Behavior matters

Growing older (and wiser) has its benefits, but for skin, aging can lead to complications. Per WebMD, a reliable source of health information, “As we get older, our skin undergoes a number of changes. How skin ages will depend on several factors: your lifestyle, diet, heredity, and other personal habits (such as smoking).” Beneficial makeup ingredients may help to slow the negative effects of aging on the human body.

Sun & Skin

Sun exposure also has a large impact on our skin. Repeated and/or prolonged sun exposure can lead to some skin conditions, and sometimes, to the unfortunate development of various types of skin cancer. Thus, prevention is key. Before reviewing beneficial makeup ingredients for the skin, let’s learn some good news first!

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

We understand that aging of the skin can be problematic. So, what’s the good news? There’s some when it comes to our health, as we are not helpless. Our behavior, including the products we use on our skin, can greatly influence skin health outcomes. For women, this includes using beneficial makeup ingredients – effective ingredients that can protect and promote healthy skin.

let’s review some common skin problems that typically accompany aging:

Here are some examples:

  • Thin/fragile skin
  • Saggy skin
  • Wrinkly skin
  • Dry/rough skin
  • Less elastic skin
  • Sallow skin

People with mature skin may also experience some of the following:

  • Age spots
  • Broken or noticeable blood vessels
  • Skin tag
  • Warts
  • Peeling skin
  • Moles
  • Blemishes
  • Skin sensitivities

Why should this matter?

It’s important to use beauty products which are safe and effective. Women over 30, and especially mature women over age 50, should seek non-toxic products tailored to combat common age-related skin issues. For example, a woman with dry skin will likely benefit from hydrating makeup containing non-toxic and safe products.

Here is a sampling of ingredients designed to help the skin that are commonly found in makeup products. To understand what is right for you, do your homework and review these products with a medical professional:

  • Algae extract (A marine based product which contains bioactive compounds that are beneficial to skin.)
  • Amino acids (These are small molecules that the body uses to build proteins. They help keep skin hydrated and plump.)
  • Ashwagandha (Parts of this plant are used in cosmetics to help reduce acne and to soften, clarify, and replenish the skin.)
  • Botanical extracts (These plant materials are used for medicinal and therapeutic properties)
  • Ceramides (These are made up of long-chain fatty acids that link with other important molecules to promote cellular function. They help to protect the epidermis and lock moisture into the skin.)
  • Collagen (This is a main component that forms the skin. It is a natural humectant and moisturizer.)
  • Hyaluronic acid (Naturally found in the body, hyaluronic acid helps lubricate tissues and more. It is known to reduce wrinkles, redness, and dermatitis.)
  • Jojoba oil (The jojoba shrub produces oil and is frequently used in cosmetics to create a moisture barrier. It boasts of being hypoallergenic and noncomedogenic.)
  • Probiotics (These live microorganisms are often found in beauty products. They are known to help with skin conditions such as eczema, acne, and dry skin.)
  • Retinol (This form of Vitamin A has anti-aging effects and can help clear acne.)
  • Broad-spectrum Sunscreen (This blocks UVA and UVB rays and prevents sunburns that can harm skin.)
  • Squalene (This saturated oil increases hydration and fights signs of aging.)
  • Other vitamins including C, B, D, and more (Vitamins are essential for growth and maintenance of body tissues and to regulate and support chemical reactions. They are put in cosmetics to increase skin health, nourish the skin, and to fight signs of aging.)
  • And more…

Beneficial makeup ingredients

Above is a mini sampling of ingredients often found in beauty products that are generally deemed beneficial to the skin. While these ingredients often function favorably, they do not necessarily indicate that they are right for everyone. Do note that skin requirements are unique, and that individual sensitivities and product results may vary.

Take care

People with sensitive skin and/or those with special skin conditions should seek a doctor’s advice prior to testing or using new products. Should skin issues or concerns arise related to a particular product, discontinue use, and consult a medical professional for evaluation, testing, care, or treatment as required. Regardless of preexisting skin conditions, it’s important for consumers to continually seek out makeup ingredients designed to benefit the skin.
