Oh no!

I was feeling frustrated when my washer and dryer simultaneously failed. Since the appliances were older with obsolete parts, it was time to replace the duo rather than repair them. When researching new appliances, it became abundantly clear that technology has improved with time. I was delighted to learn about the fantastic upgrades available on newer machines. Here are some noteworthy improvements:

Front load capability: Most manufacturers are saying goodbye to top load machines. Front load designs are not only easier to load and unload, but most new designs feature larger capacity drums with inside lighting. Front loaders are mainly desirable as they tend to use less energy and water and offer environmental and money saving benefits.

Improved controls: Instead of reaching up and down to turn the machines on and off, many new designs offer controls that are in the middle of the machine. This is especially helpful for operating stacked units. Rather than old-fashioned turn dials, the panels are touch screen and a breeze to press and operate.

Customizable dry/wash cycles: While normal, heavy, and delicate cycles are common on older model machines, today’s dryers offer increased features like steam, refresh, and de-wrinkle options. Some new washing machines even offer allergen cycles for households with allergy sufferers. This cycle works by using high-temperature water to remove allergens from clothing.

Sensor-dry: Dryers with this feature can detect moisture levels in clothing and automatically adjust the drying time and temperature. This works to prevent over-drying and wasted energy by avoiding excessive heat, so it’s good for your clothes and wallet.

Automatic detergent dispensers: Most new machines now have automatic detergent dispensers. Drawers are typically filled by users with liquid detergents and fabric softeners. What’s nice is that liquids are stored in a tray so that users don’t have to refill between each load. When the feature is turned on, the washer automatically detects the load level and dispenses the proper amount of detergent and fabric softener to each wash cycle based on the load.

Self-cleaning features: Machines with this feature run on a special cycle designed to eradicate dirt and detergent residue that can build up inside washers. As a result, self-cleaning washers keep the inside mold and odor free for optimal freshness.

Dual-bin washer and dryer: These machines come with two separate bins so that a person can launder colors and whites at the same time – simultaneously! They also enable the flat drying of delicate clothes.

Smart connection/technology: Having smart connection/technology allows users to download an app and control the washer from any location. Thus, smart washing machines can be started, stopped, or monitored from afar. Some machines can also be operated using remote controls, ideal for those with limited mobility or people on the go.

Combination washer dryers: These single all-in-one washer dryer combos eliminate the need to move damp or heavy clothes from the washer to the dryer. In fact, these machines do both the washing and drying without having to do the transfer. This double-duty technology is especially helpful for people who tend to leave wet clothes in the washer and forget about them. Combination units automatically switch from wash to drying mode, so users will never have to rerun “forgotten” loads.

Technology makes life easier

Our new washer and dryer unit was recently installed. Though I was selective in features due to cost, I am delighted to report that the new machines run much smoother and quieter than the old ones. In addition, the new units are more efficient, using less water and electricity, so we expect to save money over the long haul. I’m enjoying the steam/refresh cycle and regularly use it as an alternative to ironing. Plus, our new machines play musical tunes when loads are complete, an unexpected upgrade to the unpleasant beeping of the old machines. Most favorite are the reminders it gives me, like the ones to clean the lint screen or refill detergents. The new machines have changed my outlook on doing laundry, as it is now a more satisfying task.
