Heading into what increasingly looks to be a tough year for the Democrats in midterm elections, logic would dictate that they should be working hard to stave off unnecessary political liabilities and prevent any further disaster for their party at the ballot box. Instead—at a time when our nation is overrun with crises almost entirely of the Biden administration and Congressional Democrats’ own making—Democrats seem to be going out of their way to reinforce the notion that they are a party of radical elitists who are disconnected from the values, needs, and interests of the American people.
Rather than finding meaningful ways to ease crippling inflation, lower gas prices, or avert yet another disastrous spring on the southern border, Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress have evidently decided to double down on progressive culture war issues that are alienating parents, families, and everyday Americans in extraordinary numbers. As the left pushes extreme left-wing policies like sex reassignment surgery for children, allowing biological men to compete in women’s sports, and Critical Race Theory and gender ideology in schools, they continue to generally ignore the cascade of real crises that affect normal Americans. And they are doing so at their own increasing peril.
On March 31, the same day the New York Times reported that inflation was “running at the fastest pace since 1982” and one day after the Wall Street Journal reported the administration would end its use of the Trump-era Title 42 (which border officials warn would unleash an unprecedented surge of illegal immigration), Biden opted to use the full bully pulpit of the presidency to promote the “Transgender Day of Visibility.” This is a day reserved by the White House to “honor” “transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people,” support so-called “medical care for transgender kids,” and criticize calls “to ban transgender children from playing sports.” The administration “is standing up for you against all these hateful bills,” Biden said in a video released on his social media pages.
Meanwhile, Biden is using his Department of Justice to push back on red states considering legislation to ban sex change operations for children or to punish parents for forcibly attempting to “change” their children’s gender. A letter sent to state attorneys general from the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Kristen Clarke declares that any attempt to restrict medical procedures available to “transgender youth” amounts to “unlawful discrimination based on their gender identity, including when seeking gender-affirming care,” which the Biden administration went on to define as a series of radical and, in many cases, irreversible interventions.
Additionally, in response to Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill—which bans “classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate” for students in kindergarten through third grade—the left reacted in over-the-top fashion. Biden rebuked the bill as “hateful” after it was passed by the Florida Senate Education Committee in February. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki similarly denounced the legislation as “discriminatory” and “horrific.” Hillary Clinton criticized the bill as an instance of “performative cruelty” that “will only serve to hurt children and families.”
Left-wing corporations and celebrities did not hesitate to join the onslaught either. After the bill was signed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the Walt Disney Company issued a statement calling for the law to be “struck down,” claiming it “should never have passed and should never have been signed into law.” A chorus of progressive activists, celebrities, and politicians echoed this sentiment—representing the left’s newfound eagerness to indoctrinate young children with gender theory and other age-inappropriate material.
Is it any wonder poll numbers for Biden and other Democrats are now sinking to new record lows?
From historically high inflation to an impending influx of illegal immigration to skyrocketing energy prices, it is almost unfathomable why the Biden team would resort to far-left culture war aggression nearly six months out from a vitally important midterm election, in which they are already poised to suffer major setbacks at nearly every level.
Even some self-described liberals don’t understand it. Last month, talk show host Bill Maher opened up about his growing frustration with the Democratic Party’s increasingly culture war-oriented political platform. “Letting three-year-olds decide what gender they are—this wasn’t something five years ago,” Maher noted. “Look, I haven’t changed—at all. My politics haven’t changed. They’ve changed.”
Should Biden and others in his party continue down this divisive path of cultural extremism, they may soon find that Maher is far from alone in his disillusionment. With the Democratic Party’s sellout to the radical left now complete, the fallout at the ballot box will only continue to grow.
