It is the common goal of many travel adventurers to visit all 50 states in America. To boost this objective, each week, we shall explore one state. Beginning alphabetically, the first one to visit is none other than Sweet Home Alabama, whose abbreviation is AL.

Visit state #1 – Alabama!

State Motto Audemus jura nostra defendere
We dare defend our rights
State Flower Camellia “the rose of winter.”
State Bird Yellowhammer (The Northern Flicker)

State Capital Montgomery
Famous foods Boiled peanuts, pecan pie, fried green tomatoes, shrimp & grits, banana pudding & more.

Alabama is the first of the U.S. States alphabetically, though it is the 22nd state to be admitted to the union in 1819. The roughly rectangular-shaped state is bordered by Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, and Mississippi to the west. The Florida panhandle largely blocks state access to the Gulf of Mexico, except for in Alabama’s southwestern corner where Mobile Bay is located. The Tennessee River is in the northern part of the state, with the Appalachian Mountains ending in north-central Alabama. Fertile prairie lowlands, known as the Black Belt, stretch across the mid-section of the state and northeastern Mississippi.

Alabama is known for its arts & culture, Civil Rights legacy, science attractions, beaches, year-round golf, and more. Per, wonderful happenings await. For those seeking adventure in the great outdoors, visit the 22 state parks, which encompass 48,000 acres of land and water with endless opportunities to fish, camp, canoe, hike, and enjoy the great outdoors. For a memorable weekend getaway, there are tons of vacation options. Alabama is home to luxury beach resorts, boutique hotels dotted through quaint towns, and rustic mountain getaways. Whether you climb a mountain to observe the sunrise, sit in a rocker on the front porch of a Southern-style inn, or gaze out over the emerald ocean from your room overlooking the warm waters of the Gulf, Alabama offers a wide array of experiences for all.

Since there are so many areas to explore, from beaches to cities to mountains, Alabama is a place you’ll want to revisit time and time. Perhaps begin with a beach trip where you can dig your heels in the white sand beaches or sunbathe and swim. Take a leisurely stroll or hike or bike through Gulf Shores and along Orange Beach’s scenic parks and trails. Many claim that Alabama is just as divine in the winter season as in the summertime. Though somewhat chillier, it is less crowded and is more conducive to unobstructed views, photography, and observing wildlife. Or, if you’re more of a mountain lover, rent a secluded cabin in Perry County with immediate access to the outdoors. Enjoy recreational activities such as hiking at Perry Lakes Park, surrounded by natural beauty. To gain a widespread appreciation of this state’s splendor, also visit DeSoto Falls and State Park, as well as Little River Canyon National Preserve.
