Photography is the art or practice of taking and processing photographs. This artform uses light, related radiation, or light-sensitive material to record the image of objects. With proper camera equipment, one can capture iconic images of people, places, and things.

As a hobby

Photography is a wonderful pastime for all ages, young and old alike. Capturing a glorious sunset over the sea, a baby’s wide grin, a puppy nestled in a child’s arms, or a lightning strike in action, offer new ways to experience life up close and personal. Per Kidsworldfun.com, “Your age, gender, fitness level, technical knowhow – none of these matter as long as you have the interest. Even people with disabilities can pursue this hobby.” If you have the time and desire to take photos, plus minimal equipment, it’s easy to get started. While a person can begin photography using their cellphone’s camera, or an old camera they may own, superior equipment may be desired as one progresses. This includes items like:

  • A decent camera capable of advanced shooting and superior image quality.
  • A camera strap and bag to securely transport and store equipment.
  • A suitable lens with features such as wide-lens capability, zoom options, and the ability to capture sharp images.
  • Flash capability to brighten subjects in dark surroundings.
  • Memory card to transfer photos to a computer for storage.
  • A tripod to increase focus and hold camera still.

Getting started is as easy as 1-2-3!

Breaking into photography is rewarding for people of all ages and backgrounds. There are numerous ways for newbies to get started in photography.

  • Practice, practice, practice. This is the primary way to gain experience and to ascertain what type of photography is most enjoyable, such as nature, portrait, astrophotography, and more. In addition to developing skills, one can also establish a sense of style.
  • Self-education is an important part of learning. Read books on the topic to learn about camera care and aspects of photography to include lighting, exposure, composition, shooting modes and more.
  • Take a photography class to master the use of the camera and to learn new techniques from basic to advanced. Understanding things like shutter speed and aperture can help improve the quality of photos and enhance the photography experience.
  • Join a photography group to learn from others. Networking provides opportunities to ask questions, discover new methods, and exchange ideas. It’s also a great way to bond with people possessing similar interests.

Have fun with it!

The main component in photography is an interest in the artform, coupled with a beginner’s camera. Get out and practice and don’t let anything hold you back. Begin experimenting with different subjects, backgrounds, and lighting. If you discover photography is something you enjoy, engage in it by reading books, taking classes, and joining groups.

Get started today!

Photography is more than just pointing and shooting the camera. It’s an art that affords people opportunities to brilliantly capture and share new perspectives of the world around them. So, if you think photography might be for you, don’t hesitate to get started today.
