Alabama is the first of the U.S. States alphabetically, though it is the 22nd state to be admitted to the union in 1819. The roughly rectangular-shaped state is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, and Mississippi to the west. The Florida panhandle largely blocks state access to the Gulf of Mexico, except for in Alabama’s southwestern corner where Mobile Bay is located. The Tennessee River is in the northern part of the state, with the Appalachian Mountains ending in north-central Alabama. Fertile prairie lowlands, known as the Black Belt, stretch across the mid-section of the state and northeastern Mississippi.
