Free live session on July 14 will help Americans nearing retirement protect their tax savings and prepare for Medicare enrollment without penalties.
BOHEMIA, N.Y. — July 9, 2026 — The AMAC Foundation, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), will host a free educational webinar, “Medicare Pitfalls: Medicare and Health Savings Accounts Don’t Mix — How to Prepare for Medicare Enrollment Without Tax Penalties,” on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
The session is designed for Americans approaching Medicare eligibility who — or whose employers — are still contributing to a Health Savings Account (HSA). Once a person enrolls in any part of Medicare, HSA contributions must stop, and missteps in timing can trigger IRS tax penalties that catch many pre-retirees off guard.
“The intersection of Medicare and HSAs is one of the most misunderstood corners of retirement planning,” said Ian Gargan, Executive Director of the AMAC Foundation. “A single wrong step in the enrollment timeline can undo years of tax-advantaged saving. We built this webinar to give people the practical guidance they need before they make an irreversible decision.”
Attendees will learn:
- How Medicare enrollment interacts with ongoing HSA contributions
- The timing rules that most often trigger tax penalties
- How to coordinate Medicare and Social Security enrollment with an existing HSA strategy
- Practical steps to take in the months before turning 65
The session will be led by AMAC Foundation Social Security Advisors Deborah Dunlap, Eileen Cook, and Sharon Kleczka. Cook and Kleczka are each nationally certified by the NSSA and accredited Registered Social Security Analysts (RSSA) through the RSSA program, and together bring more than 60 years of combined experience in healthcare and financial services.
