Shopping secondhand

Looking to save money? Don’t enjoy overpaying for things? If so, this article about shopping secondhand is for you!

What are secondhand stores?

Secondhand stores are retail shops that sell secondhand (used) goods at reduced prices. There are many benefits to shopping at stores that resell items. Not only do people enjoy the thrill of hunting for and finding bargains, but they also help the environment by giving goods a second chance at being used and enjoyed.

A big benefit

Shopping at secondhand stores is a great way to save money on furnishings, artwork, knickknacks, and more that might otherwise end up in a landfill.

Unique finds

Thrift stores, antique shops, yard sales, flea markets, and discount centers can provide access to designer or eclectic items at bargain prices. It is also possible to thrift online. However, in doing the latter, choose reliable, secure, and trustworthy vendors. Before making online purchases, read customer reviews and understand pricing and return policies and so forth. If you are uncertain about the safety of conducting a transaction online, listen to your intuition and do not make the purchase.

How to shop thrift

Using your smart device, look up secondhand, thrift, and consignment shops in your area. Understand the type of items the stores carry as products may vary. Note that while people sometimes use store terms interchangeably, thrift stores are typically donation-based whereas consignment shops generally pay the original owner once the items sell. Regardless, they are all good options for finding gems and gaining discounts.

Quality and value

Quality is a standard by which products are measured. High quality items demonstrate excellence. Value describes the product’s worth. Items can be of high monetary or sentimental value. Whether it be clothing or home furnishings, both are important to consumers searching for secondhand products.

Buying secondhand clothes

Clothes are frequently sold secondhand. These pre-loved pieces can be bought at substantial savings as compared to original price. Look for brand names that are recognizable and known for their high quality. This is a great way to add expensive pieces to the wardrobe at a huge savings. Understand that you may have to visit several shops over time to find pieces that deliver the looks you want. Although consignment shops may offer items at a slightly higher cost than thrift shops, they tend to be choosy when accepting pieces from sellers. Therefore, you are less likely to find damaged or stained clothing. Regardless, it is important to check the condition of clothing carefully. Do check the inside pockets for holes, watch for typical areas of wear and tear, and check the overall condition. If you are handy with sewing, consider buying items that are durable and can be hemmed or taken in for a tailored fit.

Purchasing secondhand home furnishings

When selecting home decor items, choose furnishings that fit your space, are useful, and have appeal. Most thrift shopping experts state that the bones of furniture pieces are of main importance. While small scratches in wood can be easily repaired, buyers will want to choose sturdy furniture that will last. For instance, the body and legs of a couch should be strong and secure. Unless you are handy, avoid pieces with serious issues such as deep cracks and unsteadiness. A danger in buying used furniture is the potential for bed bugs. Avoid vendors who do not thoroughly examine furniture before reselling.

In conclusion…

Shopping secondhand, especially thrifting, is not just an eco-friendly practice, but it also helps organizations in need. Additionally, your purchases work to keep people employed. It is comforting to know that when people have outgrown their need for certain goods, these stores give items a second life. Whether you opt to shop secondhand, or prefer discount stores offering new items, they have something good in common. They give buyers on tight budgets opportunities to purchase goods that might otherwise be unaffordable.

I learned the hard way that thrift store shopping for clothes is a bad idea. Our family ended up with bed bugs and we had to spend $10,000 to get rid of them. I will never ever buy used clothes again.

Let the buyer beware… I much prefer the thrift store to on-line used item shopping. I prefer being able to try it on and look things over before the purchase. Usually, thrift store purchases are final. There is no return. I always wash or dry clean clothing items before wearing them. When you consider most of us only wear 20% of our wardrobe a lot of fairly new items appear at the Thrift Stores at 50% or less of original cost. But it not for everyone. Many people have a hang up with wearing used clothing or using used items of any sorts. They feel it’s beneath them. My wife would not even consider going into a thrift store, let alone wearing anything used. My daughter buys kids clothes at the thrift store. So, there is a mindset issue here. Most men aren’t shoppers, I am. 90% of my clothes come from the thrift store. I’m selective, I have a closet full of very nice brand name clothes that I give to charity and replace yearly.
