This legislation, the Catch Up Our Kids Act, will address student learning loss due to school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overwhelming studies and analyses have shown a significant amount of learning loss and Senator Cruz’s goal of this legislation is to put the power back into the hands of parents, so that they can get their children back on track.

The Honorable Ted Cruz
Senator from Texas
United States Senate
127A Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Ted Cruz,
On behalf of the over 2.3 million members of AMAC – Association of Mature American Citizens, including over 198,000 members in Texas, I offer our support for the “Catch Up Our Kids Act.”
We agree with the findings laid out in your proposed legislation and share in your dismay and sadness that our children’s educations have suffered at the hands of the rampant mismanagement of the federal response to the Covid-19 pandemic, especially as it applies to education. It is critical to the future of our nation, and critical to our national security, that our children receive an education that is competitive at a global level.
Your bill, when it becomes law, will stand as a strong mitigation to the deleterious effects of the suboptimal education our students suffered during the COVID-19 school closures. This bill also takes advantage of funding already allocated to our schools such that the net increase in spending to support this effort is minimized.
Thank you, Senator Cruz, for advancing a bill that recognizes the need to ensure a good education for the future citizens and leaders of our great country. Our office stands by to support your efforts.
Sincerely,
Bob Carlstrom President AMAC Action
Hindsight is what we learn from an unpleasant experience that is communicated however the speaker wants the audience to hear it. It’s laced with finger pointing. People screwed up. Poor decisions were made based on the data and information available. Most of what we thought was not entirely correct. But that doesn’t change that most teachers are adults. How do you keep schools open without teachers? How do you keep teachers from getting exposed when they are in close contact to hundreds of children daily? If I were a teacher, I would not be willing to enclose myself in a poorly ventilated classroom with 20+ students for hours at a time even if everyone wore a mask. And how do you handle this bussing thing? Kids ride the bus but an adult drives the bus. You can empower all the parents you want but. if I were a teacher, I’m the one who decides when and if I’m willing to go back into that classroom. Give the teachers safe rooms to zoom into the classroom on big screens to teach. While the parents rotate to maintain a learning environment in the classroom full of their children being taught. Let the parents take the risk and take the responsibility for their children’s education. Let the teachers teach.
