Miracles, Apollo 8, and Christmas

miraclesHow improbable miracles seem, even right in our midst, even changing our destiny, even altering our perspective, begging us take account.  Still, we hurry on.  We have chores to do, worries to attend, distractions to indulge, things to put first.  Then comes Christmas.

Once again, Luke’s voice echoes, the angel and heavenly host, proclaiming, “Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace among men.”  How unlikely those words seem, as if spoken from space, blithely bidding us be our best, not our worst, urging faith in goodness, hope, and Him.

For a moment, the world’s worries, social media, truculence, trivia, and tawdry nature disappear.  We are again alone, under that lone star, looking back once more in awe and wonder.

Fifty-two years ago, from a place in space no man had been, words crackled back to Earth.  On Christmas Eve 1968, Apollo 8’s crew – Jim Lovell, later to command Apollo 13, Frank Borman, and Bill Anders, spoke to the largest audience in human history, quarter of the world.

They had just witnessed an “Earthrise,” our planet emerging from behind the moon.  Everything they knew fit under one thumb.  The moment was surreal, as improbable as any other miracle. Said NASA that Christmas Eve, “Do something appropriate.”  So, they did.

They read from the Bible.  Mankind had never been so far away, so much of the heavens, so big and so small.  They had escaped Earth’s pull, and suddenly the world was just a dot.

Bill Anders spoke first. “For all the people on Earth,” he said, “the crew of Apollo 8 has a message we would like to send you.”  With that, he turned to Genesis.

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said: Let there be light, and there was light.  And God saw the light, that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness.”

As Anders read, the crew came into the light and watched a green-blue ball appear against the vast blackness of space, subject of the words they spoke.  Anders’ words trailed off.

Jim Lovell, an eagle scout who once pledged, “On my honor, I will do my best to God and my country,” picked up the thread. “And God called the light Day, and darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. And God said:  Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament and divided the waters ….” As Lovell read, the “heavens” surrounded him.

Last, Borman.  “And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear, and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called the Seas, and God saw that it was good.”

Borman added: “And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you – all of you on the good Earth.”

These many years later, Apollo 8’s Genesis reading may seem distant, endearing but quaint, a miracle within a miracle when we still believed in miracles, not now relevant.

Only that is the point:  Miracles are always relevant, always worth pause – especially at Christmas.  We move so fast, dodge and dash, forget things as profound as an Earthrise to human eyes, star-filled skies, words read from deep space – about God’s love for Man.

So, if you get a chance, listen again to those epic words read – half a century ago, from beyond the moon.  Think about the power of faith to make the impossible possible. Remember the angel’s words: “Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace among men.” https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=apollo+8+christmas+audio&docid=608032769605371139&mid=66BB507FDFE6E0FB222566BB507FDFE6E0FB2225&view=detail&FORM=VIRE

Time for a new ‘Apollo 8″ via Space X Dragon crew to ISS or to Moonside with new crew anew?
Online, live feed, vs 1968.
Agree
But next lunar mission for 2026?

Very uplifting at a time as this when our country is so split. If we all knew the God who made us all wouldn’t be a wonderful world. God has blessed this nation in the past and it will take believers to bring back His blessings again. Pray everyone who believes that our country will be once again “ONE NATION UNDER GOD” and live in peace one with another. We are all God’s creation and those who believe are God’s children and live for Him.

I marvel at the sheer pointlessness of manned space exploration. We’re never going to live on the moon or Mars. Space stations are but novelties. The whole thing is a money pit with no real value inherent. Sure there were a few spinoff technologies that added practical value but at what cost? Think of all the money thrown away on this nonsense and all the good it might have done right here on planet earth, exploring the oceans and the polar regions, at the very least, not only as a source of natural resources and food but also as potential habitats for our ever-growing population. Instead, all we got is mooned. Let us focus on the things that are important, and leave these foolish exploits to the like of Elon Musk to throw his money at. As to the religious references, if your god wanted you to live in space he would have put air and water and food out there for you. But he didn’t. Think about it.

Refusing to accept that everything that exists didn’t just “pop” into being without a plan and a Creator allows leftists to live by “The ends justify the means” mantra. They believe that they are the highest authority in the universe. Well…it didn’t and they aren’t.

I wasn’t going to comment until I read that comment that downgraded space exploration, which should be the next step going forward for humans for many reasons, which I am not going to list here. I did enjoy reading the article for the reminders of the power of faith, no matter, which method you use to view life. We all need to stop being self-centered and realize that we need to live peacefully with the others around us and stop looking for ways to cheat the system by becoming satisfied with what we have.

Can you imagine an astronaut quoting Bible passages in today’s world. You’d have the leftists freaking out with their “not inclusive” b.s. and the right capitulating as they always do.

How appropriate that three of America’s best would remind us of the limitless expanse of God’s creation. How can it all be accidental?
We should remember the words of our brave astronauts as we witness those who would outlaw faith in our daily discourse.
A much needed reminder that there are many miracles not dreamt of in our mundane self absorbed lives.
Thanks Amac.

This is so refreshing to read amidst the turmoil that is going on in our nation and our world today.
We may not understand God’s timing but we have the assurance that His timing is always right.
My husband & I wish everyone at AMAC and all fellow members a Merry Christmas for no matter what is happening now, Jesus is always the reason for this season!

Loved this article. I worked all the Apollo and Gemini shots at the Cape and would have worked for nothing just for the privilege of being able to see history in the making. I wish everyone could witness these shots from the Cape in person as it takes on a whole new meaning when that rocket lifts off and you can feel your insides shaking just from noise it creates. GOD IS GREAT

Thank you for such a great and courageous article! My wife and I were married in October of 1968. That Christmas, the most people in the world (up to that time) watched the broadcast. Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders orbited the moon 10 times and the entire crew read from the bible or prayed while us on earth prayed with and for them. They were were national heroes. It was a glorious Christmas. Back then, the US was a Christian nation, proudly “under God”. Sure, we sinned, but we realized we were sinners. Your article was a call to come back and acknowledge God. It was so refreshing.

When I was a child, I watched as much as I possibly could of all the astronauts adventures, getting up in the middle of the night to join my Dad in front of the television. This one was my favorite, on Christmas Eve, and then as now, when I hear this reading and see the images from space, I get chills and marvel at the miracle of it all! Thank you for this article and the link to listen to this once again!
