AMAC Exclusive – By Barry Casselman

issue

Long edged out of the political spotlight by battleground states like Florida and Ohio, in recent years, the Upper Midwest has returned to the center stage of American politics—with formerly blue-leaning states like Wisconsin now the scene of fierce competition. Ahead of the 2022 midterms, it appears that voters in three of these states, in particular, could have an outsized influence on the results this November.

From 2000-2010, I frequently wrote op-eds for the Washington Times at the request of its esteemed editorial page editor, the late Tony Blankley. It was in that publication while covering the 2004 presidential campaign that I first used the term “Minnewisowa” to describe the political megastate, which included Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Since that time, Minnewisowa has been used by other journalists, and in many other publications. It has been listed as a new word in several dictionaries. These three adjacent states have very similar demographics, and they have tended in recent elections to vote similarly and act as bellwethers in national elections.

In mid-term elections, the voting similarities of these states are usually much less striking — since these elections often reflect more local and state issues. But the 2022 national mid-term appears now, only eight months away, likely to be significantly more “nationalized” as a response to a notably unpopular president, administration, and Congress — and it also appears that, once again, Minnewisowa could be a bellwether.

Leaning blue in recent years, Minnesota was expected to resist a possible red wave in 2022, but a new poll indicates that the state’s Democratic Party (called the Democratic-Farmer-Labor or DFL) is much more vulnerable than previously thought. Minnesota Republicans have seven major candidates running to unseat DFL Governor Tim Walz. In the KSTP/Survey USA poll, Walz only scores 43% against each of them — and leads GOP frontrunner (and first-time candidate), Scott Jensen, M.D., by only 43% to 40%. The state’s new congressional district boundaries have just been published, and seven of Minnesota’s eight seats (3 DFLers and 4 GOP) were little changed. Suburban MN-2, held by DFLer Angie Craig, had some changes, but the district remains DFL+1. She faces a tough re-election contest against Marine veteran Tyler Kistner, who almost defeated her in 2020, a mostly blue cycle in the state. A race could also develop in MN-1, whose GOP congressman recently passed away, but the district is traditionally conservative. State Republican strategists reportedly were pleased by the new legislative district boundaries and hope to take back control of the state House of Representatives as well as expand their narrow control of the state Senate.

Neighboring Iowa was the only Minnewisowa state to cast its electoral votes for Donald Trump in 2020, and is now considered a red state. Iowa has a popular GOP governor, Kim Reynolds, and the senior Republican in the U.S. Senate, Chuck Grassley, announced he is running for another term this year. The GOP currently controls both houses of the state legislature, already holds three of the four Iowa congressional seats, and seems poised to win the sole Democrat seat in 2022. The state Democratic Party has seemed to be in disarray following its caucus night debacle in 2020.

Statewide elections in Wisconsin, the third component of Minnewisowa, have been close in recent years. The state has a Democratic governor, a U.S. Senator from each party, Republican control of both houses of the legislature, and a divided congressional delegation. GOP Senator Ron Johnson just announced his re-election bid, and one Democratic congressman has already announced his retirement, leaving a competitive seat up for grabs in November. Democratic Governor Tony Evers has seen his popularity sink, like Governor Walz’s in Minnesota, following the pandemic and a series of controversial mask and lockdown orders.

In Minnewisowa states, as elsewhere, there has been a sharp partisan voter divide between those who live in larger cities and those who live in small towns and rural areas — with suburban swing voters making the difference of who wins or loses. This has been especially true in Minnesota and Wisconsin, each with a large urban area (Twin Cities and Milwaukee) where crime is on the rise. This has seemingly turned many suburban voters back to the GOP after shifting to Democrats in 2018 and 2020.

With nominees for several key races still undecided, and the political and economic uncertainties just ahead, the results of the 2022 mid-term elections remain a matter for speculation. But whatever those results turn out to be, they are likely to be foreshadowed by the voters in what now can be called Minnewisowa.

The election in 2020 taught us a great many things, not least of all to have no faith in polls. It’s way too early to look toward to November. What we can – and have to – do is find out as much information as we can right now about candidates and possible candidates. Do our homework now so there are no surprises come November.

Real journalists will – it is my prayer – present each candidate by stating what good things they have done, and what bad things they have done and let us, please God, decide for ourselves who the best candidate will be. I don’t need an echo chamber, I need real information.

I live in Wisconsin and am positive the fraud of the 2020 election gave the victory to Joe Biden. We have been trying to overturn the election without success so far. If we don’t fix what happened on 11/3/20, we’ll never have far elections again. Time is running out, fellow patriots! It doesn’t matter which party you favor, we need honest elections.

Can we honestly have a fair election in mid terms? Soros, Zuck and billionaires will pour so much money into this election, they will buy votes. If we do not have voter identification and stop illegals from voting, you can be sure this will be a land slide for the communist party again.

Wisconsin definitely went RED during 2020 and so did Arizona and even Pennsylvania. It’s possible Minnesota stayed blue but even that’s highly questionable. The totally blue states will not change there colors and are so far gone to the progressive liberal democrat party nothing will change that. Only the blind or those in denial with the reality of how this leftist administration is purposely destroying our country could vote blue ever again.

With the Project Veritas video implicating Omar in $ballot harvesting, MN certainly had fraud. Fraud will most likely continue as she is running again. If this was caught, ON VIDEO- how many other followed her lead and will again! I read Many poll workers did complain about same-day registrations saying they were questionable but were not allowed to question. So MN certainly has its problems with no one standing up for an audit, clean-up voter rolls, etc. When ya have Antifa Ellison who refused to look into this cheating- why would he go after one of his own???

For effs sake, the scandinavians who emigrated to those states in the effing 19th century left ten month winters and famine. Socialistic sharing was a means of survival. Generous welfare drew parasites who dont share your ethnic memories. The time to wake up and realize that now obesity is the major health concern is upon you. Please stop voting as if its 1890 or 1935. Its not nice to support leaches.

Seems everyone is believing that republican victories will change the scope and direction of the country. I am not sure there are enough republicans concerned more about the country and less of their position and power such as the demoncrats are. Hope I am wrong!

Democrats know that no cash bail, defund police and a laissez faire attitude to violent crime will cause more crime and more deaths. The citizens that reside in these blue cities and states are living in daily fear for their lives.   In these cities run by democrats have triple digit increases in rapes, carjacking, smash and grab robberies, home invasions, armed robberies and murders. Democrat leaders are not only OK with these sky high levels of violent crime; they just don’t care about all the people robbed or dying. The voters are starting to feel that if these democrats are not voted out they will be the next crime statistic.

“Minnewisiowa” might seem clever but it has no basis in reality. Minnesota is completely dominated by the idiocy of the Twin Cities. Wisconsin has some hope, if the utter corruption of Milwaukee can be maintained. Communism doesn’t fly in Iowa. The left is limited to powerless whiners.

The Twin Cities will soon be farmland if the dems don’t wake up and do something. Two great cities turned into complete shtholes. It’s a shame.

No, Wisconsin did too and probably Minnesota. In WI they can now conclusively prove more than 50,000 ballots were utterly bogus.
