Crime in Portland, Oregon has been skyrocketing since city officials decided to defund the police and the county’s radical prosecutor, Mike Schmidt, began refusing to prosecute crimes and even major felonies beginning with last summer’s riots. Now, Schmidt and the other leftists running Portland have lost all control over the city, which has become a center of chaos and mayhem, and they are suddenly racing to reverse the policies and positions they have advanced for the past year.
In June of 2020, Portland officials voted to defund the Portland police budget by $16 million, which included the elimination of a gun-violence reduction unit. At the very time Portland was being overtaken by violent rioters and Antifa activists were laying siege to a federal courthouse, Schmidt sat down with an Antifa militant named AWKWORD — whom Schmidt called one of his “old buddies” — and accused federal law enforcement of “Gestapo like tactics.”
In August 2020, Schmidt refused to prosecute nearly 70% of criminal cases arising from the violent riots. He publicly asserted that the criminal justice system was built on a “white supremacist culture” and that he viewed his position as District Attorney as part of “the symbiotic relationship between people who are advocating for abolition [of prisons] and those of us working within the system.” Schmidt noted that: “[W]hen I ran, I talked about needing to shrink the criminal justice system[.]” He argued: “[W]e have defined what public safety means by what it means predominantly for the white culture. And we are hearing loud and clear from people that are not of that culture and that ethnicity, that they’re not into what we have defined public safety as[.]”
“I mean, if there’s a dystopia going on,” Schmidt said at one point, “that’s the dystopia that’s happening on our streets, it’s being caused by the Trump administration. We need to get them out of here.”
While the Trump administration has left, there is no doubt that Portland has turned into a dystopia of crime. Recent data from the National Fraternal Order of Police shows that Portland’s homicide rate has skyrocketed by an astounding 800% in the first five months of 2021 compared to the year before.
Now, Schmidt has endorsed refunding the police and is begging for the federal law enforcement officials to come to Portland’s aid – the very same people he previously demonized. The city is seeking help both from the FBI and the ATF due to the unprecedented increase in homicides. Schmidt recently noted that the Portland Police Bureau is “spread thin and being forced to triage the cases that they are working.”
In fact, Schmidt now says, “some cases…are just not being worked because the [Portland Police Bureau’s] resources are spread so thin.” As a result, he has turned to federal law enforcement agencies to fill the gap.
Portland Police Association Executive Director Daryl Turner recently told NBC Nightly News that “we’re dealing with rioting at a level and sustained violence that we’ve never seen before…gun violence like we’ve never seen before…at the most catastrophic staffing levels that we’ve ever seen before.”
The violence is unrelenting, and so are the costs, including overtime for the law enforcement officers who are being asked to take on extra hours to curb the brutal crime wave. Much of that cost, however, will be covered by the federal government. In Portland, Schmidt and Democrat city officials helped tear down the blue wall that protected the city, and now they are hoping that American taxpayers across the nation will bail them out for their failures.

I’m sure Biden will oblige them. If it weren’t for the citizens of Portland, I’d say “They made their bed, let them sleep in it.” I hope the people of Portland see their elected officials for what they are and vote them all out or, better yet, recall them.

While I do feel for those innocent souls in Portland who neither wanted nor advocated for the behaviors of their city leaders and the terrorists that are doing the harm, I do not think the city of Portland should receive any federal funding to correct the problems. You made your bed.
Possible this was their strategy all along; to federalize their police force. Where are the people of Portland? Would like to see a man on the streets viewpoint and dig into how those living in Portland are handling the rise in crime, the abuse of taxpayer dollars and getting rid of incompetent leadership.
What do you think the point was of defunding the police and releasing criminals from prisons! Bringing in the Federalis and the next step is taking away everyone’s guns. It’s all a well-devised plan, don’t be fooled.
Fools like Schmidt in Portlandia have orchestrated the partial destruction of their own cities. Always fun to read a fool deflecting the blame for his own actions. Woke is broke.
Why go to Portland? They will just blame everyone else for their troubles. In the end it will be Trumps fault that caused their crime rate to escalate. It’s every Republicans fault their homicide rate has jumped up. It’s always someone else’s fault, not the bankrupt Democratic state!
Schmidt should be made to resign not merely for his incompetence, that would be an understatement, but for being unfit for his office for blatantly disregarding and even attacking the rule of law, and those that risk their lives to enforce it. If left in power, the insanity will only continue once things are put to right. It must also be remembered that he is only part of the overall problem which must first be acknowledged, before any action of consequence can have the greatest lasting effect.
How many times did Trump offer Fed assistance. Another example of where Trump was right about things but all he ever recd from the radical left was criticism and threats to impeach him.
Tough, this is what you wanted and what your citizens voted for. Live with you choices for awhile, maybe you will make better choices in the future…….if you survive.
I must add that I am not advocating that nothing should be done…innocent lives are at stake which is more important than politics. Decisions must be made expeditiously, this includes Schmidt being replaced.
Only allow federal assistance if ALL OF THOSE WHO ARE IN OFFICE RESIGN AND ARE REMOVED
The people of Portland just re-elected Tom Wheeler last November by a wide margin. They had a real opportunity to change political leadership in the city at all levels of government, DA included, and instead voted straight line progressive Democrat.
So yes the murder rate is escalating in Portland, but the people made their choice very clear. They want socialism, but they don’t want all the bad things that socialism brings with it. Well you can’t have that, because by its very nature socialism promotes crime and violence as a means to control the population. Anyone with any brains should already have left Portland. Those that still remain have made their choice in the type of leadership they want and they are getting it in spades.
When you defund the police, tell them you will arrest and prosecute them for doing their job, kick those criminals and rioters arrested free within hours of their arrest, what do you honestly expect? The same thing is happening in a number of Democrat run states and cities across the country. It is by design to promote the idea of a federalizing the police force under control of the Democrats.

Portland is getting what they deserve after letting criminals go and refusing to prosecute and defunding the police. What they need now is to replace the Attorney General and then bring in the Feds to clean up the mess.

The perpetrator was treated like a heroine; and interviewed! America has swallowed this line of brainwashing; ‘hook, line, & sinker’!

I think what is happening in Portland is quit funny. To be perfectly logical, what would any educated person think would happen if you took away the means of promoting and protecting law and order in a civilized society?
Perhaps if they let Portland go on as it is, the progressive Hollywood elites could make a prime time show where Portland and Chicago could compete against each other to see who can out do the other. I live in Oregon, but down South where we are more Conservative. We are no longer under management by a Democrat governing body. It is the new CCP-SMP Party who are filled with empty headed imbiciles, Wheeler, and that radical prosecutor mentioned for example. I’m not all that bright, or educated for that matter, but I have never witnessed such ignorance and plain stupidity in all my life….from people who are supposed to be elected to their positions. These people are ‘Demon Spawn’ and have no sense of moral responsibility or common decency whatsoever! The Bible speaks of them quite well as ‘Seducers waxing worse and worse’, is one….’past feeling, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons’, is another.
We have had mail-in voting for quite a few years now…and now I know why. It’s easier to cheat in elections. Since these imbiciles have no moral conscience, I firmly believe they’ve been cheating us all along to stay in power. My husband and I are looking to leave Oregon when we can fix our home up to sell. God answers prayer, of that I am sure, and He will deal with these demon scum in due time. If the law-abiding citizens, businesses, and police could just move out and let the rioters and stupid politicians have the city, the problem would take care of itself. With no protection from each other, no stores, no food, no gas stations, no transportation, no utilities, and nothing to loot, the rioters, criminals, and politicians would soon starve, disband, or wipe each other out in no time. It’s worth taking 5 minutes to research who helped finance Mike Schmidts campaign to get elected as DA, it includes the likes of George Soros, and John Legend, and of course anti police/justice PAC’s. Note his stance on things like a cash free bail system, and dismantling the criminal justice system it will help explain everything.. Its a warped philosophy that if you treat criminals like non- criminals every crime will go away, its naive at best..

The first thing the Police Chief should remove is any police provided security detail provided to city officials so that they can be redistributed to the streets. Make it a formal announcement to the press and then let the city officials decide if they want to justify to the public why they would countermand order. Protection for me but not for thee.
