The Department of Justice has sued Virginia over removing non-citizens from its voter rolls ahead of the November election.
The DOJ announced the suit Friday against the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Virginia State Board of Elections, and the Virginia Commissioner of Elections for allegedly violating the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
The NVRA prevents states from using systematic programs to remove ineligible voters from voter rolls within 90 days of a federal election, according to the DOJ.
“As the National Voter Registration Act mandates, officials across the country should take heed of the law’s crystal clear and unequivocal restrictions on systematic list maintenance efforts that fall within 90 days of an election,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in a statement.
“By cancelling voter registrations within 90 days of Election Day, Virginia places qualified voters in jeopardy of being removed from the rolls and creates the risk of confusion for the electorate. Congress adopted the National Voter Registration Act’s quiet period restriction to prevent error-prone, eleventh hour efforts that all too often disenfranchise qualified voters,” she added. “The right to vote is the cornerstone of our democracy and the Justice Department will continue to ensure that the rights of qualified voters are protected.”
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) slammed the DOJ over the litigation.
“With less than 30 days until the election, the Biden-Harris Department of Justice is filing an unprecedented lawsuit against me and the Commonwealth of Virginia, for appropriately enforcing a 2006 law signed by Democrat Tim Kaine that requires Virginia to remove non-citizens from the voter rolls – a process that starts with someone declaring themselves a non-citizen and then registering to vote,” Youngkin said in a statement Friday.
“Virginians – and Americans – will see this for exactly what it is: a desperate attempt to attack the legitimacy of the elections in the Commonwealth, the very crucible of American Democracy. With the support of our Attorney General, we will defend these commonsense steps, that we are legally required to take, with every resource available to us. Virginia’s election will be secure and fair, and I will not stand idly by as this politically motivated action tries to interfere in our elections, period.”
The DOJ lawsuit come two weeks after the department sued Alabama for removing ineligible voters from its voter rolls.

I think the key word here is “qualified” voters – noncitizens are not afforded the right to vote in any national election – period end of story. Thank you Virginia for standing strong.
You would think that the Department of Justice would support removing ineligible voters from the rolls at any time. They’re quick to defend democrats, but have no problem attacking Republicans and especially President Trump on fabricated grounds over a period of years.
How on earth can the DOJ have standing to bring a lawsuit? The entire Justice Department(s) is only there to INTERPRET our laws not challenge them or attempt to make them. Stand strong Virginia!
If they are “non-citizens” they are also “non-qualified” to vote. There is no question that they should be removed. They actually should never have been allowed to be added.

I heard Youngkin say that a Virginia law was signed years ago that requires the state to remove non-citizens from the voter rolls. If that’s true, the Department of Justice seems to be violating that law by suing the state. Trump should fire every DOJ employee he has the authority to fire.
It’s obvious to all what is going on since the doj isnt for the Constitution and have proven to be communist it’s not surprising. Once Trump’s in office he can clean out the communist trash and hopefully deport it to where it belongs.

Perhaps if Virginia simply filed criminal charges against the thousands of ineligible voters, the DOJ would prefer that? I know, lots of paperwork, filing fees, etc but wouldn’t THAT send a message to anyone who knew they were not eligible to vote but registered anyway.
Democrats have been trying to stop cleaning voter rolls for decades. This needs to stop if you’re not a citizen of the United States you don’t get to vote. It’s real simple.

The 1933 law may have been beneficial when immigrants complied with the immigration policies. The law was written before it was even conceived that the administration would allow millions of illegals to come into the country and try to vote. The law was also written prior to having the electronic technology that we have now. If the DOJ can prevent the removal of undocumented voters from participating in the privilege of voting, why can’t we just stop paying taxes! Qualified voters do not need to worry. If they go to vote and are denied IN ERROR they will be give a “provisional”ballot. If the election is close enough, then (and only then) all provisional ballots will be researched and verified and counted or rejected. They won’t be counted if altogether they would make no difference in the outcome. I’m not an expert but this is my understanding.
Many many years ago there were Demovrats that loved this country. That is no more. This action is more like “The British are coming, the British are coming!! ” Remember the Revolutionary War. The colonists were oppressed by the government. Horrible things happened that were overlooked by the so called British law. Land was taken, women were raped, unfair taxes were levied, etc. It was much was than most school history books depict.
