Lamps are important devices that help to light our homes. They are generally portable and inexpensive as compared to fixed lighting fixtures, such as a chandelier. Lamps have shades or covers, which are sometimes decorative in nature. However, most are capable of diffusing or redirecting light that emanates from the bulb. Thus, they serve important purposes, including softening the intensity of light as well as protecting eyes from bright glares. Lamps come in all shapes, sizes, and designs, so how do you know which one is right for your space? Here are three main considerations when deciding upon a style:

1) Purpose: What purpose shall your lamp serve? Do you want it for reading or to give the room a soft ambiance? A brighter lamp is optimal for reading, whereas one with softer lighting is preferable for ambiance.

2) Size: The average table lamp is 30 to 36 inches tall. Generally, as a standard rule of thumb, your lamp should be a maximum of 1.5 times the height of your table, and the shade should be twice as wide as the diameter of the base of the lamp but not exceed the size of the table upon which it sits. Additionally, the bottom of the lampshade should be no higher than eye level when you’re seated.

3) Style: Contrary to popular belief, lamp styles do not always have to match each other within a room unless you are seeking a formal look in which pairs work best or you seek balance, such as on nightstand sets. Fixtures should generally complement each other and reflect your overall décor style. If you seek similar elements, select all silver or all gold-tone lamps to unite the space as an example.

Choosing a lamp does not have to be complicated. Simply bear in mind these three factors. Always test a lamp before buying to make sure that the light it gives off is adequate for your purpose, consider the height and size of the lamp and shade in relation to your table and line of vision, and pick a style you like that complements the room’s vibe. It’s as easy as one, two, three.
