These two bills will encroach on our Second Amendment basic right and effectively create a backdoor federal gun and gun owner registration.

Dear Leader McCarthy and Whip Scalise:
On behalf of over 2.3 million members of the Association of Mature American Citizens (AMAC), I am writing to express our strong opposition to H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, and H.R. 1446, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2021. Both of these bills will be voted on this week by the House of Representatives and we ask you to urge members of the Republican conference to vote against these bills.
Both pieces of legislation hinder the rights of Americans wishing to legally own guns and will do little to stop criminals from obtaining illegal firearms. The intent of the Bipartisan Background Checks Act is to criminalize currently legal behavior, the private transfer of firearms. There is no evidence that expanding the use of background checks to private transfers would stop criminals or would-be criminals from obtaining access to firearms while making common private transfers an illegal activity.
The second bill being voted on this week, the Enhanced Background Checks Act, will inevitably eliminate the rights of some Americans to purchase firearms. Under proposed legislation inaction by the government would create indefinite delays that could prevent someone from being able to purchase a firearm. Current law ensures that individuals will be able to access purchased firearms after a three-day waiting period under the federal background check system. The new 10-day waiting period could be indefinitely extended by government agents not finalizing a cleared background check of lawful Americans.
These bills are an attack on Americans’ right to gun ownership and should be opposed by all Republicans.
Sincerely,
Bob Carlstrom
President, AMAC Action
