Tricks to Keep off Holiday Weight

The holidays are full of joy and good cheer. But they are also jam-packed with high calorie foods and beverages. Here are a few good habits to develop to avoid gaining those unwanted pounds!

Never Arrive Hungry

Try to have a nutritious snack before you had out. It is not recommended to go to a party starving. If you wait until you get to the party before eating, you will eat an excessive amount, in addition to all of the appetizers. This will add up over the course of the day and will not be beneficial for you.

Drink Water

Sometimes, the hunger pains you feel are actually a signal that your body needs to be hydrated. Instead of reaching for a snack, grab your water bottle instead. Even though you don’t feel thirsty, you may become dehydrated as your blood vessels try to preserve heat by limiting blood flow to certain parts of your body. It’s also a good idea to eat foods rich in water, such as fruits and vegetables.

Stay Active

Make sure to walk 10,000 steps a day. Unless you plan on attending a formally scheduled exercise, such as a 10 am aerobics class, try to exercise first thing in the morning so you don’t put it off. No matter what you do, walking, running, biking, or swimming, it is so important to set aside that “you” time. Not only will you feel and look better, but you will be able to tackle the stress and chaos that comes with the season.


Games are a great way to bring the family together and take your mind off eating. It is also a great way to start a tradition. Nowadays there are many games you can play to get the whole family involved. Some examples of games for the whole family to enjoy are trivia, charades, heads up, card games like UNO, and my personal favorite LCR (Left Center Right).

Limit drinking, smoking & other bad habits

The Holiday Season is a great time to stop those bad habits. If you smoke, visit your doctor and ask about different options to help you quit. Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in your lungs making it hard to exercise. Drinking packs the calories and also may cause you to lose the ability to make good decisions about healthy eating.

The Most Important Meal of the Day

Make sure you eat a nice protein-filled breakfast. A study in 2008 showed that eating eggs for breakfast can help you lose 65% more weight than if you ate a bagel. Make things easier by boiling eggs over the weekend so you have a good supply of hard boiled eggs on hand.If you are allergic to eggs, eat some fruit or make yourself a delicious smoothie.

Bring Your Own Food

If you plan on attending a holiday party, the menu may be stuffed with calories. Bring your own delicious but healthier option. This way, if you end up eating some deserts, you won’t feel as guilty.

Make your goal to be a healthier you in 2016. Maintaining a healthy weight, developing good habits, and quitting the bad ones are a few gifts you can give yourself this holiday season!

Here’s a suggestion not mentioned: Try a little self control when it comes to eating during the holiday season. Works as well as anything else mentioned in the article. That was a bit of sarcasm folks. Seriously, the article lays out some reasonable steps one can take to keep the pounds off all year long. Not just during the holidays. Have a Merry Christmas everyone! Oops, that’s not a politically correct thing to say anymore, but then again I don’t care about political correctness. So once again, everyone have a very, very Merry Christmas this year!
