As the year ends, I am gathering my expenses for tax season. I have had quite a few medical expenses on top of my high supplement premiums, which got me thinking: Are my Medicare costs tax deductible?

The answer to your question is yes. Medicare premiums and other medical expenses can indeed be tax deductible under certain conditions. However, like many aspects of tax law, there are exceptions you should be aware of.
When Are Medicare Premiums Deductible?
Medicare premiums are a medical expense. Therefore, you can itemize them as deductions on your federal income taxes. The same goes for Medicare Part B, Part D, and Part C premiums. Additionally, Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) premiums are also deductible.
To claim these deductions, you must itemize your deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040). Just make sure your medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Only the amount that exceeds this 7.5% threshold is deductible.
Other Tax-Deductible Medical Expenses
- Out-of-pocket Medicare costs: such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance under any part of Medicare.
- Dental, Vision, and Hearing Expenses: such as dental, vision and hearing exams, glasses, and related procedures.
- Long-term Care Insurance: A portion of these premiums can be tax-deductible, depending on your age.
Situations where Medical Expenses are NOT deductible:
- When not itemizing deductions: If you opt for the standard deduction instead of itemizing, then you cannot deduct Medicare premiums.
- Medicare Late enrollment Penalties: These are financial penalties for not signing up for Part A, B, or D on time.
- Vitamins and Supplements: Usually not tax-deductible unless a doctor prescribes them for a medical issue.
- Cosmetic Surgery: Unless needed to address an injury or medical condition.
