9% of Americans work in our factories? Are the rest illegal aliens? Isn’t that illegal? Or, do factories seek out people to recruit and bring to America on work visas? More context on this poll question would be appreciated.

I have a friend who worked for a company where the requirement was 40 hours per week. He worked 10 hour days M-T, was off F-M, worked 4 days, and was of Sa and Su, so every other weekend was a four day weekend. The point was to get the work done.
The problem today is that management will keep loading on the work to a breaking point. When I left my last night Corporate job, I wasn’t replaced. There were two of us doing the work, which often required long hours and weekends. All of it was dumped on her.

Now if you’d get rid of daylight savings time that’d be great.
Back on topic. With schools they have indeed changed, for the worse. There needs to be 100% tax voucher that transitions to a zero property taxes. Get the kids out of the Marxist indoctrination camps and home school them. Then as you get rid of the property taxes the parents will have the money to homeschool or send them to private school.

People want to be feely touchy.
We need to remember that the economy and the success of the economy is driven by productivity.
In the past couple years productivity has decreased for the first time in a hundred years. This is very bad for the economy as evidenced by inflation. You hear terms like “minimal Monday”, silent quitting, work from home, etc. All this is intended to destroy our economic base.
Work has an inherent benefit and reflects self worth in tangible ways that are good for body and soul.
Work hard, work proud.

I think a 5-day work week is fine, really makes you appreciate the weekends!
But after 35 years of punching or scanning into a time clock systems with disciplinary if you were more than 3 minutes late more than 3 times in a six-month period, I was very happy to move into a salary position where if you are late a half hour you work a half hour later and no big deal.
Now whenever I see some one driving like a maniac during morning rush, I figure the poor devil is on his last late, and is going to get written up!
I wish more work places where scheduling permits, and the work is one shift not over lapping on others where it would be a problem, would relax their needlessly stringent time and attendance policy and take a bit of stress out of worker’s commutes where many things can go wrong!

I worked a 4 day/10 hour schedule for several years and loved it. Not only does it give you a 3 day weekend it reduces your commuting time and expense by 20%. Another big plus is having a weekday instead of a crowded Saturday to shop and take care of business.

I was never for “globalization” to start with. That being said I am for the 4 day work week. Maybe a day off for parents would lead to better discipline at home, because we failed them working long hours. I’m not talking about 4- 8 hour days, but 4 -10’s. 4 days gas money saved for those that are struggling per month. What we really need is to boot these socialists ASAP. Trump had us on the right course, now we are in Obamas 3rd term. I am on fixed income, have little money left each month. I stay home mostly because I can’t afford it. maybe it’s not alot but it’s preventing me from putting my money back into the local economy because food prices are RIDICULOUS. With Biden trying to start WW3,none of this may matter

The focus needs to change to better education at a lower cost and on mental health care. Mental health is a huge issue – it has led to homelessness and drug abuse and crime. It’s time we wake up and care for people in a more himane manner – and we pay people much better in this field. Our country is going to hell and the world is burning – it’s time to stop the political mess, get the government in line with the constitution and the people and fix what they have broken.

It is encouraging to see so many of the comments under this article supporting the idea of working to get ahead and to provide for yourself and your family. Having free time is important, but having too much free time leads many people to develop bad and destructive habits, get into trouble like drinking too much gambling, etc. Just look at the trouble caused by people who are not working.

If nobody’s working, nothing’s getting done. A standardized work schedule is necessary for most people for a few reasons. Us humans aren’t especially adept at discipline and if we aren’t given an exact schedule, we will get lax about work, etc. Also, if we have a standard schedule, we can go from Utah to Kentucky or Texas or Michigan and not completely upset our lives, our bodies, our minds by having to adjust… It’s healthier. Now, this is not to say that different industries don’t have different requirements that make it more convenient or even necessary to have a differing schedule. I wouldn’t expect a farmer to keep an 8 hour day, 5 day week. A construction worker could, and should, be on a 8 hour day, 5 day week with overtime as “necessary” and only with agreement. These are just examples but you get the drift. Americans are killing their own economy by being greedy. We’ve gotten the “entitled” attitude over the last few decades, and we have to draw the line eventually. We want exorbitant wages and benefits but don’t want to pay more than the minimum for goods and services. It will eventually implode at the rate we’re going. IMHO

My brother worked a later shift at his job, which he preferred. He was VERY good at his job and didn’t need to be ‘watched over’ by his boss. As far as school goes, I think they should be open year-round. No reason for anyone to have 3 months off in the summer, and several weeks during the year for ‘spring break’, Christmas, etc.

We need more manufacturing. Working from home doesn’t get things made. Tell this to a farmer. I get working from home. It fits a lot of work, but changing standards is a slippery slope if you do not have a problem that you are trying to address and a target condition that you want to reach. What does the target condition accomplish with a 4-day work week, besides more leisure time. If people want stable families they will work hard at it. That’s why it is work.

Many people need the regimentation in order to do their jobs, others can be trusted to get the job done regardless of how many days per week the company uses. The bottom line though is if society wants to survive they have to work together.

Let’s face facts, production of tangible goods have gone off shore – why because of high labor and high energy costs the two main drives in the cost of producing something. It was not too long ago that production came back to the USA because our energy costs were very low – but we shot ourselves in the foot and drove production again off shore. So if we really want to see production versus service industries thrive in the USA we need to realize we are being lead by misplace dogma/theory that is not making the USA stronger or even competitive on the world stage but slaves to our leaders who are guiding us down this road.

I never worked a 40-hour work week. Every company I worked for over my working career was 50, 60 and sometimes 80-hour work weeks. Saturdays and Sundays was just another workday. I was raised that if you didn’t work you didn’t eat.

What’s the point of a 4-day week, when all anybody does on their days off is spend that time on their electronics not with family or friends. Nobody does a game night with the kids or friends. Nobody spends their time building a *fort* or grilling without a phone in their hands. It’s a sad, sad, place we live in now. When we eat out we see families sitting at their tables on their phones-dad, mom, and kids all on their phones! So again, what’s the point of a 4-day week if families are going to be on their electronics instead of spending time with each other. Just leave it as is or let that business decide for itself; plus the economy is the pits and we have to work more to make ends meet so why take away that extra work day that helps put food on the table.

If someone wants to work part-time, get a part-time job and be paid accordingly. I am a retired healthcare ceo. Although I was paid a salary, I worked far more than 8 hours a day five days a week. Community and professional obligations took a substantial amount of time. It was my choice to pursue the career that I did. Others may elect not to carry the same level of responsibility.

The government needs to stay out of it.
No minimum hourly wage
no defined work week
even the creation of social security was a bad idea even though I am now collecting it.
Allow each individual to be as successful or unsuccessful as they want.
There are only two differences between the rich and the poor.
1 those who became rich had the balls to take a chance
2 those who became rich came up with a product or service that others wanted and are willing to pay them for it.
If you allow the Government to take care of you then all citizens become equally poor.

Bring back mfg. Bring back energy production (oil). Get rid of NEA and state teacher unions, ad well as all govt employee unions.
Cut the budgets of all the three letter agencies and defund(shut down) all redundant agencies that are unconstitutional, which is practically all of them.
Make teachers go back to work like they did pre-virus. Majority of teacher unions didn’t want schools to reopen. Cut in to their fun time, while getting full time pay. Make it illegal for them to strike. WE pay them to work. The credits required to graduate high school can’t be acquired with 3-4 day week.
Defund govt subsidized elitist universities. Make the elitist parents of their woke mobster offspring pay for their worthless degrees.
Close the border NOW. Deport all 7 million illegal invaders NOW. Find all the “got aways” and send them back to the shiite holes they came from.
Kick the UN out of our country and deport all diplomats of countries hostile to us.
Put the drug induced mental case homeless back into institutions to get cleaned up like they were before the ACLU (American Criminal Lawyers Union) sued to release them, thereby creating the homeless industrial complex.
Defund and disbar marxist AG offices across the country. Disbar marxist judges.
Cut off all the perks for politicians except salary. Make it less attractive for sell out grifters, who should be jailed, and we might get a more noble class of people who actually want to serve.
It’s just a bit off topic but these are just a few things that we have before us that are far bigger problems than the work week.

So many people are lazy due to government supports. But companies are there to serve their customers, so if the work gets done it shouldn’t matter when . Businesses should be able to be flexible, for customers and workers. As for schools, the standard model is becoming outmoded. Private and charter schools can choose their hours, as can home schools. Government schools are no longer effective at teaching needed knowledge and skills, so they can do whatever the community decides.

Most of the people in favor of 4 day work week are young unmarried, without children and no intention of having children. Children go to school 5 days a week, and God knows need more education, Parents with children in school need the school time to earn a living and schedule work time around school hours. Able bodied people should get NOTHING from our tax money they are not victims, except of their own making.

This country is following the model of Ancient Rome. People are becoming lazy when it comes to “Physical Labor.” They are beginning to believe they are “Entitled” & therefore should not have to actually work. I seriously believe the demise of this nation is drawing much closer than anyone believes or at least will admit to and at a much more rapid rate than perceivable.

The company has to be productive and profit to stay. They should set the work schedules that will make that happen. The employees need to sign agreements and the employers should have the ability to fire those that don’t work according to the agreement. There is no one size fits all. I worked 5 days in the office, flex hours, part work at home, all at the same place. I could change my schedule after a set time period, so I worked a different schedule in the summer. I always worked 40 hours per week. Employees need to work and be reliable. It is hard to find good employees.

Working and being productive are the key elements! The workweek varies by profession anyway. Farmers and ranchers work seven days a week365 days a year! Even our school systems are changing to a more year round schedule rather than the old summer recess. But that doesn’t mean you should throw everything out and force everyone into a mold that doesn’t work for them and winds up causing them harm. Individual responsibility is the only guiding principle.

I believe in a 7 day work week. Who decided we should not be productive all waking hours? I have a simple philsophy: Work or starve. One must earn leisure time and funds to pay for that time on the iphone and for all that empty chatter on line. My real concern is that our incoming workforce offers minimal to zero skills, but typically demands light hours and high income with zero responsibility or accountability. Lacking skills in business or technology, they decline unskilled labor with an option to train and advance, as it is beneath them. Yes I am generalizing. Yes, fortunately there are exceptions; but at least in my experience, those exceptions are rare indeed. No, I am not a tyrant. I can proudly say that I have mentored several young people into successful carers. But too many of today’s applicants are lacking in ambition.

Only 9% of Americans are employed by factories? What are the other 91% doing? I am 75 & started paying into social security in 1963 while waitressing after school & on weekends. The “work” was hard but enjoyable, commoraderie and meeting new people. Then the topping on the cake…PAYDAY! Wages @ $.35 per hour, less taxes didn’t leave much but the feeling of accomplishment & freedom of having your own money, could not have been better!! We have not done our kids a favor by giving them everything & expecting nothing in return. Take a look around you, pretty sad results!
There are “help wanted” signs in almost every business in town. The postage spent sending out government handouts would probably feed a nation! Why are we no longer expected to work if we want to eat?
Kick China out of America, bring industry home, & work if you want to live! Welfare was supposed to be a hand up not a generational lifestyle. Let’s MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!! GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!
