Outdoor spaces are perfect for entertaining family and friends. But, if your yard falls a little flat on being inviting, there are five basic backyard upgrades that can add tremendous appeal and entertainment value to your yard. Here are five recreation areas to create to make your yard the perfect hang-out:

One: Add a firepit.

Fire pits or DIY fire pit kits can be purchased at home improvement stores or online. Be thoughtful about the placement of your fire pit. Per Farm Bureau Financial Services, whether you are relaxing in the wilderness or in your own backyard, fire pit safety is top priority. Ideally, fire pits should be located on level surfaces in open areas and away from objects that can burn such as structures, wooden decks, fences, and canopies. Additionally, fire pits should never be placed under covered patios or below trees. Wood burning fire pits are generally favored over others due to the nostalgia and ambiance they provide. In terms of entertainment, guests can gather to roast marshmallows, make s’mores, sing songs, or share spooky or animated stories by a crackling fire – enjoying the evening under the moon and stars.

Two: Add swings.

We are not talking about kids’ swing sets, albeit they are fun. Rather, we are referring to porch-style or individual swings where adults can sit and relax, read, or enjoy a cool lemonade in the shade. Swing seating may be mounted to a porch roof or attached to a tree much like a hammock. Or they may be purchased with swing frames that are ideal for backyards where mounting space is lacking. Swings come in many price points and materials, including wood, powder-coated steel, and durable HDPE material that is water and corrosive resistant. Swings provide an ideal space to enjoy shade, which is important for summertime entertainment. As a bonus, most framed swing seating units feature canopy tops, adjustable backrests, cushions, pillows, side tables or drink holders, and places for reading material and mobile devices. Plus, they provide seating for multiple people, so they are practical for group entertaining.

Three: Add comfy lounging space.

Loungers or chaise lounges are specialty chairs that are bed-like in nature, so people can recline in style. Like porch swings, they are available in many materials and styles, including wood, wicker and metal, and come with cushion options. Lounge chairs are crafted for comfort and are available in ergonomic designs.  These premium reclinable outdoor seats are not only inviting, but they are frequently sold in sets of two – perfect for couples or groups of friends seeking to relax outdoors. Typically, lounge chairs are placed in sunny spots near gardens, patios, or pools and can be accessorized with free standing umbrellas for shade.  Newer models are luxurious, lightweight, and have wheels to make them portable. Some lounges are designed to fold for storage during off-season. In addition to their ability to recline, other features include adjustable backrests, comfy cushions, drink holders, and arm rests. Quite simply, they are the perfect addition to a backyard centered on relaxation and guest comfort.

Four: Add tables and chairs.

Tables and chairs provide the perfect eating and hanging out spots for guests. They are essential for entertainment. Tables prevent guests from having to uncomfortably juggle food plates or rest them on their laps. Not only are outdoor tables available in many shapes, sizes, and styles, but they also come in various materials from HDPE plastic to wood. As a bonus, the number of pieces in sets do vary, creating options for buyers. Those who host large parties should opt for spacious tables with multiple chairs. Experts recommend paying attention to factors such as deck size and clearance space for walkways, patio doors, and more. For a proper fit, measure before making your purchase. Picnic tables, custom-made ones, or those which extend offer easy solutions for odd-shaped decks and patios.

Five: Add a grilling station.

Entertaining is all about good company and food. A grilling station allows hosts to prepare and serve scrumptious meals outdoors, like juicy hamburgers, tender ribs, or grilled vegetables. Gas, charcoal, and electric are typically the most popular types of grills on the market. In the debate over which is best, much of the decision boils down to personal preferences. Ease of use, reliability, flavor and grill-quality of foods, plus space requirements are common considerations. Safety is an important factor when deciding on grill placement. Expect smoke or flare-ups that typically occur when grilling foods. Just like your fire pit, use common sense and avoid locating your grill station near flammable structures and objects.

It’s all about enjoyment! Backyards are ideal spaces to entertain family and friends. You can easily upgrade your yard and make your own oasis by adding areas for people to gather, eat, converse, have fun, and kick back and relax.
