Podcasts are collections of digital audio files that can be downloaded or streamed for listening. You can hear them on your computer and devices such as smartphones and tablets. Apple and Spotify, for example, offer easy access to podcasts for entertainment via apps. Be aware that some shows may require subscriptions, most of which are free. Most podcasts are typically hosted by a person, or several people, to drive topics, lead conversations and interviews, take questions and share stories, and provide news and education. There are many different types available, embracing subjects from A to Z, such as auto racing to Zumba. The quickest way to find lists of podcasts is through Google. Simply type in the genre you are interested in, such as “health podcasts” or “cooking podcasts,” and a list will be generated. In some cases, you may need to scroll past ads to get to the list. You can also google popular podcasts, read reviews, or ask friends and family for recommendations. When listening, expect to hear some advertisements as it helps to fund them. Podcasts are not only entertaining but many are designed to inform and enlighten listeners. While most are tastefully done, know that podcasts remain largely uncensored, so be sure to choose wisely.

A single audio recording of a series is called a podcast episode. Here are some favorable ones:

The Long Island History Project (Features interviews with historians, scholars, authors, and more. Great for anyone with a passion for history & this special region of New York.) Episode recommendation: Chris Bodkin’s Book of Sayville –A long-time resident of the South Shore town of Sayville shares stories of his life after a move from Brooklyn to the lovely hamlet. He describes the history of Main Street, sailing on the Great South Bay, and his introduction to the “exotic food” known as pizza.

Ted Talks Daily (Talks are broad with a focus on motivation, education, and innovation.) Episode recommendation: Do you need to do a detox? Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter – An educational talk about the amazing human body and the consequences of “cleansing” and “detoxing.” Learn about the liver and its important biological functions in the body.

Food with Mark Bittman (Talks cover all aspects of food – including gardening, cooking & more.) Episode recommendation: Bittman Bread! – Host Mark Bittman and Kerri Conan talk about their new book, Bittman Bread: No-Knead Whole Grain Baking for Every Day. Bittman talks about the experimentation of techniques involved in the art of baking bread and elaborates on using whole grain flour and more.

Freakonomics Radio (Talks explore the hidden aspect of things.) Episode recommendation: What’s Wrong with Shortcuts? This talk deals with the sensibility of taking shortcuts in life to maximize time and energy. Learn about how shortcuts can be applied practically to everyday life by listening to British mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, author of Thinking Better: The Art of the Shortcut in Math and Life.

This is just a mini sampling of some interesting podcasts, but there are tons out there! If you’re feeling bored or a bit lonely, podcasts are an excellent way to get your mind engaged in exciting topics you love. And they are a great way to stay entertained on a long, dull car trip or when you seek to be entertained. What’s more, many tend to offer casual formats that are fun and lighthearted yet informative. As a result, they can make you feel like you are spending time with friends listening to exciting experiences, and learning new things.
