This strong legislation casts a blanket of protection over senior New Mexicans by issuing a Silver Alert when a wandering senior needs help returning to safety.

The Honorable Martin R. Zamora
New Mexico House District 63
490 Old Santa Fe Trail
Santa Fe, NM 87501

Dear Representative Zamora:

On behalf of the over 2.1 million members of AMAC – Association of Mature American Citizens, including over 15,400 who reside in New Mexico, I write to offer our support for House Bill 301.

American seniors are more susceptible to symptoms of Alzheimer’s and other dementias than younger people, and these diseases carry with them the possibility that those afflicted will become disoriented and wander away.

There is much research and data available on the wandering phenomenon and the consequences thereof. For
example, the National Institutes of Health states:

“More than 60% of persons with dementia will wander. The consequences of wandering vary from minor injuries to high search and rescue costs and death. If not found within 24 hours, up to half of those who wander and get lost will suffer serious injury or death.”

Your legislation casts a blanket of protection over senior New Mexicans by establishing a “Silver Alert” to be sent to the public and supported by law enforcement when there is information that someone is lost and needs assistance returning to safety.

AMAC appreciates your efforts, Representative Zamora, to protect our seniors with this life-saving legislation, and we are pleased to offer our organization’s full support for HB 301.

Sincerely,

Andrew J. Mangione Jr.
Senior Vice President
