Got the blahs from being homebound due to winter weather? Time to “amp up” the fun and engage the family in some amusing home activities. Here are three fantastic ideas:
1) Family movie night – put a spin on this fun family activity by creating your own home movies and casting them on the television. Get the teens involved by having a contest to see who can create the best film and hand out prizes for most original movie, best music, favorite performance by an actor, greatest filmography, best producer, director, and more! Be sure to get the awards and popcorn ready for this entertaining family event!
2) Crafting – grab some canvases, paintbrushes, and acrylic paint and let your inner Bob Ross shine through! Acrylic paint is a great medium for beginner painters, and it is inexpensive and quick drying. Select objects around the house to be used as your paint subjects, such as bananas and oranges in a fruit bowl, a glass vase filled with flowers, or a favorite photo of your family pet. What’s nice about acrylics is that they can be used without toxic solvents, and brushes can be cleaned up with simple soap and water. As a bonus, your creations can add to your home’s décor.
3) International cooking – spend time in the kitchen together creating meals from around the world. Ideas include making homemade pasta (Italy), a loaf of bread (France), or Spätzle, a type of pasta made of eggs, flour, salt, and sparkling water to fluff up the dough (Germany). Play music from the region, learn new words and phrases and absorb fun facts about the culture as you enjoy popular foods of each region. Younger kids can help measure, acquire math skills, and learn about kitchen safety. Older kids can develop culinary skills, gain confidence in the kitchen, and widen their experiences with food. It’s a win-win for the whole family.
