On Monday, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) became the second House Republican to file articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden, following Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene’s (R-GA) impeachment resolution last month. In addition to Biden, Ogles has also called for the impeachment of Vice President Kamala Harris, while Greene has called to remove Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves.
Currently, House GOP leadership has shown no indication that they plan on moving forward with any impeachment proceedings – at least at the moment. However, the allegations levied by Greene and Ogles nonetheless provide a useful synopsis of the many derelictions of duty by Biden and his top lieutenants, and could become a powerful messaging tool for Republicans heading into the 2024 election cycle.
Greene’s impeachment resolution against Biden, which she unveiled on May 18, consists of three articles.
The first article accuses Biden of “willfully violating the Immigration and Nationality Act,” which encouraged a substantial increase in “illegal drug smuggling” and border crossings. In doing so, Biden, according to Green, endangered “the security of the United States” and hindered “the will of Congress” by allowing illegal aliens to illegally enter the country despite the health and security risks associated with such a decision.
The second article also focuses on Biden’s border failures, specifically his decision to admit migrants who had tested positive for COVID-19, thus endangering American citizens, in violation of his constitutional oath.
The third article continues upon the second, stating, “President Biden has created a national security crisis and is endangering the lives of everyday Americans with his open borders policies.” It asserts that the Biden administration, while repealing the “Remain in Mexico policy,” has failed “to complete the southern border wall” and improve declining infrastructure at the border, and cost the American taxpayer more than $2 billion in the process.
Ogles’s articles of impeachment took a different approach, with the Tennessee legislator accusing Biden of “weaponizing” the presidency, both during his time as president and vice president, to “shield the business and influence peddling schemes of his family from congressional oversight and public accountability.”
In addition to taking aim at Biden, Ogles also filed articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris for “extraordinary incompetence in the execution of her duties and responsibilities and an indifference to Americans suffering as a result of America’s ongoing southern border crisis.”
“[Harris] has allowed the land invasion at our southern border to continue unchecked, threatening the livelihoods of millions and the lives of thousands who have been murdered at the hands of illegal aliens and died from illicit fentanyl,” Ogles said.
But it’s not just the White House that Republicans have thrust under the impeachment spotlight. In addition to Biden, Greene has also filed articles of impeachment against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, FBI Director Christopher Wray, and U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves.
Mayorkas in particular has generated some notable impeachment talk among Republicans in both the House and the Senate for his handling of the border crisis and blatantly dishonest statements to Congress. Greene accused Mayorkas specifically of violating the Secure Fence Act, which requires DHS to maintain “operational control” of the U.S.-Mexico border.
“Since assuming office, Secretary Mayorkas has aided and abetted the complete invasion of our country by deliberately flooding our nation with drugs, terrorists, and illegal aliens,” Greene said. “He stated under oath that we have operational control of our borders, while also under oath, he stated that no one has ever achieved operational control of the border. He lied to the American people.”
Greene’s next target, FBI Director Wray, faces impeachment charges for facilitating “the development of a Federal police force to intimidate, harass, and entrap American citizens that are deemed enemies of the Biden regime.” Under Biden’s watch, Wray’s FBI has notably slapped a “domestic terrorism threat tag” on parents who spoke out at school board meetings, sent a SWAT team to arrest a pro-life demonstrator, and of course raided the home of Biden’s chief political rival, Donald Trump.
Greene accused Wray of turning the FBI into Biden’s “personal police force,” saying, “It is unacceptable for the Director of the FBI or any civil officer to exercise his power in a way that targets one political class while doing favors for the other.”
Graves, Greene’s last target, is the U.S. District Attorney for the District of Columbia. In her articles of impeachment against him, Greene pointed out that Graves had declined to prosecute well over half of common criminals arrested by D.C. police officers, while at the same time pursuing harsh punishments for January 6 defendants.
“Because you refuse to prosecute real criminals that are violating all the [laws] here in Washington, D.C., and you want to talk about D.C. residents — they are victims of your abuse of power,” Greene said. “And because of that, I am introducing articles of impeachment on you, Mr. Graves.”
It may well be the case that none of these impeachment articles ever sees a vote on the House floor. But with the mainstream media and elected Democrats determined to cover up the corruption and failure that has defined Biden’s presidency, it can at least be said that Greene and Ogles are doing everything they can to hold the administration to account.
