I would frequently ask my dad what he was doing in the Navy during battles I had seen on the show “Victory at Sea.” His usual response was, “I was doing my job, fixing the mothball fleet and getting them into the war.” I found that he had a 30 day pass during D-Day, while his best friend, Sam Knudsen, from the old home town was fighting in the hedgerows, and was KIA on 6/8/44. Sam is buried somewhere in France, as is George S. Patton. I’m sure Sam had not planned it the way it worked out for him, but he did his duty to the end. Everyone gave something, some gave everything, like Sam, and never saw their loved ones again. I sincerely Thank God that Sam, and his buddies, lived.
